It only makes sense if Hronek or Myers goes the other way, but why in god’s name would either team do it?

All of our energy (and assets) should now be spent on finding that gamebreaking line 1 forward. Going to be management’s biggest test now, and it’s going to be damn near impossible.
 
So with the Canucks having a rebuild defense, who would you target with a Petterson trade?

Personally I think taking the risk he will bounce back next year is more valuable than whatever he would bring in a trade but I'm curious what people would even want for him?

I'd go for Ehlers. Will cost $12m but Marner will go for $17m IMO. The league is awash in cap space.

If Winnipeg doesn't re-sign him I'd absolutely be up for sending a 3rd for his rights.

Ok I think you guys are leaning too hard into cap inflation… Ehlers has yet to hit 80+ points and you guys think that will cost 12M?!?!
Probably 8-8.5M at best.

I think the Canucks may have had interest in Dobson when looking to address their D, but with MP3 being acquired and Willander coming up quick, it's hard to see the Canucks wanting to mortgage the assets it would take to acquire Dobson and where he would fit.

The more likely/logical things to occur are augmenting the edges of the defense, and targeting a top six C.

Have a look at how many top tier free agents there are and how much cap space each team has. It's going to be stupid out there.

I think people underestimate how much salaries have been depressed due to the readjustments coming out of the 2012 lockout and then covid. For a couple of years after the cap was initially put in place there was a period of rapid inflation like this.

Daniel Briere signed a contract in 2007 equivalent to $14m in today's cap dollars. He was definitely a tier below what Marner is now.

yeah and that seems to jive with what's being reported since the MP trade and now with the extension signed.

i think realistically teams will go to players and say hey here is the comparable in terms of cap% and this is what we are going to give you. I imagine for someone who has not gone PPG, 8-8.5M is probably where they sit cap% wise. Really bad napkin math, like probably 7.5M for wingers below PPG in the flat cap world. 8.5M would be like a 15% increase which is reasonable, you can argue it should be 20% increase and that could be more realistic. But 12M is like almost double, that's not going to happen with guys like Ehlers.

Also from a cap space allocation standpoint going into next season, they need to set aside some money for a top 6 centre + a Boeser extension or a top 6 winger replacement.

Dobson would probably eat up more than it would be worth for the Canucks considering they already have Hronek on RD and Myers making 3M.

Wow you really hate Boeser.

Boeser has scored at a 30+ goal pace practically every year. PDG spent a lot of time playing in the top 6 last season. Had he played on PP1 you think he would have gotten 20 goals 50 points?

I think Ehlers style fits with what we are looking for too, plays with a lot of pace.

I wouldn’t be looking to just move Boeser, but if the right deal comes along. It’s all about moving some pieces on the board after losing Miller.
 
Not surprised someone would post even worse garbage than taj, but i am surprised how many ppl took the bait, especially on dobson when our D and G are pretty much set the next half decade.

Need skilled youngish Fwd. (COZENS not ehlers)

I'm willing to do some sort of 8MM x 6 deal for Boeser but I would deal him tomorrow if it gets to 7-8 years. His skating is way too laborious and you'll always need to seek out speed around him to make up for it. Pettersson's skating laboriously, DeBrusk has just been average with his speed, Suter's ridiculously slow, Blueger isn't fast. Joshua slow. Garland, Chytil, Sherwood, DOC like there aren't enough burners and you already need your next two acquisitions to be fast. For sure at least one of them, and the other at least average.

The two most likely top nine prospects in the organization are slow as well (AR, JL). It's just an obvious issue with this team. If you're promoting Lekkerimaki... man are those two scoring lines that they're on going to need to find speed around them.

They also have to avoid NMCs in the latter stages of that contract for Brock as well. Have to have an out. You know what you're doing. It's a risky one.
