Surprised they kept Malkin in Pitts :sarcasm:
Tocchet was a minion there, picked up the socks after games
The money would be better allocated towards a player like Tanev who would be your number #1 defender in a last-minute defence.
He had a great year for him last season, played most of the games. But who replaces him and Soucy while they are hurt? Just asking for the "injuries" excuse AGAIN. Tanev will come in around 5.5 mil for a 37 yr old Dman.
I would like to round out our defense with Pierre-Olivier Joseph and one of Chris Tanev or John Marino.
What do the Canucks have to trade to get them?
Tanev and Guentzel are the targets now.
Fantasies I hope. 5+ mil for Tanev. You see there is inflation in salaries now that the cap is opened up. Salaries are not flat they look to the future cap limits
With Zadorov leaving, we are essentially firing Assistant GM Dan Milstein from the team. Cleared out Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, and Zadorov all in year. Hilarious
This might be becoming a concern and something to really look at, Klimovich and Podkolzin are likely next. But it might not be just the Russians. What if EP can't play Tocchet's way? He isn't Forsberg no matter that is EP's favourite player. EP isn't no Crosby, Stamkos or Draisatl. He plays more like Kucherov.
There are whispers that Vancouver might be willing to go seven years and $9 million a season for Guentzel, but that’s unconfirmed at this point. Obviously there would be a long list of suitors for Guentzel regardless if he goes to market.
Signing Guentzel or even offering him that much is a panic move IMO, desperation and an indication of a lack of forethought. A "Win now at any costs" with no regard of the future except a total rebuild in 4 years. Can't any other poster see what this team could look like in 4 or 5 years with these long term older players taking up this amount of cap hit and the total lack of young top six replacements? At best years of being stuck in the mushy middle hoping for lightning to strike and numerous GM's faltering at the draft.

If the did this then;
Guentzel - 9+ mil at age 34
Miller - 8 mil at age 35
Pettersson - 11+mil at age 31
Demko, if still able to play - est 6.5+ mil at age33
Boeser - est 8.5-9 mil at age 32
Hughes if still here - est 13+ mil at 29
Hronek - 7.25 mil at age 32

Some of these locked into another 2-4 years after.
When looking at their ages look at their birthdates, almost all have a birthday next season.

The limited 1rst rnd draft picks the next 3+ years, in the 14 to 24 range maybe.

The rest probably gone trying to prop up the mushy middle standings.

Other teams have aged stars, the Islanders, Washington, Pittsburgh and Tampa for instance even Carolina but most have young impact players on the roster moving up in play or are on the cusp of a total rebuild. But most have won the cup(s) and been finalists.

Does anyone really think the Oilers will be worse? Vegas stepping back, Avalanche not replacing Landeskog and Nichuskin and using that 17 mil for replacements on a team with only ONE 30 yr old player on it, most just entering their prime or in it already.
Los Angeles is just a goalie away from an added 10 points per year and Seattle, well not certain about them.

Defence stays steady, stopping pucks or players from winning board battles and keeping players away from the front of the net, putting players on their butts is much more consistent with a large group on the back end.

Now there MAY be another issue, will Euro's want to come here? Will Canadian want to come here to this hothouse of media pressure and play under a magnifying glass. The pressure of playing in a Canadian city that is losing or barely making it?

It isn't all doom and gloom yet but purging the team of the Ruskies might not go down good on some players. They might have just disenchanted an entire highly skilled group of players from wanting to come to play for bald guys

What a trade for Tampa. Moser should mostly replace Sergachev for a fraction of the cost, and they get a bunch of extra assets for making the swap.
