so? they massively downgraded their current roster heading into the playoffs. I understand cutting bait when they did...it might work out in the long term, but it didn't do them any good in the short term. I think they tried to pivot at the deadline and couldn't get other deals across the finish line (probably because they were too busy pinching pennies).

Prices were ridiculous for rental forwards. Prices were probably astronomical for any 23-25 year old forward.

The issue is any management group has to contend with the "win-now" and "make the playoffs at all cost" mandate set out by Francesco Aquilini.

This franchise is never going to be in a position to stockpile draft picks under this ownership group. The probable best course of action is to flip assets (prospects and picks) for a player that can immediately step in and contribute now (like almost every trade we've seen). This was the common occurrence during the Benning regime where a returning pick/prospect would be flipped for an age gap player.

We were discussing Carolina.

The conversations about rosters and agreements and disagreements are of particular interest to me, here. I don't think Allvin's targets have always jived with the types of guys Tocchet would covet.

This is my impression as well. I know several people here assumed Tocchet had sway on Desharnais being signed, but I really don't think he did. Outside of his size, Desharnais doesn't play anywhere close to what Tocchet likes from his players. Hence why he was so bad. Well, one of the reasons.

I also doubt they're keeping Tocchet for under 5M. If Aqulini's wants his playoff revenue, he needs to stop being cheap.

You're just manifesting the inevitable "[Confirmed with Link] Suter signs with Vegas - 3 years 1.5 AAV."

You jest but I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a long term lower AAV contract. Sometimes those work out like Nick Paul (7y/3.15m) and other times are immediately regrettable like Pierre Engvall (7y/3.0m) or Miles Wood (6y/2.5m).

FYI for those that care, I updated my spreadsheet with roster and cap info for the off-season.

Will Cuylle offer sheet please.
I agree with all of this except for DeBrusk. I’d put him in the mediocre category.

His per 60 even strength production is worse than Heinen’s this year despite his most common linemates being Pettersson, Boeser and Hughes. His individual shot generation and possession numbers are down to career lows, and a drop off in even strength production is masked by the fact he is likely going to run the most ice time and highest on-ice SH% of his career by season’s end.

He’s added value as a goal scorer on the PP, but for the price they’re paying for him you’d hope he’d be more of a play driver, either generating more individual scoring chance creation by himself or driving possession better.
id rather have Suter over Debrusk in an ideal world.

Francesco isn’t the cheap one fwiw. He’s the figurehead with the Canucks because the rest of the family doesn’t like the spotlight. Luigi (the father) is notoriously frugal.

They usually won’t skimp out on the public facing stuff like the salary cap, but the behind the scenes stuff is a different story, as anyone who’s worked in the business community in Vancouver can attest to.

yeah that goes back to, they value being consistently competitive with a tight budget over winning a cup, by a lot.

They needed Suter to score 25 goals in order to convince themselves to pay him? If they wanted to sign him they could of gotten him at 3 ish earlier, now his price is 4+ . That being said it would be very Canuck to sign him to his inflated value.

The same Zadorov that said he old take a small discount to stay here because his wife and family loved it here so much, the same guy that later said the team waited too long to make an offer, they had months and waited until after Guentzal told them he was signing with Tampa on July 1, then came the offer on July 1 but he already had a deal with Boston. This can be looked up. Zadorov was loved by the fans, team mates and made them all 2 inches taller.
He had one offer from the Canucks, too late, why would he lie? The Canucks on the other hand would so they didn't look so imcompetent for letting a fan favorite and playoff unicorn walk for nothing when they had him already. His post season presser he stated he didn't want 5 mil, he said "you guys keep saying that, not me" to the scrum. You can find it and watch his lips move in front of his teammates.

Of course he is going to promote the team that just gave him 30 million dollars, only an idiot would disparage that team. And Lindholm was a team mate from a room where he had good chemistry. Sometimes a player hits with a group, he swung on and belted it with that group.
I believe he had two if not three offers

they took a risk to get Rantanen thinking they could extend him and once they realized they couldn't, they traded him for futures because the risk of losing Rantanen and the asset they spent >>>>>> the potential of winning a cup.
I think Carolina figured Necas wasn’t someone they planned on keeping into his ufa years. Likely to have moved him in the summer or just let him walk like Skjei and Pesce in 2026. So were willing to swing for Rant hoping they could extend him. But it didn’t go that way. Rather than roll the dice they opted to get something instead though they made themselves weaker for the PO.

It was widely reported that Foote/Tocchet liked Desharnais and that they had a phone call with him before signing him to convince him to come here. That was totally a coaching staff signing.

Still waiting on the practice facility. They’ve owned the club for like 2 decades now.

I think it's well known that Necas will not extend with them period, the ship has sailed on that one so it's not really a Carolina planned on it kind of thing.

Agreed with the latter, they tried to extend Rantanen, couldn't do it and aborted on that plan.
