GARLAND FOR BYFIELD!!!!!!!
i-volunteer.png

That's so nice of Garland

Rantanen will be getting paid 14 million from ages 33-37.

As a win now for Carolina sure... for us idk better start thinking about the possibility of being able to unload contracts and players

I have zero interest in a deadline deal for Rantanen

As a UFA I guess we could look at a couple ways. Sign Rantanen get Pettersson a winger
Instead of Boeser ages 32-35 you have a better player and you also get someone to deflect away from the 11.6 deal

This is like the Marian Hossa situation all over again. You are probably signing Rantanen to be an top line winger, but he may not be the electric 100+ point game-breaking forward without a guy like MacK beside him.

I would take Rantanen knowing he could dramatically turn this franchise around the next 3-4 years but the backside of the deal is a legitimate franchise killing contract. Odds are we would probably be rebuilding anyway.

regarding Carolina Tuch and VAN 2nd, Vancouver Rantanen and Cozens, Buffalo Pettersson:

I’d do that if Rantanen plays as a Center here similar to JT Miller coming here and playing center. Rantanen is/was a natural C and has played center a bunch in Colorado.

Could do a sort of hybrid setup with Chytil or Suter on his line.

Recap of Frank Seravalli's interview with Halford & Brough.

Boeser
  • Towards the top of the Canucks “to do” list
  • Thinks there’s a likelihood, or a possibility, that he gets re-signed
  • Can see him being held on to past the TDL and then re-signs
  • Total comfort level between the two sides during this process
  • Boeser knows he’ll get paid by someone
  • He feels a strong connection to Vancouver that is pulling him to re-sign
  • Wouldn’t view his situation in any form of absolutes
  • Hasn’t been a tonne of progress on contract talks but is already making 6.65m; term will be a big part of it; from an AAV perspective, don’t have to stretch to give him a raise
  • Wouldn’t be surprised if he got just under 9m AAV
Detroit Red Wings
  • Desperately need a defensive upgrade
  • Not in dire need for a centre
  • Have flexibility, cap space, assets, and draft picks
  • There’s pressure to make the playoffs; need to give the young players a taste of the playoffs
  • Put them in the buyer category
Boston Bruins
  • Don Sweeney’s comments over the weekend raised some eyebrows (Sweeney said that the team’s playoff uncertainty made it possible that they sell off rather than buy)
  • Might not see as drastic a sell-off as some expect
  • Will trade Trent Frederic since not close on a contract extension
  • Expects them to trade Justin Brazeau
  • Wonders if they move a defenceman with term
  • Wouldn’t call a trade of Brad Marchand likely but not impossible
Edmonton Oilers
  • Impossible for them to fix their goaltending situation in-season
  • Evander Kane looms over them and may decide to return to the line-up; meaning they won’t have his LTIR space available for acquisitions; Oilers don’t feel comfortable with the situation and hope to get clarity from Kane’s doctors around March 1st
  • Can’t tell a player who’s been cleared that they can’t return
Carolina Hurricanes
  • Haven’t been rejected by Mikko Rantanen but he’s non-committal; their first priority is to re-sign him
  • Only have themselves to blame for not re-signing Jake Guentzel; waited too long to make a serious offer
  • Have put an 8y/100m plus deal on the table for Rantanen
NHLPA
  • Injuries at the 4 Nations tournament are not an issue
  • Marty Walsh, NHLPA’s executive director, credits his strong relationship with the NHL to communication
  • Have essentially started CBA negotiations even though it doesn’t expire until after 2026
Seth Jones
  • Blackhawks are willing to retain 2-2.5m
  • Jones has to provide a list of teams and can’t just name only Dallas
  • Stars haven’t shown much interest and are prioritizing paying their young players
  • Doesn’t think there’s much interest in him around the league
  • Calls him a solid #2 defencemen then references that some Canucks fan is making a Marcus Pettersson joke right now
Jordan Binnington
  • Not sure of which teams would be interested
  • Hurricanes don’t want to spend on a goalie and don’t see them doing it on a goalie with marginal season results

I have a hard time believing that Conor Garland is the keystone to re-signing Quinn Hughes.

The vast likelihood is that Garland walks to go back to a US team next year when his contact is up anyways.

