Speculation: Canucks Off-Season is going to be Fun

JT Miller was the driver on that team. Dude was an ultra competitor who expected a lot out of his teammates. Dealing him signaled the start of a retool/rebuild in my eyes.
Sure, but it's not like he is lighting the world on fire on the rangers.

Update: Actually, he has bounced back recently, back being over PPG.
I thought he cooled off

JT Miller is driving the Rangers to finish 9-10 in the east aka the worst positon to be in.

JT Miller was definitely the offensive cog and what made the Canucks click. Too bad about what happened and we have to move on now. The 2 players I would target in the off season would be Alex Tuch to replace a bit of what Miller brought to the team and Marner, a super skilled winger that maybe soft but has skills to score and maybe develop chemistry with Petersson.

Debrusk-Pettersson-Marner
Chytil-Tuch-Lekkermaki
Joshua-Raty-Garland
Connor-Blueger-Sherwood

Not sign Boeser, Suter and trade Hoglander in Tuch deal along with picks. This will open up additional 13 million dollar in cap space to sign Marner.

Defense
Hughes-Hronek
Pettersson-Myers
E.Pettersson-Forbort/Mancini

Goalie
Demko
Lankinen

Canucks and Rangers each have an 11+ million dollar problem driving them into the worst position to be in.
Rangers 11 million dollar problem is worst than Canucks 11 million dollar problem since Pettersson can still improve and he is young enough to bounce back after Miller departure. Zibanejad is just a headcase that might have the same problem that affected Luis Eriksson.

He drove Horvat off the team and was in the process of driving off EP40

Hoe do you plan on getting Tuch since he is not a UFA?

Hoglander does not move the needle in acquire tuch.Tuch is a RW not a C

Buffalo is not interested in picks.

That defense is bad?

Quinn hughes = Top 2 Dman in the world
Hronek = 1b 2a Defender
m.petey = #3/4 Shutdown defender
Myers = #4/5 Defender
DPETEY = has arguably been our best defender behind Hronek since getting the call up and is what like 20 years old?
Atm #5/6
Mancini = Has looked great again, #5/6
Willander = Top Defender prospect with size and skating

If you think that’s bad, give your head a shake.

We were running brannstrom ( who was okay) Juulson and soucy for half the year man.
Hughes is clearly a phenom. But who else from that group would be considered an elite core player? IMO none.
Considering the club only has Hughes as an elite core guy, they should rebuild. That means trade Hughes and deep dive into the draft for 5-7 years and build a new core. Obviously they won’t find another Hughes’ level D man. But they will certainly build out a new young core that is collectively a lot better than they have now.

Maybe the retool around Hughes is the plan? I just don’t see that working though. Hughes, imo, is too good to have the club draft where needed to collect elite guys through the draft.

With the loss tonight, the Canucks are basically out of the playoffs for this season. It's been a pretty drama-filled year, alongside significant injuries across their lineup.

But most importantly, the Canucks have two years to convince Quinn Hughes to stay past the 2027 season.

This is going to be a monumental task, especially after what transpired this season, but as you know, things can change fast.

One thing we know for sure is that Rutherford is not shy to wheel and deal and make significant trades. I feel like there's going to be even more pressure on Jim and Allvin to make significant moves to improve the team with the two-year Quinn window.

Luckily for Vancouver, they have a ton of pieces, and most importantly, the defense is pretty much set, with a nice mix of youth and experience:
  • Hughes - Hronek
  • M. Petey - Myers
  • D. Petey - Mancini / Willander
This is very strong, but I wouldn’t get too attached to Willander, because this brings me to the next issue.

The center position.
Currently, it's Pettersson, Blueger, Chytil, Raty, and Aman.

Suter is a UFA, and he's been great for us all season, but in my opinion, he's more of a winger.

Chytil's injury concerns are significant. We hope he gets better, but he can’t be relied on, and if he comes back, many people have him moving to the wing, because of the next issue.
But first, the Canucks' #1 priority this offseason is to find a young-ish center.
This is an incredibly hard task, but luckily, as I wrote above, they do have pieces.
For example, would a 1st round pick (12-15) + Willander / Lekkerimäki be enough to get that center? I feel there’s a shot.

Whether they want to do it is another issue altogether, because trading a guy like Willander would be a huge blow if the player they trade him for doesn’t pan out.

Also, which teams are going to trade a young center? It's a huge problem.

You can always look at the UFA market, but it's basically just Sam Bennett, who will cost a fortune. He’s not coming here, in my opinion.

The next issue is wingers. The Canucks will most likely let Boeser walk, which will free up a significant amount of cap space. The problem is that most teams in the league will also have a ton of cap space. Will the Canucks go for an impact player like Marner or Ehlers, or will they go for a mid-tier option?

Again, you need to sell Quinn Hughes on staying, so will the mid-tier option be enough?

The goalie situation will be fine with Demko and Lankinen.

And that’s where Vancouver is at. It’s going to be a pretty fascinating offseason.
What do you think they should do?

here is the cap Situation for Vanouver.

Needs - Top 6 Center, 3rd Line Center (If Chytil moves to Wing) Top 6 Winger.
Assets - 1st + 2nd + 3rd Round Draft Picks. Lekkerimaki + Willander for significant trade pieces.

I think you’ll find that center extremely hard to find especially if you’re looking youngish. A pile of teams are in that market and, imo, have more to wheel and deal with. Think Montreal, Detroit, Philly, SJ, etc.

If the Canucks want to contend the next two years they’re probably better off getting someone older like brock Nelson.

Haven't read the whole thread but.the Canucks are going to.be desperate for scoring next season. This year they currently ranked 22nd in the league with 216 goals. The only playoff team with less is Minnesota and they are clearly headed.in a downward spiral without most of their top guys.

Now factor in the 47 goals that Vancouver is going to lose from Boeser and Suter walking. Those goals won't be easy to replace. It's.going to cost them to replace these guys and that's just to get back to 22nd in scoring. I could easily see teams offering Boeser 7.5M and Suter 4M. If Vancouver were to match those numbers that would eat up most of their 14M.

Also 14M sounds like a lot of money to bring in replacement players but it's really not what it used to be. Vancouver actually has the 11th LOwEST amount to spend. That means 21 other teams have more cap space to spend. It's possible that teams spend even more where Boeser is an 8M+ and Suter gets 5M.

Miller hasn't done anything either.
Except to finally wear out his welcome
It was heartwarming to see him interact with his old team. Don't you think?
At least he's ppg on his new team, more than you can say about Horvat/Petterson. Because they're more of a problem than Miller.

Wow! It's looking more and more that all these teams season will be ending at the same time.
Miller is a caustic presence in the locker room
