It was never Pettersson for those two, it was Miller and even then it would’ve had to include picks/prospects as well. I believe it was confirmed today that the Hurricanes offer for Pettersson was more than their offer for Rantanen, so Necas+

They have sources...I went to one of the guys stags in Scottsdale last year. East coast NCAA guys. They are pretty well connected. No idea if they have a fresh source or are just repeating what is out there however.

i'd be pretty disappointed if sillinger or johnson were the centerpiece of a pettersson deal. they're both okay players but the canucks need to be aiming higher than okay. i don't think cbj would do fantilli and i don't think jr/allvin are willing to wait for lindstrom but i'd want to see one of them in the deal

This doesn't make a ton of sense. They signed Miller and then were going to immediately trade him? Meanwhile leaving Horvat unsigned heading into the last year of his contract.
Timeline might be right but saying that trading Bo "unleashed forces in the room" is way too dramatic. Reads like a reporter that had a good relationship with Bo that's miffed we didn't give him $68M as a 2C.
Bruce's account of losing Pearson as a glue guy seems way more plausible. Don't see any strong voices with him and Zadorov gone. Maybe only Myers or Demko.
Feel like we're actually willing to lose Miller at a loss now, if the Rangers were close. I don't see EP traded unless we get a top young player or large ransom back. Aiming for Fantilli/Power, probably offered KJ/Byram ++.

Too bad the Pitt offer of 23 1st + 24 1st for Miller never went through. Yager and Helenius in those slots.
Also one part of moving on from Bo that is underrated is how badly we needed a culture change. Trading him and making Hughes the captain was an important part in moving on from the Benning era. Unleashed forces in the room? Maybe but we needed a culture change.
I "think" this goes further back to when both were still unsigned. I recall the rumor was that Bo was part of the core and they were going to keep him over JT. It feels like a long time ago now and I can't quite remember, but wasn't JT's signing a bit of a surprise? Everyone thought they were going to keep Bo instead.
We realistically only had cap space for one of them following JT's 99 pt season. Common thought was we could get Bo in the high 6 or low to mid 7M AAV range but he was way tougher in negotiation than JT was, so the latter signed first.
I don't think that was an indication we were planning on keeping one or the other though. Like JR recently said, you have to sign your top players. JT signed before he was even on the block.
By the time Bo scored 30 before halfway through the season, the writing was on the wall we both couldn't afford him (long term as a 2C) and needed to maximize assets in a losing season. I love Bo but the narrative he was betrayed by mgmt leaves out his tough negotiation (can't blame him as he got $68M eventually) and the unexpected disaster of the second Bruce season torpedoing faith in the mix of the core (deja vu?).
Rumours of a rift between Bo and JT also seem bogus. Dhaliwal used the term "thick as thieves" which is in a different galaxy as the perception between JT and Petey.

Gross. May as well drive Hughes to the airport since you’re on your way there.
Can’t trade two 90-100 pt centres and only get that back.
Better just to keep what we have.

With the benefit of a crystal ball and hindsight, would the Canucks still have picked Miller over Horvat?
I understand why they did it. Miller was a more dynamic player and on his good days probably a 20-30 points a season better than Horvat. But he was also older, and as we've seen, far more problematic in terms of team chemistry.
So if the Canucks had a 'do-over' I think they'd have stuck with their captain--Horvat. But that's my opinion.
