Canucks won't exercise team option on Tocchet, offer him contract extension

How did Tocchet become such an in demand coach? His track record isn't that good.
He was given the reins of an absolute wagon last season and it made him look a lot better than he is.

He's improved Tyler Myers, and Quinn Hughes morphed into a top 5 player in the league while he's been coaching. How much is on him with Hughes I'm not sure.

Listening to JR today announce Van has an offer on the table that far exceeds any other coach Van has paid before and that Tocchet is going to decide whether to accept it or not tells me Tocchet is going elsewhere. Sounds like JR is laying the foundation for coming PR.
I mean JR tells the truth, for better or worse. I don't doubt its veracity, and I do think he's just putting his cards on the table. If Tocchet doesn't want to coach in Vancouver, or if ownership doesn't want to pay what Tocchet can get elsewhere, there's nothing more they can do. I really don't think JR is signalling anything, he's just being honest. The fact Tocchet hasn't extended yet is the real bad sign, shows he is open to other possibilities, and Philly is a great opportunity for him personally.

Now something to keep in mind is that his decision effects the lives of his whole staff. He's going to have to consult them and see what they want. Chances are it means breaking up his team to some degree, which may not be what they all want. From the coaching and hockey ops perspective, there is a really good pipeline in Vancouver with the farm in Abbotsford, the Sedins, Malhotra, Ryan Johnson, and a long history with Rutherford and Allvin. It's well known that Tocchet has a lot of influence on player personnel and systems down on the farm. Changing all that up could be choosing a whole lot of uncertainty, all because of one comically bad season in Vancouver. If Tocchet goes to Philly, there's no guarantee things will work out there, and if he fails there while Vancouver bounces back (as they are expected to) he's going to look pretty bad.

"Canucks won't exercise team option on Tocchet" makes sense.
"They want to offer him the largest contract they've ever given a coach" wait what.
