After seeing the Dallas deal, I think it's likely that they were in on Pettersson too.

They were rumoured to be in on Markus and Miller at various points, it's no coincidence that as soon as those deals went through with other teams they jumped and got some of the best available C and D rentals.

Just like how we saw Winnipeg jump at the chance to get Monahan last season immediately after the Canucks got Lindholm, the price likely got boosted.

Yeah the most important part in the deal is the 1st rounder. We got the higher value 1st so we could flip it.

The available D this year are extremely bad, going into the year, the only ones I clocked from teams who I didn't expect to contend were Pete and Adam Larsson, who re-signed early.

Cole, Martinez, Dumoulin, Jokiharju, Savard, Petry are the rest? They're all overpaid and bad.

While we might want a young, mid-20s forward who can grow with the core, I'm pretty sure every team in the league wants that. Not only that, we have almost no assets to give up to do it either.

About the only thing the team has going for it right now assets wise is cap space. That's useful as we saw in the discounted Zadorov deal last year, but less so when everyone is about to get a whole ton of it at the same time.

Norris' name has come up as a suggestion here, but I'm not sure he moves the needle in any meaningful way.

The one that perplexes me is Colorado. You make that Rantanen trade because you don't like the contract rumours and you want to get deeper.

Miller trade would have let them get off the guy they want to get off the most in Mittlestadt while buying low on elite talent who would absolutely fit in with Mackinnon's vibe.

There was a window for them to do it before NYR came back to the table yesterday.

Just a mindblowing miss for them imo.
