Canucks won't exercise team option on Tocchet, offer him contract extension

I keep hearing from Friedman on his podcast and various NHL Network Radio shows say that the Canucks are prepared to offer Tocchet the largest coaching contract... in TEAM history. This all seems like lip service to tell the fans "hey, we tried" when he inevitably goes to Philly.

If I were him I'd have no interest in staying. I'm not sure what's in the water in the pacific northwest, but running NHL teams sure ain't their specialty

Rick Tocchet sucks as a coach and Flyers fans will be longing for Tortorella and AV real quick after seeing his offensive zone dump and no chase, 3 shots a period system. He'll turn Michkov into a 3rd liner in no time.

It's almost as if trading your best forward for magic beans is a great way to tank your offence. Who would've guessed

I think he'd choose the Rangers over the Flyers if both offered him the same money and term but given Philly's hard on for former players, I'd guess they're the favorite.

Listening to JR today announce Van has an offer on the table that far exceeds any other coach Van has paid before and that Tocchet is going to decide whether to accept it or not tells me Tocchet is going elsewhere. Sounds like JR is laying the foundation for coming PR.

How did Tocchet become such an in demand coach? His track record isn't that good.
Last year the canucks had quite a stacked team with multiple players having career years and also injury free untill march. It all went perfectly for us untill the 2024 ASG. That's why Rick is in such demand.

If they want Tocchet around so badly just exercise the option and figure it out later. Why is Vancouver trying to trigger their own coach search here?

Yeah, I get that they probably want more years out of him, but it's just business like asking a player to sign a bridge deal, or waiving an NTC. I don't think Tocchet is that good of a coach but this is weird.

Seems odd for an average to slightly above average coach. "we want to keep you, but please. Go look at your other options".

Tocchet did well last year but had a perfect storm of almost no injuries. This season has shown his inability to adjust or change his coaching style when things go sideways.

Nah all you need is 2 bidders to have demand. Philly created this market. And Tochet will use the opportunity to soak whoever hires him.

He really handled the media good last year but it all went downhill this year. Im sure hed prefer the yahoo fans over in Philly as opposed to Canadian fans who can pick a coach apart shift by shift

If my title was confusing, the Canucks had a team option on Tocchet for next year but won't hold him hostage, so they instead offered him an extension. I have a feeling this thread will end up with a title change of him becoming coach of the Rangers or Flyers.

I think you worded it as well as it can be worded.

What happened this year had very little to do with the management. The team lost their #1 goalie for 67 games, their top two dmen for a combined 35 games, their #1 centre had a horrible year due to injuries and being unable to train, their other #1 got cheated, played like shit, took a leave of absence then took it out on the #1 centre.

They then trade JT and turned that into a #3 Dman, a solid RHD and a solid 2-3 centre in Chytil.
Then to top it off, EP finally gets his game back with the team 1 point out of the playoffs and 12 games to go only to lose Chytil and EP for the season.

I mean Christ I get that it's fun to kick a rival when they are down but very few teams would be able to survive all of that.

Bottom line is the team has 25 million in cap, everyone's healthy, and lots of picks and prospects to add too the forward group to go with a very strong goalie tandem and one of the best Dcorps in the league. If Tochett wants to win he's got a much better chance than with NYR or Philly.

Also as a kings fan, I wouldn't throw stones when it comes to shitty management, considering all the shit trades, signings and drafting Blake has done.
Kings are a paper tiger who very well will be entering another rebuild shortly
