Don't think it will be his last chance at making money. He was also on a solid 2+ million a year contract with Nashville last year. Not like he's made peanuts up until now. He's going to be looking for a fit, somewhere he can play a lot of games. Not many teams are going to be looking for a #1. Most teams aren't going to want to pay him 5+ million for 30 games if he's not the #1.
He fits very well in Vancouver and has a real path to a #1 starter job with Demko's injury issues.
Not going to be able to slide into that perfect spot easily if he leaves for another team. Guessing he's very aware of that.
Open market I could see him getting 4.5+
If he stays here, I think he gets around 4. My guess would be a 4 year deal x 4 gets it done. Huge raise.

Any GM that would give Lankinen such a contract should be given an Uber ride to the airport.
Best case for Lankinen: he's lifted himself into Mrazek territory.
4 years takes him to 34. not many goalies go longer than that.
i should have rephrased it to his last big pay day, he most likely wont see anywhere close to the aav after this next contact
the ufa goalie group is also not strong. so that could help boost his aav, along with the cap increase

I don't see Lankinen as a 50+ games starter, I think he is best as a 40ish games 1A/1B tandem goalie. The market value for that should be around $4.5-5M (based on raising cap) and 3-4 years term. I would be ok (not thrilled) with that kind of contract. Anything more and we may have to explore other options. Our cap situation looks good now but will be tight next season if we extend Boeser or replace him with a good winger, so spending $10M on goalie isn't really ideal. But what choice do we have if we want to compete (and we should, for Hughes).

Lankinen is closer to a Charlie Lindgren than a Logan Thompson and will get paid as such. I still think we should and will pay him in the $4M range.
We’d be foolish to walk and “explore” UFA goalies like some of you are saying to save a couple bucks when we have a known commodity in Lank and with Demko looking like this. I am not going out and risking signing an Alex Lyon or dropping $6M++ on Adin Hill types.

Dhaliwal said Canucks offered term and reportedly over $3M per year to Lankinen but it was rejected. Apparently his agent is looking at Thompson, Blackwood and Daccord as comps ($5M to $5.85M). I'm not even sure Canucks would go to $4M per year let alone $5M per year so not sure there's a deal to be made here.

i don't think lankinen's ask is unreasonable but it's gonna be a very hard sell to pay him more than demko

Realistically, we can't.
Committing 4-5M to a tandem isn't an option when we still have so many holes to fill on this team. The only way that works is if we ship out Demko when he's worth no more than a 3rd or 4th right now, if even that. I don't blame Lankinen for chasing a big payday when he might never have another chance. Alas, if he does. It won't be from us unless we move Demko.
If you do, you're guaranteeing one of two things:
1. Demko is traded in the off season
2. Our current roster more or less stays the same, possibly with a Boeser downgrade
Basically, any hopes of replacing Boeser with Ehlers or upgrading our center depth dies with that type of a contract.

we worked lankinen over pretty good before we signed him. i don't blame him at all for doing the same.
he's in a pretty good spot though so he should not overplay his hand. playing as a tweener backup/starter behind an often injured starter on a good defensive team might be his best career situation. i don't think he's a starter. he does not give the team any swagger, and he has major holes in his game that can be broken down in detail in a playoff series.
i'd like to have a real medical handle on demko's situation and history though. i really don't know if we should be looking for a starter.

But it leaves the Canucks in a tough spot. I don't see how they can pay $5.5m to a guy who's still listed on the roster as a 'back-up'. So it's probable he leaves the same way Casey DeSmith did at the end of last season.
Time for Ian Clark to uncover another goaltending gem somewhere around the NHL. But it gets tougher every year.

I think we’re looking at least 4.5M+ for all of them which I’m not gonna like but oh well, no choice with Demko.
Vejmelka though I’d have no issues but I highly doubt Utah lets him walk. I think they probably re signs him. They’ve really got nothing after him in the pipeline.

really looking forward to the continuation of the regular season and the trade deadline, I think that management made some good moves moving away from Miller and get MP and DOC, I think they are gonna make a couple more moves and I'm eager to see where that gets us this year. I think we have a playoff team here and there is one really big big big decision to make, I wonder where they are at with him
