Recap of Frank Seravalli's interview with Canucks Central.

Elias Pettersson, Forward
  • Completely up to the Canucks in terms of how they play this out moving forward
  • Amazes that this “continues to be someone else’s problem”; during locker clean out day it was knee tendonitis, then to start the season itwas J.T. Miller, after Miller it was about the talent around him and his deployment, after not seeing him playing better at the 4 Nations, despite his Swedish teammates promising he’ll be better, it’s now the media’s fault; questions when Pettersson will take accountability for his own game (later acknowledges that Pettersson has said the right thing at times)
  • Is a highly paid player that has failed since signing his contract
  • Not one team could acquire him and feel 100% good about it; even if they aren’t giving up much to get him or are the biggest believer on the planet; would have to be some trepidation and fear
  • No doubt that teams are calling and inquiring about him; is sure teams are calling to find out if they can acquire him for nothing
  • Had a conversation about a Huberdeau for Pettersson swap and questioned the incentive for Vancouver
  • Maybe part of the risk is having him at his full contract and then not being able to trade him due to his NMC
Boeser
  • Neither the Canucks nor Boeser knows how this will end
  • Wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually re-signs
  • Has been a game of chicken the whole time
  • Canucks have dared Boeser to have a similar season to last year
  • On track for 28 goals which is still enough to get a raise
  • Canucks wanted to see more consistent production from him
  • Boeser is comfortable letting this play out and know he will get well-paid regardless of where he plays
  • Boeser wants to stay in Vancouver and be part of the solution
  • Understands the Canucks’ questions about how Boeser will age
  • Thinks Boeser is a type of player that should be on a shorter-term deal; keep him hungry and chasing the next contract
  • Says teams that struggle are filled with players that are “super comfortable” on long-term contracts
  • If Boeser is seeking term, he’s going to get it from some; even if he takes a slightly less AAV
  • Can see Boeser taking something around 3y/8m range
TDL Lead-Up
  • This it will be pretty busy because the top end teams haven’t really made any big moves
  • Rentals haven't been traded yet
  • Has 40 names on his trade board and there’s a good chance 25 of them could get traded
Tocchet
  • Would love to know how Tocchet feels about everything
  • 20 to 25 teams in the league would fire their coach to hire him
  • Shah gets the sense that they will have extension discussions with Tocchet before the season ends
  • Seravalli doesn’t think there’s been much contract talks between Tocchet and the organization
  • Has just kept his head down and coached
Demko
  • Current injury isn’t related to the previous one
  • Big question is if there’s a chance Demko can regain his form; if there is, he’d bet on Demko every time
  • Lankinen signing has increased the likelihood that Demko will be traded before his contract is up
  • No idea about his trade value without knowing more about his health
  • Thinks a trade would be in the summer
Soucy
  • Holds the cards due to his full NTC
  • Thinks he’s a guy worth taking a risk on and likes the cost certainty
  • Part of this is up to him
  • Some teams have called and asked the Canucks to retain but they’ve turned them down; if the Canucks are trading him, they won’t retain
Mikko Rantanen
  • Have made an offer that the Hurricanes feel is strong; at the very least is starting point
  • Rantanen hasn’t turned the Hurricanes down but is non-committalbecause he’s been in Carolina for such a short period of time
  • Wild card is owner Tom Dundon and if he is willing to extend Rantanen to a huge contract since Rantanen hasn’t produced yet
  • Not likely he gets traded but not improbable

I have a really hard time listening to anything Frank has to say these days without thinking about the weird biases he has and how it's led him to have some terrible takes and cringe worthy interviews.

Amazes that this “continues to be someone else’s problem”; during locker clean out day it was knee tendonitis, then to start the season itwas J.T.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Pettersson has never said anything about any of that with the exception of the knee tendonitis. Pettersson never blamed the media for his play, he's just open about his distain for them and the interaction he has to do.

He's never complained about linemates or deployment, Tocchet confirmed as much. He's never complained publicly but Miller. He has taken accountability publicly though, probably not as much as some might like.

