Here’s my spreadsheet for upcoming UFAs, each team’s cap situation, and a trade tracker. I update the spreadsheet daily. I use CapFriendly to create this list and AFP Analytics for the contract projections.

Edit: Spreadsheet has been updated with AFP's latest projections and I added a new section for RFAs.

I don't think this is a good comparison. I've always heard Strome described as soft and he only had 12 hits all last season. By comparison. Miller had 200 last season and has always had a good amount of hits and hits taken. Strome has never had more than 23 in a season and doesn't exactly take a lot either.

My impression of him in Chicago was always a bit one-dimensional, and I haven't seen much of him in Washington this past season. I don't know that he can be a matchup guy. With that said, I'm open to the idea given how sad our offensive creativity was with EP40 injured/depressed/whatever.

guess it doesn't have to be as a stylistic comparison - although strome is a big dude at 6'3, but about 20 lbs lighter than jt and the hit total comments are fair...but i do recall @MS being high on him in his early days as someone who could be that dominant power forward if he put it together, which he hasn't.

the better aspect of the miller comparison is probably the team control for a guy who maybe has untapped potential. getting jt at $5.25m for 4 years was massive. strome doesn't need to ever hit 99 points to offer real value at $5m, especially under a higher cap.

looking at just his offensive totals - strome seems to have taken a step in washington from a guy struggling to break 50 points due to health/gp issues to a mid-60s producer the last two consecutive full seasons. 45 ES points this year, which is exactly what miller did in his first year in van (but jt was a year younger).

i am fully basing this off of watching like, 2 caps games, so happy to concede being wrong to anyone who has watched him closely. but we also don't really need him to be a matchup center with jt 1.0 more than capable and blueger or someone replacing him as the primary pk center.

The bolded is where I am at. I love the idea of the trade; acquire a cost-controlled player. I don't really know anything about him other than he's a fairly soft skill player. Others who have watched way more of him should be able to comment on whether he'd fit into Tocchet's system. That's my main concern. We saw it happen with Kuzmenko last season.

I liked Strome to be a top-6 C back in his Arizona days when everyone was calling him a bust but that doesn't necessarily mean I would love him as an acquisition now.

He's not really a 'power forward'. Very soft, pretty slow. We don't really need a top-6 C and I don't think he really brings what we'd want as a 3rd C option.

i just think people who think the canucks MUST sign zadorov or lindholm or tanev or whatever are probably going to be disappointed
No doubt, I would be disappointed if they traded the most impactful defenceman under 30 yrs old.
i still like vinny desharnais as a third pairing option. the series changed when they got nurse away from ceci and with desharnais. him with dillon would be a mean, big third pairing.

my interpretation of that "ruthless" comment is that blueger, myers and zadorov are gone. i think all three can get much more than they can get here, both in terms of role and dollar amount from other teams.
They don't need to be that ruthless. Most of that talk is these "shows" making stories. Maybe a little brown nosing up to the team to help negotiations.
Cap Space: The Canucks have about $27 million to play with, assuming they get long term injury relief on Poolman again next season.
Almost certainly IF Boeser does have clotting issues will be him put on LTIR, maybe until January. That is an additional 6.65 mil available for use for awhile any way, by January the team would not need the full 6.65 in cap space, more likely half that.

Fans in this market have witnessed so many bad contracts that have such long lasting impacts they have forgotten that the cap will have movement now.

Estimated or at least speculated increase are 5 million a year with maybe a couple of additional million here of there.

The other thing is also proper evaluation by position. Dmen don't get huge point totals. Those on the PP do put up a lot of points but those not getting very much PP time don't. But stopping one goal per game is just as important. Winning battles in the Dzone alone can contribute to more goals just because the other team can't win the puck back easily.

Lots of who to sign, even from sports shows. How is it possible to compare Zadorov to Lindholm? It's two different positions with different roles to play. Zadorov's first role is stopping the puck and getting it back in his own zone. This was a big issue when the Canucks had the smallest defence in the league, most of Benning's time here.

Why can't the team keep the key players of the playoffs and still improve?
The team spent just under 30 mil on defence last year, why do they have to spend too much more if more at all and keep most of this group together? I am pretty sure most fans were quite happy with the defence.

Sports shows are leading fans about how to think about these issues.

The spent 29.325 mil on all the defence or close to it. They could even keep Hronek if they added a mil to the total.
Hronek - 7.5
Zadorov - 6.25
Myers - 3.5
Soucy - 3.25
Hughes - 7.85
Juulsen - .775

Losing Cole might cause some pain but there is the entire current defence and for less than last year by 200K, 29.125 mil.

Forwards, they spent pretty much the rest.
What do they need to keep the same guys? Or improve.
Projected now with all but Blueger, Lafferty, Joshua and Lindholm not signed yet, 41.25 mil for forwards.
Well Boeser might come off the cap so subtract his hit of 6.65 taking what has been committed down to 34.6 mil.

That's EP, JTM, Mik, Gar, Hog, Pod, Suter, Aman, PDG all signed and sealed.
Now Mikheyev might be able to be moved with a little retention or sweetening with late picks.

So the team would have 27.2 mil to sign Joshua, Lindholm is that is what they want to do, Blueger and Lafferty that may cost 14 mil. OEL gets a raise so add another 2.35 mil. They will have around 10 mil for improvement..

