Confirmed with Link: Canucks Sign FWD Anri Ravinskis to 2-Year ELC

From the look of those clips--he looks like a guy who might even thrive more on the smaller NA ice.

Size, physicality and first-step explosiveness, are the keys to generating offense in NA. He'll obviously start the year in Abby, but you have to defer to the Canucks pro scouts--who haven't been wrong too often.

He's basically a 'free prospect', who could be a late-bloomer.

On EliteProspects, it looked like he was under contract to play in the Liiga again next season. Does this override that?

Would definitely be curious to see how he fares in Abbotsford.
Out clause is pretty much a given when signing Liiga deals.

Also... I think this contracts makes that 2nd tier team Ketterä some serious money, relatively speaking.

Seems like a decent bet. His skating and size combination stands out in those clips and his production in Liiga was good this year. Worst case he’ll help Abby.

Do you think that there is any chance he would be still play with us (HPK) on loan next season ? I guess probably not because it's a 2 year contract.

This thread is funny because 6'2" and 201 lbs is the average height and weight of an NHL player this last season (according to the Athletic).

For the Canucks, the average height is 6'2" and weight is 197 lbs.

That's driven up by goalies and D, though.

The average size of an NHL forward is about 6'1 195 so a guy who will fill out to 6'3 210 is legitimately big still.

What might have attracted the Canucks is that this guy really plays a 'heavy game' for a player who's spent his entire career playing in Finland.

He finishes his checks with a gusto, particularly along the back wall on the forecheck. If he keeps it up, he's going to make his coaches in Abbotsford very happy.

Not sure what you mean by this. The Liiga has the reputation of being a more physical league compared to other European leagues.

That could be.....but it's a lot harder to play a physical brand of hockey on the bigger ice sheet. Players have a lot more time and space to move the puck, and forecheckers have trouble just getting there to finish their checks.

So it looks to me from the highlights, that Ravinskis takes hit hits where he can. But on the smaller ice he could much more of a force along the walls.

Finland plays on its own sized ice which is smaller than the IIHF size used in other countries

Answer is even bizarre than that. (At least to me)

There is large disparity between rink sizes in the Liiga.

HIFK, Helsingin jäähalli: 28 x 60
HPK, Ritari-areena: 30 x 58
Ilves & Tappara, Hakametsän jäähalli: 28 x 60 (old rink)
Jukurit, Ikioma Areena: 29 x 59
JYP, Synergia-areena: 28 x 60
Porin jäähalli: 28 x 58
Oulun Raksilan jäähalli: 29 x 60

(Meters)

Do we still have Latvian posters around here?
I might need to come here more often. I'm a Ducks fan tho

Going back to Wolrd Juniors, Ravinskis has always been a good forechecker and able to do the dirty work for his linemates IMO.
I'm glad he got a chance and with the Canucks org. Will see how his year in the AHL goes, I'd like to think he can carve out a complimentary middle-6 role