@wonton15 I really have a hard time with these friendship signings. Athletes realize they can't sacrifice on anything to get to the top. Determination, commitment, perseverance, training, ect., all have to be done at near 100%. You certainly can't have an anchor on your leg stipulating that you have to carry your friends around at this level.

Professional athletes can't be concerned with petty things like trying to ensure their friends are as capable hockey players as they are. The GM makes the decisions and the GM can't make $5 million dollar feel good signings so they can play professional hockey with their friends. It's an absurd notion. Anyone that thinks like that isn't making it to the highest levels of hockey.

His salary and position certainly need to be evaluated on his contribution to the on-ice team, not friendship points.

I can understand the sense of 'apathy' building in the Canuck fan-base. They're coming to the inevitable conclusion that without Quinn Hughes, this team is in lottery-land, pure and simple. And even with him, it would be a 'life and death' struggle right to the very end.

Unfortunately this is hockey. Most teams face seasons like this. Last season went to a lot of fans heads and now your expectations are completely out of whack. There are 11-12 out of 32 teams that are in a comfortable playoff spot.

why is Brock not worth a tonne?

Brock isn't worth a tonne because he's a ufa who wants a big lengthy retirement contract. He's been inconsistent from year to year in addition to being one dimensional. He also looks lost without Miller.

It's a safe bet that no player is annoyed by Petey's point totals while playing with tendinitis and only being surpassed by Hughes

If they are annoyed at Petey, it is because he kicks puppies and spits on kittens

Patrick Johnston's whining would be annoying, except that the concerted character assassination is so toxic, I know we all love it as much as I do

Imagine how unhappy I was before the advent of social media

What an asshat. I can't believe we're at the point of attacking player's personalities now. Social media is garbage. Maybe some players support their teammates.

But man ... I love the toxicity. :yo:

i think that only applies where there is retention.

Is this true? I always thought this was a rule across the board to prevent TDL tampering. Otherwise a non playoff team could effectively trade a player as a rental to a playoff team and just trade back for them in the summer.

I'd be blowing up too if I played for this franchise.

I'm just a fan, there's much I can't control. It's on God now.

I really love the idea of the Schenn bros coming here - both of them. So logically, the most hilarious Canuck thing we can do is rent Brad Marchand. But I kind of want to do it.

Guys want to win. They push teammates. They get pissed off when guys are hurting the club’s chances. Imo there are definitely guys in the room pissed at Pettersson.
If they are pissed maybe their lines should also have tried scoring a goal in Vegas or Utah. I don't even mean them score personally. Their line.

Like there's one team mate who actually matters besides Pettersson and he's been out of the line up since the end of January.

This morning I was trading Carson Soucy to Detroit.

I had already traded Garland to Boston. I don't know what happened against the Leafs but they had 6 forwards player over 20 minutes and 4 forwards play less than 10.

If they trade away Garland Van can comfortably extend Boeser 8x7.5

I'm not particularly in favour of the idea, as he's usually one of our hardest working players, but I've wondered if the Canucks might move Garland as part of a package in pursuit of an upgrade.

My issue stems from roster construction. These come from crazy NHL.com that needs to work on who actually plays where at least a little.
RW
Boeser, Garland
LW
Debrusk, Sherwood, O'Connor, Hoglander
C
Pettersson, Chytil, Suter, Blueger, Joshua, Aman

IS the only improvement the Canucks plan to make an anemic offence Lekkerimaki next season? If they don't trade anyone away, where would cap space come for upgrades. If the plan is to upgrade with a player plus which probably includes something significant, that requires an assets they are already very slim on.

They should absolutely move Boeser if they can land a 1st and a legit prospect.
not getting a legit prospect for a rental. legit prospects don't get traded in the cap era unless a super star is going the other way. probably be a 1st and C prospect at best, most likely just a 1st.

Granlund got a 1st + conditional 3rd.

So I would expect Boeser to get a 1st+.

They’re gonna trade the 1st for a 20 something player. Have to look for prospects or young players who have no ability to make the team they’re currently on because of depth

That’s why I suggest Brock to EDM for O’Reilly

In pursuit of an upgrade, I'll trade anyone. Trading Garland to extend Boeser makes the team worse.
one would hope a garland trade is simply to get the futures to make that upgrade rather than purely about being Boeser.

I know I'm a big proponent in this kind of deal but they aren't going to keep trading players for futures then flipping those futures. Especially mid-season with the TDL only 10 days away.
