They need to be able to do it strategically, but it is honestly dumb to (for example) spend 5 million bucks to get a third rounder back. Sorry, that's just insane. There are deal structures it makes sense, where it is more cap than cash, closer to the deadline etc. There is not need to take on a toxic multi year burn unless you are also moving cash out.

Build the practice rink by spending 10M under the cap for the next three seasons. Seems like an idea to me.

Yeah I'm totally for sensible spending, and we most certainly do not need anything near the cap. But if this means a blanket statement that shoots down ALL possibility of the team acquiring assets by taking on bad contracts from other teams, yeah I'm not on board with that.

Dylan Larkin
  • Everyone involved is still working away at it
  • Teams that most want him have the least to offer; if it gets done, may have to involve a third team
Elias Pettersson
  • Elias Pettersson, Boeser, and obviously DeBrusk, are definitely available
  • Canucks want to tear it all down
  • Thinks they would be willing to retain on Pettersson’s contract
  • Some teams doubt they can revitalize him
  • Canucks have talked to teams and are willing to move him but isn’t sure if they can
Brendan Gallagher
  • Canucks and Canadiens have talked about him
  • Mentions how we don’t know what kind of asset the Canucks are asking to acquire in order to take him on

Seems likely that Pete will remain with us to start the next season.

We already have a retention slot for the coming season tied up in Myers. I think it would be premature to commit to another one right now, especially such a long term ne.

Hoping we can work something out for Gallagher. Especially if we're shipping out pretty much every veteran forward, having one or two character guys around becomes more important.

Agree, you can get more out of retention slots by using them on shorter term deals. While rebuilding, take on decent veterans on bad contracts in the summer and ship them out at the deadline with retention when they have one or two years left. Over a 4 year period that can be up to 8 separate deals to capitalize on the two retention slots. You retain on a deal with 7 years left, you had better be getting some serious value back to make up for the lost opportunity.

I agree with the idea but most selling teams may end up selling one player with retention at most, it's rare to see a team sell two players with retention in a single year. Also with the cap currently exploding, there are a lot of teams that will end up with a decent chunk of cap space at the deadline diminishing the need for retention on guys making like ~2m-3m. It's still better to have the slot than not have the slot but I don't see it as being that big of a deal in most cases.
