Marchand looked old at 4 Nations, never mind the general distaste for him as a Canucks fan.
Are we getting him so we can heckle him every game and direct all our anger at him?
I am in if they allow us to throw shit at him every time there is a break in the game.

I personally think this team needs to be realistic about our 2025 chances. I don't see a point in making the playoffs to get wasted. What we can do is just call it a day, play for draft position but not totally gut the team. LIke what the Sharks did in 2015. They completely missed the playoffs but kept their pieces for a realistic go next year and they made the finals. We can work with free agency and see whats out there, hope everyone is healthy and go for a good 2025 start.
Play for draft position, that's a new term I like that one. If I was a player especially a good player I'm pretty sure I would be irate if I was this close to the playoffs and the team started taking players away.

Outside of anything is substantial which in this day and age is pretty much a first-round pick anything else is Just clutter

Unpopular I know already, (re: i know already, most haters gonna hate) but I'd be interested in buy FC low on J. Skinner. Yeahhh yeah selke defense, next kuz, and tocchet whatever, he's being massively misused in edm, and atleast this calendar year, hasn't been a disaster while producing plus results when in the top six.
Can skate, make okay plays, and really can shoot, which we could use, and obviously will be motivated to get next years contract.
I hate this. Edmonton is sort of hoisted on their own petard with the stupid signings (and recent revelations of NMCS). This would be helping an enemy out for no reason.

On the topics of playoffs or sell I think there's an ignored middle ground and I think it's the best path.

@MS is correct that the notion that we quit on the players to the tune of getting like an extra 2nd and 2 3rds or something and pick 3 picks higher is EA thinking, a complete quitter's perspective, and is how you get players to quit on your team because they feel quit on. Exhibit A being Toffoli and Tanev being let go for nothing after the players playing their hearts out during the bubble.

But the alternative isn't a self-rental.

I think it's to keep guys like Forbert and Suter. They're worth way more to us than they are in terms of assets for where we are.

But, assuming he won't sign a reasonable and shortish term deal, trade Boeser. Easily trade Boeser. And then relay the assets.

I get that even when he isn't productive he's become a good cog in a system. Plays smart, decent defensively, etc. But to trade him isn't exactly waving the white flag on this season.

We can deal him, and then use those assets along with Soucy or Hoglander or whatever else to find a mid-lower level asset that is here for a longer time.
I don't think Columbus moves off of Cole Sillinger, but think of someone like that.

To use an example that wouldn't actually work. What if we dealt Boeser to a team for a Brennan Othman quality player and a 1st, and then turn around and trade that first for Rickard Rakell out of Pittsburgh? Gain two long-term assets for a short-term asset.

Let's not get too hung up on the example I just used, as it's not quite realistic. But that sort of trade makes sense to me where we get a young forward who either adds to our physicality or speed in the lower lines, and then relay the first for a top 6 quality winger.

I don't think our chances of making the playoffs drop appreciably in such a scenario.

Dreger's comments have me thinking. Aside from the centres we've been speculating about (Norris, ROR, etc.) there's someone else that I wouldn't completely rule out considering the team.

William Karlsson

He's having a down year (18 points in 38 games), he struggled last playoffs (2 assists and no goals in 7 games), he's entering his mid 30s. Maybe they're looking at pivoting off a player on the decline. He's currently on LTIR but has been skating again for the past week.

The trade would obviously have to include Boeser. Vegas likes to make bold moves out of nowhere and they have the centre depth to spare.

Probably not happening, but it's just a thought.

This is the kind of thinking I like. If it’s true the Canucks are hunting for some names that aren’t necessarily on anyone’s trade boards, this could be one of them.

I find it hard to decide whether I want a retool or rebuild. Everybody has a different definition of what those are. It's easier for me to say who I would or wouldn't trade.

I sure hope they hold on to:
Willander
Lekkerimaki
Junior Petey
Their 1st and 2nd round picks for the foreseeable future.

These pieces I would avoid trading even if it meant a short term increase in competitiveness.

They can trade anyone else not named Hughes provided the return gives them an immediate bump in competitiveness or gets them younger with a high probability of being even better in 2-3 years. So, for example, I would be fine trading Boeser and Pettersson provided it returns equivalent or better talent (unlikely) or Tier 1 prospects with a high likelihood of reaching 1st line potential plus high value picks.

Pretty much agree. I hate trading for trading for tradings sake. And anyone should be available in a trade if we win the trade.

I think the trades we do make if we make any will probably leave a lot of posters stunned for precisely that reason.

A lot of the rental players are overcooked so to speak. So Toronto is a team I could see doing something stupid.

Not Klingberg stupid, they already tried that iirc

neither of the players that have been/are going to be traded are important to the rangers. lindgren is their version of soucy.
Fair enough but still trading a top 4 dman and top 6 winger off your roster while in a playoff race seems to go against the logic for holding Boeser unsigned past the TDL.

C'mon, you're better than this.
I don’t think Boeser without Miller is as effective, he’s a weird fit with Chytil who plays up tempo and no one works with Petey now so I don’t think it’s crazy to sell him.

Team would also have a ton of cap space at the TDL, Zucker got dealt for a 6th last year, we got Zadorov for a 3rd just because their selling teams didn’t want to retain money.

You can sell on Boeser and then buy low during the last hour of TDL

if we're speculating about potential centers that aren't mentioned often that the canucks could be after, i wonder if jordan kyrou is someone they've looked at

- turning 27 this year - fits with the age of our core
- ntc kicks in next season, currently on year two of eight at $8.125m
- has been at about the same level for the last few years - hasn't taken another step forward into superstar territory
- st. louis is rumored to be shaking things up with b. schenn on the block - maybe they see themselves in a purgatory without a young cornerstone like hughes and would rather cash out on these guys at a really high value rather than ride out their prime to not accomplish anything

an extended boeser might have some appeal to them as a change of scenery swap. send us the canadian, they get the midwest kid.

faceoff numbers seem to indicate kyrou almost never actually plays center, but maybe he's a better fit with petey and between the two of them we could actually have a first line center.

Honest...somewhat off topic question...

Out of all the Bruins during that final, where does Marchand rank on the hate scale? I have him 4th-ish

2 years ago I still had him at #1 but he’s dropped damn near the bottom for me. The Sedin thing was near unforgivable to me but Kelly Sutherland can kick rocks up his urethra also.
