Confirmed with Link: Canucks Trade W Vasily Podkolzin to Oilers for 2025 4th (OTT)

Max Sasson is on pace for 26 points. Podkolzin is on pace for 31 points. At the margins, not a significant loss.

That said, I think they should have kept Podkolzin over Sprong given Tocchet's standard for defensive play.

I don't get the hate for Pods. His main problem is that he lacks finish. Otherwise he "plays the right way." Oilers' HC obviously likes him enough to play him up the lineup even though he hasn't been producing much. At $1M AAV, he's a cheap young player to have in the lineup.

What's Heinen on pace for? :sarcasm:

Watched him play and he is the best version of the Podz we saw here. Did a little digging and the under the hood metrics are spectacular. Listened to comments Draisaitl was making about loving to play with him and saw that the fan base there loves him and it all starts to add up.

He’s gonna be a versatile 45-55 point scorer for them with a physical edge. It’s common unfortunately for new management regimes to jettison middling players drafted by their predecessors.

And he declined the PEDs

He's basically pulling a 2020-22 Puljujarvi where a fringe former top prospect is being carried to 35-40 points (with great supporting metrics) by McDavid and Draisaitl.

Now, playing with super-elite players can sometimes permanently elevate a lesser player fortunate enough to get that opportunity (see Sedins and Burrows) but there was pretty much a 0% chance that was ever going to happen in middle-6 minutes here.

And per the bolded, it wasn't like the new regime watched Podkolzin for 20 games and then dumped him. They tried for basically the entire length of his ELC to find a way to get something out of him and it just didn't work. He was moved preemptively because he hit waiver eligibility and wasn't in the top 12-13 guys on the depth chart.

Tiger Williams got 35 goals playing with Gradin.
Actually, Tiger mostly played with Bobby Schmautz and Per-Olov Brasar that season. Then at the All Star game, he lined up with Gretzky and Mike Bossy.

Gradin was between Smyl and Fraser, and Ivan Boldirev centered Darcy Rota and a young Brent Ashton.

That was a gutsy team in an impossible division, I remember it well.

Which is exactly why i hated the move in principle. However low the odds and how badly he had struggled. He also a serious head injury a kid a marriage his country was in turmoil and had completely lost his confidence.

And the timing was atrocious. Im sure they looked at it like sure we'll take the best offer but i dont see a 4th rounder as a significant reason to throw a team that just lost 5 players in their younger prime aged years a life line as they get geriatric.

And this is a hard heavy player. Even on a 4th line not scoring a single point he could be a physical force used against us. Probably as or more effective than PDG Sasson Amen Raty Bains Karlsson and maybe even Hoglander Heinen. Dumb trade

Not to put Podz down but he's scoring at a 30 points pace playing with Draisaitl 2/3 of his shifts. Blueger and Suter are outscoring him while being way better rounded players, playing tougher minutes and not riding shotgun with someone scoring above PPG at even strength.

It's good that he stuck to the NHL but he's a farcry from being above replacement level yet.

IIRC, he has one (1) point without either McDavid or Draisaitl on the ice.

But should he have been one of the top 13 guys on the depth chart? Aman, Raty, Sprong made the opening roster. Raty was waiver exempt (and he likely wasn't expected to make the team). Karlsson and Bains were also exempt. Aman was waived anyways. Sprong was a poor fit from the get go. PDG didn't make the team. There was clearly room for Pods if they wanted to make room for him. Remember that Tocchet seems to love Podkolzin's work ethic. He sounded like a good fit under Tocchet until he was traded.
