Bolstering the D was so damn simple, and yet they waited until after trading the teams 1C.

Could have avoided this whole mess. 1st for a 2nd pairing Dman was in the cards long before the season even started.
How exactly could they have avoided Miller being an abusive asshole? The team had to have an intervention on him game 4 in the season lol. He imploded in November and they had to put him on "leave," (but what was probably an internal suspension).

Like this was October and November shit lol. The Penguins were never going to trade MP that soon.

what would you want from winnipeg for brock boeser...? 1st+ young prospect? cole perfetti? probably untouchable but why not team wants to get younger and faster. he fits the timeline better.

I think we need to push D Petey as hard as we can this season and see if he can handle it. I'd like to see him stick with the big club for the rest of the year, if that means we have to turf Soucy, that's fine, we can recoup something for him.

Soucy has been dreadful this year, and D Petey emerging and looking so damn solid is a gift from the hockey gods that we should double down on and see if its real or not.

we finally have d depth. we shouldn't turf Soucy. Rotate the bottom slot between injuries, forbert, soucy, and Petey Jr

January last year he said it in a article I was reading the other day

Hmmm. In the article, he seems pretty set on resting his knee. But some posters here believe that was not the correct course of action. Rather, he should have progressively strengthened the muscles around. Perhaps that’s the source of the complaints about him not being prepared at training camp?

To add to that: I suspect that he has another undisclosed injury that’s affecting his shot. A while back he had that 2 goal game and the second goal was a vintage Petey snipe. Shortly afterwards he left the game and missed the next 2. Probably not a coincidence.

The question is, can he overcome these injuries? Will they be recurrent? Because if he can’t, I think we can safely conclude that he’s not the type of player than can work around those limitations and still perform at a superstar level.

Players need time to themselves to just not think about hockey. Players are all kinda 'outdoor dogs' if you will. Tyler Myers lived in many different places, but chose to live in Kelowna in the summers. And still does.

EP unfortunately probably has to go back to Sweden to do his thing.

Play DPetey w Soucy for 5-7 more games.

If he continues to develop then you leave the two of them alone for the rest of the year. Let's be honest if DP develops in to a Soucy type player its a huge win. Its worth more than a 3rd round pick.

His a big, mobile defenseman. And more than that, he's really smart.

Anyone else see Linus Karlsson's desparate bid to stay onside? That's what the team needs more of. I don't think he made it, but god he f***ing tried.

He needs to put in the work to rehab his injuries and have a really great offseason training. He can do that in Sweden if that's what works for him.

I'm sure that's something that's been addressed by 2 guys who look suspiciously alike.

God, Petey is such a horse. Aquilini's been knocking it out of the park lately. Nothing is uglier than a man making his stride. What's the old Richard Branson line? Dead at 40 or billionaire by 40?

If Pettersson's still struggling with a knee problem, there is absolutely no reason for him to go to 4 Nations. He's doing very little with the team right now so they should just rest him until he can perform again. They can call up Raty.

But I'm really starting to think that this is just not the market for him. I found it interesting in the recent The Athletic player poll that players say they wouldn't want to play in Canada because of the scrutiny. It can't be easy to play literally one bad period and have the fans calling for your head. You'd like to see fans take it easier on players who are struggling, but I guess it is what it is.

It definitely leaves the team in a conundrum. If they can find a credible replacement, they should probably do so. But it will be hard. No, Dylan Cozens is not a credible replacement. There are no free agent centers that would be interesting. I don't see anything on the trade market.

I'm pretty sure you have to trade for the player before the deadline to be able to offer the 8th year.
You are absolutely correct. Thank you for the clarification. I have followed hockey for many years and for some reason was unaware of this restriction. Unfortunately, that makes it a lot harder for other teams to compete for younger UFAs against their current team. Another team will really have to blow him away to lure him out of Toronto as there has always been a perception that contract value is very important to Marner (and his Dad). That said, if the Leafs get blown out of the playoffs early again and Marner comes under increasing scrutiny, perhaps he will want a fresh start elsewhere. It's not as if he hasn't made lots of money already...

One bad period? Is that what you think it is? Are you sure its not one bad calendar year?

Yea it must be the fans' fault, clearly that is what holding Hughes back, or Demko last year from being a Vezina candidate. I mean the fans didn't totally chant Petey's name in the playoff trying to encourage him, after he plays pretty bad for months.

Yea, Canadian fans just calls for player's head after "literally one bad period."

It's definitely not EP's ideal market, but Boudreau has shown and proven that there is a way to help him. Unfortunately, I don't think this old school coaching staff and management, wants to or knows how to do that. He needs positive reinforcement instead of being forced to sign a contract/threatened publicly with trades/having the coach ask your bully to bully you some more/etc. Good managers should be able to deal with different types of personalities. It's just the way the world is these days.

On the one hand, he could definitely use the break, but on the other hand, my gut tells me that his SHL coach may be able to "reach" him on the mental side and help him through this tough patch.

I deal with people's Tendonitis often. Yes f*** it can very debilitating. Imagine tennis elbow where you can hardly hold anything in your knee, no good for skating. It usually responds well to rehab but not always. You would hope a top athlete with top physio's doctors and other voodoo would get it sorted.
It's been so long now you wonder if it just won't resolve.

I'm still a firm believer that mgmt should be looking to "sell high" on Kudryatsev given the rapid rise of EP2, Willander their top d prospect, the acquisition of Mancini and belief in Mynio.

You are not going to just give him away, but could be used in a package for a Top 6 F; ideally a C or LW.
I would not go down that road until seeing him in a handful of NHL games.

What do you guys think of trying to acquire Konecny? Philly is going nowhere. If BB6 gets traded the assets (plus our 1st or Lekkeramaki) - could that get a deal done.

I’d be curious if the emergence of DP will have them reconsider including Willander in a trade if it means landing a good top 6C.
