How does this total hypothetical playout if Hughes tried to rectify the situation and then went to management and said, "well I tried, there's obviously no fixing this, one of these guys has to go." He's got a front-row seat to all of this, it's his dressing room.
So your hypothesis is that GM Quinn Hughes is now orchestrating the trading of Miller, and Pettersson, and beyond (likely Boeser, Demko, etc.)?

I see that point of view and think it may be crazy offer time (and I’ve suggested it before). That’s why we need to make an offer they can’t refuse for Luke Hughes.

Obviously not where I’d start but maybe:
Miller/Petey + Willander/Lekk + 1st/2nd for Hughes/Hughes.
This is absurd.

Apparently he did say something along the lines of "we'll trade Miller if the price is right and keep him if not" it's just that Gary forgot to put that in.

Yes, I acknowledged as much in a previous post.

But I mean, this is the team president publicly acknowledging the juiciest piece of gossip in the league this year - that's obviously going to get way more attention than "we might trade Miller or we might not" which is just boring.

Wouldn't Quinn be eligible for trade protection in his next contract? Surely he will get the full NMC, so Vancouver can't just "do it to you" like they are open to Petey. I think this is a non-issue.

It still doesn't mean Quinn will want to stay, but him worrying about being traded without his permission 8 months after signing his next extension is not a thing.
I don't really think the Canucks brass would attempt to have any machinations of trading Quinn. And he will surely get an NMC no matter where his next contract is.

I just mean that if they jerk around Petey, their agent isn't going to cut Canucks' brass any breaks. Brisson will play absolute hardball at every opportunity and likely very strongly suggest Quinn wait out until UFA.

How would you handle it if someone was in your face at work everyday for the last 4 years though? Just sit there quietly and take it? It's easy for us to say from behind our keyboards, but I don't know what people are expecting in this scenario. Not directing at you but seems like a lot of victim blaming.
Fair point. I still say, if they thought that only one party was driving this and the other was simply responding out of stress or whatever, they would only look to trade the one who is the driver.

No, he is clearly an asshole and Pettersson is clearly a weirdo. The "normal guys" on the team (ie. Boeser, Myers, Garland etc.) don't seem to have issues with anyone. I wouldn't call Hughes normal because Hockey Gods are not normal.

How is he "clearly a weirdo" though? Just because he didn't like to getting bullied for the last 4 years?

for as long as ive watched pettersson, he has always seemed a bit autistic. like just the way he would handle reporters who would ask basic questions and he would answer them with such contempt and "sassyness" lol. Miller is more of a normal guy, but i think he has a bit of the spaz kid in him and never grew out of it. not that i know for sure , but just guessing from the way we have seem him act on the ice, and previous dramas with horvat vs miller feud

Just my own thoughts not based on anything being said in the press.
I think they’ve already decided to move on from Miller and will wait to see how EP performs without Miller before making a decision on him. I suppose that could change if they get an offer for EP that blows them away but that’s not likely.

On Miller, I wonder if the team puts together a win streak here if they’ll wait until the TDL or maybe even the off season.

I think a lot depends on what happens in the standings in the next few weeks. The team is 1 point out and Calgary plays Washington tonight.

I just dont get how you can retool this team in a contender by the time quinns contract is up. I rather bet on petey going back to a star level player
Let Quinn Hughes run the show, Let me make the call, Who does he want to stay, who does he want to go, Does he want BOTH to go?

That's the key 100%, making Hughes as happy as possible

I’ve always liked both Byram and Cozens. But I still think we give up the best player in a Petey trade, and we’ll regret it for a long time.
Petey is a tough nut to crack. I’m not sure what to make of the situation. I’m sure he’ll bounce back at some point and put up another 100pts season. But I also think he’ll get into another funk at some point and become completely disengaged and useless again. 11.6 is a lot if he’s not producing year after year. I wonder if the trust between management/his teammates and this player is just broken. It’s hard to think they’d consider trading him otherwise.

Agents/players/teams talk behind the scenes. This situation is already extremely well known by anyone who wants to know. The only time teams get truly ripped off is if they make a quick move that surprises everyone because teams didn't know player X was available.

Or if they drag it out too long.

Again, I hope you're right that this is some sort of 4D chess move, and Rutherford obviously has much better insight on the situation than some dweeb on the internet (ie me) so it's reasonable to give some deference to him.

I agree that the messaging from the interview had to be "we'll trade Miller if the price is right and keep him if not" and if that was what he said, I don't think he'd be getting roasted on here. The problem is that the message that came across was "we can't fix this internally". To me this means the Canucks will eventually be forced into a trade, and the leverage in their current position can simply be waited out. I just don't see how this is preferable to just not saying anything at all.

It's preferrable because it shifts the pressure onto other GMs to make something work pre-TDL.

Miller wants NYR, Drury we know wants him, but Drury was bold enough to ask for retention. Why? That's a GM that knows VAN is in a bind. Dolan knows this too. And so, waiting inevitably erodes VAN's position further and NYR gets their man... Unless, JR drags this out to the point where the suitors are not just NYR, and both NYR and Miller lose out on a run together.

Dolan will not be happy with Drury then. Further, Miller may abandon NYR as the optimal destination. Everyone will have to reassess the landscape.

If JR confuses the message from "we can't fix this internally" to "we'll trade Miller at the right price"... His posturing immediately loses any weight. Without acknowledging what is already apparent, he appears insincere . Without sincerity, nobody will or should care what he says.

I guess it's true "One bad apple spoils the bunch", considering it was just Miller trade talk, now it's Pettersson, Boeser and Demko aswell. Hopefully the shiny red apple that is left "Hughes" doesn't spoil through this gong show aswell.

This is just bizarre behavior that two grown adults can't get over their differences for the greater of the team. If it didn't make a complete mess of the entire roster I would say trade them both. This is ridiculous that it's come down to this.

As for Rutherford and Allvin, I just wish they would keep their mouths shut.

Being a Nucks fan has been brutal the past 10+ years.
