Agreed, sorry if it came across like I was debating you on that point. Where I’m going is this: if smart GMs behave as if the rebuild as a dumb strategy, maybe there’s a reason.
Yes. But most of the smart GMs did have top picks from the draft already on their roster. It's going forward where they made smart decisions.

You do need high-end players and the top of the draft is a place you can find them.

My hunch as of right now - Suter is moved for a 2nd/3rd, and the Canucks parlay those assets into a deal for Boston's Pavel Zacha. Zacha is signed for 3 more years at $4.75M per, so fits the defintion of not a rental, the Canucks have been linked to him in the past, and the Canucks have had scouts at the Bruins' games lately.
I don't mind Zacha but he ain't a needle mover. Same realm as Chytil. Easier said than done but we need a game breaking talent for the top 6. Right now we have none.

Well the key thing is Pettersson. If he turns it around then Pettersson-Chytil-Zacha is excellent depth that provides scoring on all three lines. Without Pettersson, they are anemic.

Zacha Chytil would be a good 2/3C line up but Zacha has had to take on #1C responsibilities in Boston playing with countryman Pastrnak due to Lindholm sucking and Coyle aging out of a top6 spot. Poitras is not ready either fro that kind of role if they want to try and bounce back which they will want to do.

It's a good target but probably not that realistic

Pretty sure the Canucks are banking on Petterson recovering (or some miracle dumb GM trades a 1C one for one for him, may be possible) because trying to replace him would gut the team for prospects and futures.

No 1C's coming available this year. Next year maybe McDavid if you're smoking illegal opaque glass like products.

My memorable trade deadline deals:
Getting Bryan Smolinski for a 2007 2nd Rounder
Getting Eric Weinrich for Tomas Mojziis and a 2006 3rd rounder
Getting Mika Noronen for a 2006 2nd rounder
That Bryan Smolinski trade—if I recall correctly that was the deadline where there was plenty of speculation that Peter Forsberg could end-up with the Canucks. I believe the Province went as far as photoshopping Forsberg into a Canucks uniform on the ice.

Smolinski felt like such a let down from what we were getting hyped for.

Oh god that gave me flashbacks to Weinrich's stupid yellow visor

Also, Derek Roy for a 2nd in 2013 also falls into that category for me

Death blow

That sucks. Wanted them in on Boeser.

Expect Seattle to get a nice return.
I could see Seattle going after Boeser this off-season if he makes it to UFA.

Get Zacha and then go after Necas next off-season and we'll go from Team Sweden to Team Czechia.

Allvin is going to trade for Hughes, Boeser, Miller, Demko Pettersson skill level players. Players like Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Kane, Toews, Draistl... yep he is going to trade for them.
He doesn't believe in the draft.
He only worries about his next job.
A good GM will draft good players knowing that it takes to build a cup contender and not a pretender.

Vancouver fans seem to be content to play for a playoff spot instead of having cup hope.
Fighting to be as good as half the league is Allvin's plan but player that can move now will, they are no longer trapped by the CBA

After losing Miller I agree with you. Lekkerimaki is more likely to replace Boeser's current production than Raty is to replace Suter's overall game.

Willander is coming shortly.

Having two rookies on your bottom pairing, with another rookie as your 7th defenseman, is a recipe for disaster if even a single injury hits the top 4. You still absolutely want a Forbort or Soucy on your team in those situations, even if you have to consistently rotate the bottom pairing.
