Having cap space going into the season is super valueable because it allows you to accrue capspace and make a huge splash at the trade deadline. Adding just some depth pieces to replace Cole and Zadorov should leave us with some room to make a big acquisition during the season.

Correct, but you need to actually be in a competitive position to do that.

Pinto and Sens not talking apparently we have to have someone worth offering. Heck Hogs and a pick something Pinto is someone that could breakout with right situation.
What’s the point of trading Hoglander if not for an actual upgrade?

You’d also have to pay Pinto substantially more.

There would also be plenty of interest from other teams that could likely make a better offer.

I think it's good for Chicago to give Bedard someone to play with who has some skill (his linemates last season were a disaster), and would be pretty middling for any team with dreams of contention. His best producing years seem to be solidly behind him, and he's not a significant play driver either.

Yeah, Bedard and Celebrini need people to play with.

They’d better be durable, too - a lot of high leverage minutes coming their way. As we saw in Chicago last year, not everyone is up to the task.

But seriously - what is the point in having cap space if you don't use it? You're just icing an incomplete team.

Trading for more players will cost assets we can't afford to lose.
If Guentzel and Reinhart were never coming here and Tanev is making 27M over 6 years, what can you do?

If Stamkos, Marchessault and Stephenson haven't signed yet, then they didn't have a new team lined up out of the gate. I haven't seen much information out there about who they're talking to. I still wouldn't mind Stamkos on a 3 year term.

If we can't add a big name forward I wonder if we invest more money on the defense ( a defenseman with some offense). Maybe Skjei but he probably goes to some cushy American market.

Not saying we should leave siginificant cap on table but some benefits include:
1. Cap flexibility to take advantage of other teams that hamstring themselves with cap space
2. A lot of these guys are requiring term that will mess up our ability to extend the Boesers/Höglander/etc
3. This keeps our cap efficiency in a good spot for the next couple of years when we need to acquire a target

It’s not the best situation right now but it could be far worse

Seattle.
San jose (not to the point of playoff contention but not getting the easy points from them like last year)
Meh. I think we’re still firmly a playoff team. Lindholm wasn’t acquired until the TDL and didn’t do a lot for us until the playoffs. We need to add someone to replace Zadarov. Then we’re essentially the same team as last year with lots of cap space to make moves in season.

So he's thinking we are in an arms race with Chicago and SJ? They've improved to 70 point teams now?
