You must be very unfamiliar with Japanese names. Paul Kariya would be the most famous hockey player of Japanese descent. There have been a few including Akito’s brother Taro who played some NHL games for Detroit.A Japanese hockey player? First time I've seen that. Nice.

Abbotsford Canucks had Yushiroh Hirano a few years back. He was born in Japan. Yutaka Fukufuji would be the first Japanese player to play an NHL game.

What made you think he meant first names? But ya most of the NHL-related players we know that have Japanese names have Japanese last names rather than first names if they were of Japanese descent. Suzuki is a 5th generation Japanese Canadian and distantly related to David Suzuki.I think he meant first names. I thought Kailor Yamamoto and Nick Suzuki but their first names not Japanese.
