Incoming $13M Bouchard extension 😏

Kind of unrelated - laughed my ass off at Nurse being in the Oilers’ first team 21st century team over Ekholm. I don’t care if Ekholm only played 1 game for the Oilers, he’s their best defensemen not named Pronger to have played for that team since the early 2000s. And he’s their best defensemen right now.

Ekholm/Bouchard, Smith/Pronger should have been the D pairings. But the NHL won’t name Pronger for the probable backlash from Oiler fans.

11.6 ain’t shit now

113M cap lol

Quinn's cap hit is going to be like 17M which is totally fine, he can have whatever money he wants.

But realistically, yeah there are going to be like 10+ teams not ever spending over 100M and there are going to be a lot of caproom around for everyone and hoarding cap is not going to be that useful. It's going to take awhile for folks to get used to that what "arming yourself with cap" is no longer going to be as true.

so a cap many teams really can't afford.

which is not a cap at all.

the nhl still has rev share so i think "poor" teams will still spend pretty healthily but i do think it'll take a while before there's another league wide cap crunch like we've had for the last 5ish years

I'm assuming the broadcasts are going to be less about hockey and more about milking the business to the max. More expensive gates and hospitalities, more ads per 60, gambling being pushed more, cheap and accessible merch to meet masses and collectors alike, all are amplified and more expensive.

Crazy to think that a team could cough up roughly 20 million more in two years without it affecting how the product looks.
It's funny because hockey could generate substantially more revenue marketing their players say, like the NBA, but... They also loathe 'big' personalities in the past like Ovie, Subban, etc

Well the former needs absolutely zero coverage as far as i'm concerned, but in general i agree that the team first culture in hockey has not been something that fits marketing potential like a glove

Excellent news about the cap. Should help with the cap increase of OEL's buy out. 2.2 to 4.7.

Also gives teams more breathing room for trades. Hopefully the trade market picks up.

Also, with the salary cap news - I might be in the minority here - I’d totally do 8x8 for Brock. I just don’t see how we replace what he brings, even if he tops out at 25-30 goals, 55-65 points.
Great and all but this team needs to find a way to get real upside into their line up. Keeping the same performers and then paying them more and more is not working. A mid prospect pool and a mid team makes it much harder to add upside.

That cap news is crazy. Some implications:
Boeser would be wise to sign a 1 year deal.
EP is a bargain
Demko's price just went up by at least $1M
Hughes is going to get paid

Friedman on 32 Thoughts podcast:

"In Miller's case, the feeling is it's been Eastern United States and I think that's opened up a bit. I think that's more like now give me a good situation or a contender. There's been some rumors about Miller and Colorado. I think if that was real, you know, last time I checked Colorado isn't Eastern United States, but I don't think he would reject it for geographical reasons."

What would a deal with Colorado look like? Any thoughts?

The Avs would probably look to include Casey Mittelstadt, current 2C, in the deal. $5.75m AAV x 3 years.

Aquaman gets hate but at least he's not afraid to max out the cap every year. Gotta give the man props for that at least.
That might have to change if there is a big down turn in the economy and dollar.

While Vancouver is one of the richer clubs in the league these big increases make even the weakest teams more able to sign players. IMO it hurts Canadian clubs less in TO, Montreal and a little bit Vancouver

Brock, 9 years, lots of talk about "he scored 40 goals" but the Canucks traded Horvat at 30+ goals with weeks left in the season, not only traded 39 goal scorer but added a kings ransom as a sweetener so the goals scored not THE reason to keep a player. Pretty much traded two 40 goal scorers already.

Colorado Avalanche
  • An executive told Friedman that the Avalanche should acquire Trevor Zegras
Los Angeles Kings
  • Don’t think the Kings are rushing to trade Brandt Clarke; has got other teams asking what the Kings are doing
  • The way Clarke plays is a little bit at odds with the way the Kings want to play; sees a player constrained by their system; may not be a stylistic match
  • Mikey Anderson might have broken his hand; might open up a spot for Clarke
Vancouver Canucks
  • Sabres are still working their way through what they want to do with Pettersson; still thinks they are in it
  • Blue Jackets can trade for Pettersson if they want to; can see them looking at what they are building and being hesitant to trade
  • Teams are betting that wherever Pettersson ends up, he’ll be better off
  • Rutherford’s interviews were a message to the market; be prepared for trades and it might not be as good a return as you like or think
  • Both Miller and Pettersson have nearly been traded once each; Miller to the Rangers and Pettersson to the Hurricanes
  • Miller has opened up the places he’s willing to go; looking for a good situation and a contender
  • If the Avalanche interest in Miller was real, does not think he would reject a trade there for geographic reasons
  • In Miller’s case, Canucks have a trade available right now if they wanted to do it
  • Thinks there’s a lot going on in Buffalo and have some big decisions to make; Pettersson rumours are all part of that
  • Doesn’t sound optimistic about re-signing Boeser
  • Players didn’t react to Karlsson’s first NHL goal and that bothered Bukauskas

The core of this team has failed to get it done for a while now. Horvat was at least considered excess because Canucks had two other top 6 centers. Canucks don't have an excess of wingers anymore. Well maybe bottom 6 wingers. A 1st and a 2nd for Boeser I'd take it.

This is insane. And yes suddenly 11.6 for a 1C is nothing. Pete's value (and Miller's) has just sky rocketed. Also Hughes must be licking his lips right now. Dude will be pushing 16mill when he resigns LMAO.

PAY, HIM.

have you check ticket prices for some of the teams? I wanted to watch a NJD games last season when I was in NYC for a work trip and the prices in the upper bowl was like $25. I imagine the pricing is probably true for a lot of teams. Even with rev share, there is no bloody way some owners will take the risk of committing themselves to over 100M in cap because they could suck and the gate rev drops. I don't think they will ever lose money but I also don't think they want to run their teams at even.

Hence the Gary Mason article, I suppose. Yeah, whatever we get back will be disappointing.
