Luke Hughes would be another crazy offer sheet. They’ll probably move Hamilton and match it but if you offer sheet him $11.5M or something that could make things dicey for them. At the very least, it probably becomes harder to sign Quinn Hughes at like $14-15M if they do decide to match.

I think Jamie Benn is a realistic target this offseason. The Stars probably don’t have the money to resign and I would not be surprised if at the end of his career he wants to come home. At around 2-3 years @ $5-6 million I would do it. Great even strength production actually one of the leaders in 5 on 5 Pts/60. Would add some physicality to the top six, can step in take a face-off, and can still skate fairly well. I think Johnston and Stankoven development really benefited from playing with Benn last year.

i haven't updated for a few signings since but at the deadline there was 446m in expiring salaries (ufas + rfas) and 744m in cap space this summer. there aren't gonna be enough players to go around

yea, i think the rfa offersheet thing won't work with nearly the same effect as last season

have thought since the cap announcement that the best play might be to go for older guys on current negative value contracts that probably won't be as negative for too much longer and will have less term than ufa's that sign for 7 years this summer - throwing these out as names moreso than specific targets, but brendan gallagher, josh anderson, timo meier, logan couture, sean courturier, kevin hayes, chris kreider, etc.

if we can get paid or pay very little to absorb these guys for the cap space, it's probably a less risky bet than blowing a load in free agency chasing a guy like brock nelson (that probably won't even think about coming here anyways). as of right now, think i'd rather take kreider for two years over boeser for eight.

it's a different era from 2016 when guys like lucic and ladd were cashing in big contracts and breakout u25 stars were getting bridged. there's no chance we can land cuylle or cooley through an offersheet imo

Think both are probably true. Expect that teams who will have way too much money to spend will make high dollar offer sheets and jack up RFA prices, but also that there won’t be much movement because it will be easy for teams to move money to keep their key young players.

Samoskevich is another. Tsyplakov, Holmstrom, Elmer Soderblom, Foerster, Evangelista (although I’ve thought about maybe a Hoglander for Evangelista trade sort of thing).

Samoskevich is someone I really like. He reminds me of a young TJ Oshie.

He's been a full time NHLer this season, I was thinking lower profile. Someone like Rory Kerins, a Flames prospect who is 22 and scored at .5 goals per game in the AHL this season but only played 5 NHL games (and put up 4 assists). He was a 7th round pick and is on nobody's radar.

To be clear, I don't know anything about this player (Flames Nation suggests he has some footspeed issues) but that is the statistical profile I'm talking about. It's hard to acquire players of this age group so offer sheets (or even the threat of one) could be a way of knocking them loose.

I think it'll increase salaries for RFA's, but also cause these players to be moved around a lot more as teams assess whether they have room for them.

So today im going to move on to showing you all just how screwed we are in assets now too compared to our peers.

Todays team. Utah. 22m in capspace with Nick Bjugstad to sign. An actual destination team. Not a sniff of scandal or gongshow. Literally just made splash #1 in season #1 with Sergachev and Marino.

Then drafted twice in the first round last year. And in 2023. And in 2022. (Since traded one of em)

Oh but we will be the ones to snag Ehlers or Bennett.

Wake up people. Utah has 5 times the assets we have and is only trending up while we are a disgrace.

We aint signing no premium UFAs. We aint trading into no top 10. We are going to rebuild be default, likely starting season one of the Marcus Pettersson contract.

Tomorrow's team, Seattle Kraken. Quick teaser, 20+ million capspace, only Kakko to sign, and fully capable of giving 30 year old UFAs 7 year deals. (See stephenson, chandler)

But idk, I’d need to see a more thorough analysis before I doom & gloom about FA. These guys bat well in FA relative to the rest of the league. And yeah, total $ available to spend is worrying. But how many of those teams will spend all of it? How many of those teams have significant RFAs and don’t really have the space to make a big add? How many have places available on their first line and are begging for difference makers?

It’s very likely we are sitting here in the second week of July trying to justify Roslovic & Boeser but I don’t know.

I think things are going to get weird this summer. I think we’ll see more surprises than people expect. The group of Demko, Myers, Garland, DeBrusk, Hoglander, Chytil, Blueger. I really question how many of those guys return.

Ya I dunno its real easy and takes two seconds for me to compare. NYI is the only team that actually has a bunch of guys needing to sign but they spent 90m this year so I know theyre not afraid to spend to the cap.

They have 28,000,000 available next year.

Dobson gets 8. Hasnt even earned it but cant give him 10+ yet and he just took 4 so 8 seems fair.

Palmieri, even if a bad idea, gets 5 again.

Romanov also gets 5 and thats doing him a favor longterm as a good soldier.

Tsyplakov gets 2-3.

Holmstrom gets the Hoglander, 3.

So theyre the one team that will actually need to uee their capspace to retain their own. Maybe they end with 3-5m to spend in UFA to grab another Duclair haha.

But then sooooo many teams are just licking their lips. We've known this cap bump is coming for a couple years now and some teams have positioned themselves well to capitalize.

Hell Utah just dumped Weber's corpse to ensure they have that 7m.

Anaheim just did the weird Vatrano thing. Only reason you do that is if you plan on needing that caproom soon so you can bet the Ducks will be players soon.

Seattle has to sign Kappo Kakko and Ryker Evans. They have 21,000,000 to do so. I can only expect they will try to be UFA or RFA offsheet players.

Its like 3 clicks on puckpedia to see Philly has 27 million dollars in capspace and only Cates, Foerster and York to sign. I can tell you how far behind we are in 30 seconds.

Bennett would be a god in Philly. There's no chance we outbid them, or out court them, as one example.

i did an analysis that was lost to the board wipe but the tl;dr was only really dallas are under any cap pressure this summer. they're going to lose granlund, dadonov and probably ceci. there's a chance they'll lose duchene or benn depending on whether seguin is healthy. if bourque isn't signed early then there's a chance he could be lost to an offer sheet

the rangers could be in trouble if they mismanage things but they have a little over 10m to get k'andre, cuylle, rempe and kaliyev signed. worst case they probably just exile kreider or zibenjad out west somewhere. there's a bunch of teams that will need to do something just to reach the cap floor so they shouldn't have much of an issue finding a taker

the lightning, knights, blues, avs and canadiens are all comparatively light on cap space but also have virtually no significant free agents. the lightning have gourde and perbix as ufas, the knights have reilly smith and olofsson as ufas and nic hague as an rfa, the blues have literally no one of consequence, the avs will probably lose brock nelson but get landeskog back and only really need to sign drouin if they want and the canadiens have dvorak, armia and savard as ufas and struble as an rfa

basically every other team can offer marner 15m per and still reup all their significant free agents

Quinn Hughes. Playing with Hughes will inevitably see a boost in a players stats. He's a special player it'll rub off on you.

We are literally like bottom 10 in capspace available next season and thats without Boeser, Suter, Forbort or replacements!