Frank is taking a lot of rumors, hearsay, etc and treating it like absolute truth. Maybe he's got sources and an inside track but he really comes off as an below average hf poster.

Like people taking a comment from Brough this morning about how He doesn't think Pettersson has a relationship with the twins and that snowballed into EP disrespecting the two canuck greats and pissing all over their legacy. When there's plenty of evidence of him working with the twins.

Also a Huberdeau for Pettersson trade is so trash.

Sounds like he's talking about Ottawa and Buffalo? Lots of young players signed for 8 years on value that we gush about, yet haven't accomplished anything across multiple coaches. Maybe NJ too with Meier.

Can see Boeser taking something around 3y/8m range
That seems like a no brainer given the Hughes contract and the long term uncertainty of the team's window. But very risky on Brock's part; the cap's going up but he could bounce around like Toffoli for the rest of his career.

Tocchet

If anyone on the team needs to see a sports psychologist it might be Tocchet after all the drama. Was a Jack Adams winner with a lights out team less than a year ago and now his players don't want to shoot the puck.

Big question is if there’s a chance Demko can regain his form; if there is, he’d bet on Demko every time
Not sure if Demko is the only Canuck Frank likes (goes back to the NHL exec rumour on Demko's hips) or he just hates anybody named Pettersson.

I really can't figure out why just about everyone refuses to shoot. Are they playing the way Tocchet wants them too or they doing the complete opposite because they hate him that much. Lol.

This is just evidence of the Sedins doing their jobs as development coaches, or whatever their official title is. "no relationship with the Sedins" means that outside of professional interactions, there's nothing there.

Of course, a player doesn't have to (and usually won't) be close with their coaches. This is just quite strange given how high profile both the Sedins and Pettersson are, and how similar both are in terms of nationalities and importance to the team. It's like if we found out Sidney Crosby didn't have a relationship with Mario Lemieux.

They could come from Kazakhstan and I couldn't give a shit if they're great at hockey.
4 nations final, cup rings were 19-3 for Canada. I think having 3 Canadians on the team probably isn't helping the Canucks. They need better Canadians.

yeah, no chance he klingbergs himself.

he is probably fine with 5-7 years but management wants 3-4 at most.
Sat mentioned today he believes Canucks have only gone 4/5 years but wonders if they’ll go 6/7. Would have to guess if they do and boeser is reasonable about AAV it could get done.

All the other insiders seemed to be thinking could go either way.

well then i expect a Boeser extension now. of course the Canucks don't leave their best offer until later.

kind of a weird thing for brough to say. virtanen had a relationship with the twins, trained off season with them, amounted to eff all.

what does virtanen have to do with this? the sedins probably do similar things with tons of players.

the fact that our superstar swedish centre has zero inkling of a personal relationship with our former superstar swedish players is quite weird.

Pettersson is going to be forced to do the grouse grind with the Sedins this offseason and blow both of his knees.

Brough is just throwing fuel to the fire regarding Pettersson because he’s run through every other theory and they need to fill air time. Last week it’s the yips, now the relationship with the Sedins.

I’d keep Pettersson, ‘retool’ him in the offseason with a babysitter/trainer/psychologist.

it's not weird at all that a 20-something year old doesn't have personal relationships with a pair of 44 year old dads just because they're from the same country.

like, are you friends with all your older co-workers? i didn't when i was in my mid-20s. they had families, i couldn't relate to them at all. i had my own life.

where did i say they needed to be friends? mentorship falls under a personal relationship, and i have definitely asked older colleagues for advice on things.

same question - why is it weird if a 20-something doesn't care to have a personal relationship with a pair of 40 year old dads just because they're the same country? when you were younger did you have a personal relationship after hours with your older colleagues?

it's actually kind of unusual, actually!

edit: am somewhat reminded of when Nicklas Jensen looked like he wanted to jump off a cliff the 51st time he was asked about if he knew fellow Dane Jannik Hansen.
