There's no reason they couldn't have found a late 1st rounder for Brock f***ing Boeser. I don't buy that for a second. Aquilini just didn't want to move him because this team can't score.

They have shown really minimal interest in signing Boeser, and have been effectively talking down the player's value. Now Tocchet is cutting back his ice time. He's almost surely gone to greener pastures. Suter could go either way, I could see them paying him because they don't have anything else going on and a ton of cap space.

Signing Boeser is the worst outcome, he has not been an effective player in 3 of the past 4 seasons. Trading Boeser or keeping him and letting him walk are both defendable positions.

Boeser should have taken the $40M over 5 and ran to the bank. Love the guy but nobody should be giving term and $$$ to a guy in his late 20s trending towards being a 20g/20a player. I don't know, maybe some team will offer a crazy contract but it will be a huge mistake.

Can guarantee no one will be trading for Boeser's rights. The only GM's who would pay a premium in UFA are Trotz and Lou Lam and both GMs are on very thin ice right now.
I sense he will probably settle on a 2 year 6 mil contract if he ends up in UFA (probably with LA or Carolina).

They lost to the Knight and the Avs, both offensive juggernaut, which is something you definitely cannot say about this version of the Canucks. If everything goes right for Vancouver the series might go 6 games, but there is absolutely no way Vancouver wins a best-of-7 series against the Jets (or Stars/Oilers/Avs/etc).

Oh god, we're back to "meaningful games in March" discourse.
It’s pretty clear that the league values Boeser as a Tyler Toffoli like return, they should of gotten a 2nd + Prospect (recent 2nd/3rd rnder) and they would of been better off. Now they have a sad, mopey Boeser skating around doing his boo hoo poor me, I was loyal, where’s my retirement contract.

there's also the reality that if you let the wheels go off for the rest of the season you take a risk with not being able to put them back on over the summer. we're one good season removed from being a perennial lottery team.
in general, this team has had enough drama this season and the risk of trade requests from valued players this offseason is already very real. as a student of body language i feel like several players on this team are periodically rallying from a steady state of depression and the team only plays well when multiple players pick that game to rally. prior to losing hughes, who always comes to play, a lot of that was covered up, but it's been very apparent lately.
boeser to me is a classic glue guy who gets along with everyone. so if the potential return for boeser was pitiful then i can see keeping the guy around to keep the boat afloat. depending on how the room is doing it's also a reason to extend him.

Suter im actually fine with re signing to something reasonable as you say. There is nothing reasonable you can sign Boeser.
Why not? In a market where Brad Marchand could only get a conditional 1st, I buy that a slumping Boeser couldn't return one.
Him having Toffoli-like deadline value makes sense to me.
We are back to signing “character” guys now aswell. Whats Beagle & Rooster up to these days.

Especially when it's been talked about how if he doesn't re-sign with us he'll likely go to Minnesota. Not a lot of teams are going to want to toss out a 1st + for a guy they don't think will re-sign. Even more so when he's a complimentary scorer not an impact one.

yes we are. i am worried about this team coming apart. there's a lot going on justt now. i think management need to pay serious attention to remaining competitive to the end of the season to steady things down. they could have swapped in for boeser but taking him out of the lineup with nothing to replace him would have been a big mistake for a team that already cannot score.
i've also about had it with the hockey management as a video game crowd who try to pretend there's no such thing as emotion in running a hockey team (or any business). if you are one of "the problem is too much empathy" crowd, then maybe follow the canes. there's self evidently a lot of emotion in the canucks dressing room as jt miller and ep40 have illustrated emphatically. management need to pay attention to it.

I think Brock Boeser is a great person and probably a great teammate too. I just don't think he's worth the contract he's asking for (that $8MM x 8 year talk wasn't just pulled out of thin air) and I'm fine with him leaving this summer if some other GM is willing to pay him.
I was also okay with trading him and trying to use the return as part of a package to bring in an impact player; but it wasn't to be, and i agree it made more sense at that point to keep him for the stretch run than trading him for a 2nd round pick.
Hopefully the team fights to the bitter end and whether they get into the playoffs or not is less important than what you discover about your players in the process.

Yeah, this management team cares so much about the "emotions" of their players that they've been public tearing strips of Boeser and Petey at every opportunity this season. They sent JT to bully Petey in the hopes that would "fix" him. They're so empathetic!

i just think the canucks should have tried to add at the deadline if they weren't going to sell. zetterlund, coyle and mittelstadt all would have been significant additions and all have term. luke kunin was picked up cheap and would have been a decent addition. i'm sure there were other players available like rakell and rust that might have been available if they'd been willing to pay

On the positive side, I think the defense is set for the next couple years. With the development of DPetey and Willander, there's a good chance it becomes the best unit in the league at some point. In Hughes' contract year, they could have 5 top 4 dmen on the team, with one of them being the best in the world. There's also some longevity attached to it given everyone's age, and that dmen typically stay at the apex of their game longer than forwards.
Given that, I'd hope the coaching staff starts to do more to activate the blueline on the rush. With Hronek & Hughes showing they can run their own pairs, you have one guy on each who has good offensive instincts if the team can find enough forwards with the skill to carry the puck into the zone instead of dumping it in every time.
They need an RW1 and C2 at minimum this off-season, with the idea that both can play off the rush and that the RW1 can be an excellent contributor to PP1. One of the first places I'd look at is if the Islanders are willing to part with Barzal after an injury riddled year, especially if Lou is fired/they decide to go full rebuild. C2 is a bit of a tougher challenge to acquire, and how good said player needs to be really depends on how well Chytil plays down the stretch.
