Something around Pettersson and Rantanen would be peak entertainment.
If we were to acquire Rantanen, I’d hope it to be play with Pettersson and unlock something there with both players. Chytil as defacto 1C would probably not be a good time. Not that it’ll happen but that’d be hilarious.

Yeah...I'd call bullshit on Byfield being available as well. It would make no sense whatsoever for LAK.
If they feel Byfield is going to hit a ceiling as a 50ish point winger and his power game will not develop...then I could see Blake possibly moving him while is value is super high. That said, there's really no one on our roster that would be of any interest to Blake.

I know I'm a big proponent in this kind of deal but they aren't going to keep trading players for futures then flipping those futures. Especially mid-season with the TDL only 10 days away.
more of an offseason type transaction, i agree.

You wanna know what my false hope has been?

It's been

EP + Soucy + 1st for Bedard and Seth Jones.

Man, the Hawks sure would be crazy to do THAT.

I've wanted them to take a swing at Bedard for months now. He's not lighting the world on fire, he's scoring at a decent rate but his play in his own end has been suspect. -70 in his young career. Bring him home to give the fans someone to rally around for a rebuild.

Jones sucks but he could be decent here.

His play in his own end can and will turn around! I'm confident in that.

I am less enthusiastic about rolling the dice on Jones now that we have Marcus Pettersson. Even at 7 million that's a lot of volatility.

Donny and Dhali were so butthurt about Pettersson's media comments.
while i think the situation is way more nuanced than they make it out to be (I'd be frustrated with this media market this season if I was Pettersson too), it's entirely appropriate for D&D to stick up for their industry and colleagues. Frustrated or not Pettersson's comments added nothing but fuel to the fire.

This morning I was trading Carson Soucy to Detroit.

I had already traded Garland to Boston. I don't know what happened against the Leafs but they had 6 forwards player over 20 minutes and 4 forwards play less than 10.

If they trade away Garland Van can comfortably extend Boeser 8x7.5

This is true. People keep talking about top 6 numbers blah blah blah. To me that means nothing when we're cap strapped, unless he's actually playing in the top 6. Otherwise that cap should be used in the top 6 as we can use Sherwood or someone cheaper in a checker role. Personally it's one or the other for me, or neither. We haven't done much with both in the line-up so far.

People are hesitant to deal Garland but remember he's also out of contract at the end of next season. Who knows how each side views his future with the club, so it might be prudent to get ahead of it.

My issue stems from roster construction. These come from crazy NHL.com that needs to work on who actually plays where at least a little.
RW
Boeser, Garland
LW
Debrusk, Sherwood, O'Connor, Hoglander
C
Pettersson, Chytil, Suter, Blueger, Joshua, Aman

IS the only improvement the Canucks plan to make an anemic offence Lekkerimaki next season? If they don't trade anyone away, where would cap space come for upgrades. If the plan is to upgrade with a player plus which probably includes something significant, that requires an assets they are already very slim on.

Just to add to my reasoning. Both Boeser and Garland are complimentary 2nd line RW's in my books. Continuing to keep trying to shoehorn the same player into different roles is just the wrong way to about constructing a roster in my view. Boeser is far better on the PP but Garland is the better all around energy guy and would be cheaper with shorter term.

Your last paragraph is so true. You simply can't keep every player you're attached to and change/upgrade the team at the same time.

Dallas Stars
  • Miro Heiskanen may be done for the rest of the regular season and miss the 1st round of the playoffs
  • Interested in Brock Nelson
  • Connected to Seth Jones but is too complicated of a move to make in-season; same goes for Erik Karlsson
  • May be willing to trade Mavrik Bourque
Atlanta
  • There is a proposed entertainment district, that includes an 18,000 seat rink for an NHL franchise, being discussed in Atlanta
  • Plans for this development are expected to be presented to the NHL soon
  • Two groups trying to bring a franchise back to Atlanta (for a 3rd time)
  • One of the two groups, Krause-led, is well ahead of the other, ASEG
Further Expansion
  • NHL met with a group looking to get an NHL franchise in New Orleans
  • Phoenix, Houston, San Diego, Cincinnati, Omaha, Kansas City, and other places have expressed interest in bringing in an NHL franchise
Winnipeg Jets
  • Could add a depth piece or two
  • Chatter that they are looking to do something bigger; may dangle Colby Barlow
Florida Panthers
  • Matthew Tkachuk is week-to-week but not expected to miss the playoffs
Boston Bruins
  • Mentions Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau as two players to watch
  • Extension talks have halted on Frederic and Brazeau
  • Mutliple teams interested in both players
Europe
  • NHL will play games in Stockholm, Sweden next season in November
  • Unclear if 2 or 4 teams will participate
John Gibson
  • Would not block a trade to the Edmonton Oilers
NHL Draft
  • Will take place in Los Angeles and be de-cenralized
  • Already talk that a centralized draft could return
  • Everyone would return to Montreal for a centralized draft
Brock Boeser
  • Can’t see a trade betwee the Kings & Canucks but thinks the Kings would love to acquire Boeser
  • Kings may pursue him as a free agent
Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Want to add a second-liner; preferably a centre
  • Looking for physical bottom-6 forwards with size
Montreal Canadiens
  • Taking trade cards Jake Evans, Joel Armia, and David Savard
  • Christian Dvorak is available but his cap hit may prevent a move
  • Canadiens only have one retention slot remaining

Expanding anymore would be a terrible idea for the game.. 32 teams is enough, it already seems like the talent pool is seriously diluted

I'm not fully against expansion, although I don't think it's good to have it this rapid, but the cities being chosen really need to be carefully considered. Going back to Atlanta after two difference franchises failed (and got moved to Canada) and Phoenix seems completely nonsensical.

The only thing on defence I think we need next year is like a right handed Forbort. Someone that is cheap a 5/6, that can play on the right side and pk. Just as an insurance policy or insulation for Mancini and Willander.

You'd have to think management would have those conversations with his agent, at the very least this off-season...if they feel the need to move on from both Demko and EP, you'd have to think they are reaching complete tear down mode and Hughes will likely prefer to use his years productively and the team would likely try to extract as much value as possible rather than lose him for nothing. If you can retain on his salary for his final 2 years you can probably get a very tidy haul. Obviously this isn't a desired outcome, but its a possible one.
I get a chuckle every time I see comments like “we can’t trade Petey/Garland because they’re friends with Hughes.”

Agents run the show. That’s why players give them a portion of their contract.

Who do you think made Petey say “I want to play for a winner?” That’s the code for “up the money because you’re not a winner right now.”

Agents tell their players to sound neutral if not cold until the team gets to a certain amount. Once the player signs the fat contract that’s when it’s suddenly “I’m glad I’m able to continue playing for the city I love, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

There is zero chance of Bedard getting traded. He's producing offence at a very good rate for a 19YO on a very weak team.

This is where I'm at. Like, I can't argue with the expansion into Vegas and Seattle, those have both gone really well. And Salt Lake City was clearly ready for a team, too.

I could see an argument for places Houston or Portland. But I'm with you, going back to markets where it's been tried and failed multiple times seems like the definition of insanity.
