Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | That's All Folks

It's super cool that we keep on hearing Lekkerimaki's name as a comparable when he was signed after a disastrous draft + 1 season and had zero leverage. In fact, giving him any bonuses was generous given the fact he was struggling in a tier 2 Swedish league that season.

If you don't end up signing Willander because you don't want to pay him a $200k bonus after he's been a top four NHL defenceman for a season, I really question your long term decision making.

Everyone is going to get paid more because of cap inflation and I'm fine increasing his salary to reflect that. But I am not sure he's going to get a big pay day or something similar to Cole just given the fact that he only played 54 game this year, after only playing 35 games the year before, and 54 the year before that.

The Canucks, with our depth of young waiver ineligible defensemen, are actually in a pretty unique position to be fine with re-signing him knowing that he likely will miss a decent amount of time to injury.
I think Forbort had a pretty good season overall, but his value lies within his contract (1 year $1.5m). I get that with the cap going up, players are going to get paid more, and I don't mind going up a bit just for that alone. But anything over 1 year and $1.75-2m, and we are better off finding "the next Forbort" or "the next Cole". Bottom pairing vet defensive Dmen aren't hard to find, and the Nucks are fairly good at getting these players on cheap 1 year deals. No need to overpay for that position.

I also wouldn't want a vet 3LD to be signed more than 1 year term anyways, as I think D-Petey will be more than ready to be a full time NHL'er by 2026-27 latest. A league min depth D on the left side is all we need by then.

I'm not concerned in the least. He'll sign, a lot of posters here will quietly run their peepee soaked underwear through the wash and act like they weren't having a panic attack to end all panic attacks over this non issue.
Blindly saying he will sign, even though every report right now is saying there are struggles with his signing to Vancouver.

Calling out posters because they are pessimistic makes no sense, considering you have no clue what is going on, only tom and canucks and what Rick is leaking to the media.

Everybody has the right to feel disappointed at how this is going so far.

Of course everything can change with one phone call, but right now it’s basically just bad news.

Willander
  • There’s been no progress in contract negotiations
  • Zeev Buium got maximum Schedule A’s bonuses for the next two seasons
  • Mentions how Brendan Gaunce ended up getting some Schedule A bonuses by being -2 in his rookie season and finished top-10 on the Canucks
  • Believes that Schedule A bonus are the issues between the two sides
  • Thinks there’s a preference from Willander to turn pro
  • For whatever reason, the Canucks don’t like structuring ELCs with market-rate bonuses; the same with Lekkerimaki and other players

Penny wise, pound foolish.

He's saying that Willander is only entitled to the Schedule A bonuses if he is a top-4 defenceman.
Ok i need to slow down and read posts and not just skim. I thought he was hyping Willander up like he was playing like a top 4 defenseman already. My mistake I'll own that.

Do you really think he's going to sit in college for 2 more years, throwing away something like 2 million dollars over a disagreement over a couple hundred thousand that he likely won't hit anyway.

It makes sense given Willander's demeanor that he might care more about his education than potentially playing 2 NHL games. He might want some time to cool off after losing the Frozen Four than jumping right into playoff heat in Abby.

That said, the hand wringing from Cam and Rick implies there's some truth to the negotiation standstill. He's probably willing to just wait out the negotiations while his agent Todd Diamond plays the media game both for him (through Irf here) and against the team (this morning).

By the way, I will gladly eat crow, I honestly was getting concerned, it wasn’t in panic mode or anything, but I was definitely in the this is just classic Canucks luck mode.

I’m really really happy he is staying, this is very big news🥳

This lines up with everything we’ve been told. He prioritizing school and preserves his scholarship until the end of the semester.

Turns out the kid just wanted to finish his semester out in case he ever wants to go back to school. Probably heard he'd have to re-do all his courses from this semester if he ever came back and was like f that
