Confirmed with Link: Canucks Sign Tom Willander to ELC

All I have to say is thank god.

Keeping Hughes is no certainty, and I'm in the camp that believe Willander has top pairing potential (He plays so much like Slavin).

If we believe the 200k gap that Dali reported, the 17k increase from the Canucks looks like a face saving measure for the agent who dropped the ask down by 183k

Do we have any report that suggests that the Willander camp dropped their ask by a significant amount?

We have a report of the Canucks increasing their offer before they arrived at being $200k apart.

now that he is signed it seems they did want him signed but were either willing to or wanted to delay it.

by delaying it they missed the chance to get development and assessment time with him in abby this year and maybe getting to see him play and then give him stuff to work on this summer. that's potentially really significant because his over the summer development is critical at his age. an assessment now would allow them to know better where he was likely to be next season to help with roster planning.

so the question is why would they be willing to forego these advantages for what seems like a fairly small amount of dough? a few theories.

-possibility one is they think they reliably know what they have already and are not that concerned about assessing him in person or about his summer development because he is so awesome.
-possibility two is they are stubborn dumbasses
-possibility three is that either the money or keeping him away from the abby playoff run was somehow really important in a way we mortals cannot comprehend..
-possibility four is that for solid business reasons outweighing optimizing the development of this player they needed to make a f*** you point to an agent "pour encourger les autres"
-possibility five is the flip side of one. they think he sucks and is far from the nhl, and they intend to trade him this summer and did not want him to come to abby to help him with all that because that would demonstrate that he sucks in a pro environment where he could be scouted.

i am going to be optimistic and go with possibility one, but possibility five is second. they either expect him to make the team easily or to miss handily. i think most likely they think he will make the team easily since they'd be all over his summer workout otherwise.

Now let's hope that the canucks don't do something foolish like trade this guy before we can see what he can do. Right handed and protected to be a top 4 D-man.... We've been looking for this for years! He needs to be developed properly and not traded at this point in his career.

If they keep him, there's a decent chance he steps into the top 4 in the pre-season and never leaves.

It would be absolutely moronic to trade him right now. So I'm expecting them to do that.

Willander and a 1st for Marco Rossi. I hope they prove me wrong.

Now that he's signed I'd be surprised if they trade him before getting a look at him in the NHL. Think it may be more likely they trade D-Petey. Nobody can resist a sexy mystery box. Also, what do you say if you trade him and he breaks out NHL year one.

I was never worried this wasn't going to happen ... it's just a shame it got delayed and wasted a stretch where he could have been playing in the AHL.

I'm assuming he's signing an ATO and is directly into the Abbotsford roster given that they're currently playing Joe Arntsen in playoff games.
Lets hope so! I'd love to see how he looks at the AHL level.

I'm probably wrong, but for my own peace of mind I'm chalking up the delay to the player wanting to try out for the men's national team since it is hosted in his hometown this year.

If they trade Willander and the first for Rossi then they will regret it, keep him sign some FA center and other FA guys who might be if interest at the deadline for playoffs teams and build a team both Willander and DPetey show progress consider packaging up Hronek for a long term.m solution at 2C.

Keep developing KK as a n inhouse bottom pairing guy with #3 or #4 Potential draft at Center at 15 or move up to get Brady Martin.

We're never going to know the full story. My assertion is based upon the following timeline:

- Willander's season at BU ends April 12.
- Most high level prospects get signed within 1-3 days.
- Management and Willander were locked in a stalemate for a month.
- May 9, Dhaliwal says management increased their offer, are now $200k apart.
- Both sides work in earnest to close a $17k gap. (Shah)
- Willander signs on May 14 to a deal that is only $100k apart from Geekie in total Schedule A bonuses.

If we accept that management increased their offer to get to within $200k, near the May 9 disclosure, and we now see Willander signed to a reasonable deal, then it was management that remained more than $200k apart until early May.

The timing of Abby's playoff round makes it feel like there was finally a pressure point to get it done.

Big for both sides that Willander gets a stretch of games and the team boosts their odds now that they're in for a tough opponent and full series.

For anyone interested here is what Rutherford’s said regarding Willander (Shannon podcast May 2nd):

JR: “I probably shouldn’t say this bc I don’t like negotiating publicly but the fact of the matter is he’s been offered the same as what the 11th overall got last year…”
“…so it’s not like we are being too hard on him but he has the right to make his own decisions.”

JS: What type of player is he?

JR: “Oooooh…he’s a very good player. A very good two way solid defenseman that can skate, move the puck. He’s got really good character.”
“He’s going to have a good long (as long as he’s injury free) NHL career.”
“I believe he can step in and play this year.”

why not just sign Rossi to a 1st and 3rd offer sheet that Minny doesn't want to match.

The only offer sheet candidate Canucks should attempt to sign is McLeod.

Give him a 7 million dollar contract that only costs a 1st and 3rd.

they might match it?
they're trying to trade him, because they don't want him. So they're going to match an offer sheet to keep him? do it the same way Carolina did with Kotkaniemi....a 1 year deal, so they can't even trade him before having to negotiate his next deal.

Oh I missed the reports of them trying to trade him
