This is the wrong take - sorry. Exploring a Quinn Hughes trade in the off-season when he has TWO years left is asinine.

Quinn's value won't waiver in the next offseason (2026) when he has a year left because he'll be eligible to sign an extension with his new team. Any trade would come with an understanding of an agreed upon extension. Hughes will also be worth $13-15M in his new deal, the team trading for him will need to dump some good players back to offset salaries.

You'll still get a massive haul if you trade him at the deadline with the new team as long as there's an extension or an understanding of a signed extension.

Quinn Hughes might be the best player to don a Canuck jersey ever. The number one goal is to build a competitive team around him to convince him to sign.

The Canucks can't retool if they trade Hughes. It will automatically be a rebuild by default... that's how good he is. The number one focus is building a competitive team. If they can somehow make this a WCF team, then being captain, face of the franchise, making $15M a year at a 8 year deal might be too enticing to pass up.
Yes, trading now is a mistake.
At the 2026 draft of once it's known who has the top pick.
He will still have one year left on his contract so any team trading for him has a full season to re-sign him and give him 8 years if that is what Quinn wants.
It IS all about what Quinn wants, he has control.

His next contract will be after a 25+million increase of the cap so all teams except Vancouver will have the cap space to pay him his 18+ million, the Canucks would have to jettison a contract to have that space because of the OEL 4.75 mil buyout penalty.

Hughes is good but there have been other players that were good on this team.
There have been years here when the team had the Veznia quality goalie, two 100 point forwards, three forwards scoring 30+ goals and Quinn, that team didn't make the playoffs, twice.

The WCF team, where are those players coming from? There is only one year to achieve that and now all teams have more cap space available to sign their own FAs than the Canucks. 5.5 mill spent already for OEL and MIkheyev.

With the cap increases looking to keep exploding for a few years I think some of the top stars will go for shorter contracts with bigger numbers.

IMO the timing of a Hughes trade is vital, it isn't enough to just get 1rst round picks if those picks are in the 20's and it wold have to assume that any team he goes to will be higher in the standings so the pick becomes more chancy. They need to try to get the replacement star players and those only come through the draft.
IMO the greatest value return for Hughes is just before the last year of his contract kicks in especially if he has another Norris of close to it or another NHL recognized award. Just after the lottery is done but before the draft.
No trade protection so he can be dealt to any team.

Think of the Benning years, IF Virtanen had been the rumored Larkin, IF Juloevi was M. Tkachuk playing with the rest of the guys what would that team looked like? Much different that today in every aspect, no Pettersson and no Hughes but still a couple pretty good players.
For those few years the line up at forward could have been
Tkachuk - Horvat- ?
Larkin - Miller - Boeser

Pettersson's fall from grace will be harmful, either they try to keep him and maybe put the team in knot for another 7 years or just move him for a diminished return now but get the 11.6 mil to use for a FA if any will come here after the debacle Allvin has made of this city.

Something that should also be considered is Tocchet's system, it is for under skilled teams. Designed to not need star players, boards guys and not to lose hockey different that trying to win hockey. Play the odds, lose in OT and get a point so winning games becomes secondary to just hanging in there until OT.
The rumored 3 -2 - 1 points system being proposed will eliminate that strategy but his system might be good for younger players to play under if he lets them play to their strengths instead of his square pegs in round holes system. That is why I don't think he is the guy for new star level players, didn't work anywhere else he coached.

Guest on 650 this morning I think I heard saying hot rumour coming from Jimmy Aces (don’t know who that is tbh) is Boeser to Vegas. Whats Vegas got we’d need? Or would this be for assets Allvin flips?

Trading Lankinen makes zero sense. You’d get a second or a third, and you’d probably miss the playoff as a result.

Conversely, imagine if you had a very low likelihood of making the playoffs but could trade a second or third and have a 50-70% chance (or whatever chance you settle on) of making the playoffs. You’d do it no question.

No. If he makes it to UFA I would have been pursuing him either way.

I just see it as very unlikely he has Vancouver on his list of places he'd leave TOR for.
Most attractive reason to come to Vancouver would be playing with Quinn Hughes, I imagine. Such a duo would make some incredible plays on the ice.

I could see Vancouver prioritizing a player like that because they have demonstrated that they can perform in a Canadian media market like Vancouver.

But yes, in a world of Florida, Vegas, Nashville and other tax-free and sunnier locations—I still see Vancouver as an unlikely winner unless they make a huge offer.

Pretty much every team with the cap space would prioritize him. He is the best player on the market.

Idk if Quinn is much of a draw to him.

He likely would rather go to a real contender, better weather, lower taxes, and less media/fan scrutiny. VAN offers none of that.