This keeps pretty much the status quo, not good enough.

Who did I miss? I know I added Pod to the lineup so that might skew the amount cap space left.

Addition by subtraction and BB's situation as far as cap space.

Media shows are getting fans to say what they want them to say. There is no comparison of Zadorov to Lindholm on so many levels. Lindholm is 30 next year, on the downside but wanting a long term deal. Zadorov hitting his prime and wanting less. Not even close.

The playoffs could be used as a filter for those players to keep.

How much is 7 million compared to 110 million? Too much? Next year the cap goes up to an estimated 87.5 but with the Canadian team playing in the real season and the money for the new franchise that might go up into the 90's.

When doing contract don't make Benning's mistake and forget about the future. When he made a mistake with contracts it lasted for years, now JTMiller's 8 million won't look very bad after next year, it might even be considered quite a bargain.

Just trying to point out that what is being bantered around by sports shows is just creating unnecessary comparisons.

That is why I keep saying up to 7mil for 7 years for Zadorov will be a bargain in 4 years and he will still be in his prime and 7mil will be like 4 million now.

Media shows are making a huge issue of RHD. True they are rarer but not all winning teams have an equal mix.

Listen to the show on now, creating or saying fan anxiety over the cap.

They want a 30 yr old Guentzal at 9 million for 7 years, they really think fans haven't learned. Why aren't they saying Stamkos instead, he's old. He can't get 9 million from Tampa. Ludicrious

wouldn't be surprised if they did something like flip Garland for picks and then use those picks to get someone to take Mikheyev. Gives them a lot of bucks on a good UFA market this summer.

i am -- no joke -- absolutely shocked at how okay i am with the canucks bringing back myers for another 2-3 years

how did it come to this
Tyler Myers was built for the playoffs

They won't call his crosschecks, and if they do, there will be a makeup call right after.

Team is good enough to make playoffs, so his regular season shenanigans can be absorbed.

What? I don’t see this team flipping Garland for anything.

But—I see your point about farming assets to flip Mikheyev. I wonder if Hoglander is who they would expend. Especially if they intend upgrading the top-six with a premium goal-scorer.

Garland is a middle-six winger making almost $5M. He wouldn't fetch much of anything on the trade market.

This would be incredible ruthless given the recent circumstances, but moving Boeser this offseason would’ve been something I think management would’ve possibly considered prior to his recent health scare. Doing so now is probably not something I think they would even consider given his popularity with his teammates. He’s just a guy I question whether management views as a longterm fit but maybe you can re-sign him to a hometown discount that both sides are happy with?

I can't believe people are still on the trade Boeser train. Like who are you upgrading to at that dollar value. He's our only actual top 6 winger at this point unless you include Garland or play Petey on the wing. So if you get rid of him you need 2 or 3 top six wingers to come in and who is going to provide better value on a similar contract that is available.

trading boeser is some galaxy brain garbage. if he can score 25+ and be an effective duo with miller again next year he's worth more than the 6.65m he'll make. no way are you finding anything better to do with that cap space than just hold onto boeser

if things go way south and the team is out of it at the deadline they can sell then with 50% retention and get some premium assets

whether to resign him and at what term/aav gets interesting. i think boeser is a player who rides the line between being effective and being a liability and when he falls off it'll be a steep decline but there's probably some scenarios where it makes sense to extend him

I have a weird feeling they keep him and hope he bounces back. His shooting % was half it was the last two seasons (7% to 14%). His speed was looking good at the end but he had no confidence. I wonder if they get Guentzel if they run (Mikheyev-Petey-Guentzel) since that line with Kuzy had success.

It will completely depend on what avenues are available to them. If it's the difference between a player they want and not, they will punt Mikheyev out the door post haste.

Up front

---1--- MILLER BOESER
PETTERSSON ---2--- ---3---
---4--- ---5--- GARLAND
DEGUISEPPE ---6--- ---7---

1 = SUTER - would be nice to upgrade but only so much cap to go around. Probably look to young players like (Bains Podkolzin which is wishful thinking) rather than a expensive FA. Have thought about Heinen Amadio Zucker or Arvidsson as an option if cheap

2 = LINDHOLM - Reinhart Guentzel DeBrusk Toffoli DuClair need a quality player for EP40 *THIS ONE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

3 = MIKHAYEV - Should be bought out. Just cant see how you hope he rebounds and HOGLANDER makes for an easy replacement that is cheap and Lekkerimaki is on his way hopefully.

4 = JOSHUA - Texier Grundstrom Podkolzin......Mikhayev if they decide to bring him back..yuch. Max Jones is a guy on my radar if they could get him from Anaheim. Big fast cheaper

5 = BLUEGER - Hayton Wennberg Lundestrom Glass Raty

6-7 = Internal replacements Raty Podkolzin Amen Sasson cheap UFAs

Anthony Richard BOS. C/LW is a guy that can fly who has some Trevor Moore in his game
Comtois Katchouk Duhaime Trenin Lorentz
R.Lavoie M Jones if they aren't qualified are all of various degree of interest for me

The good thing is that there’s literally no way this will be the same team as last season. They have a bunch of cap space and roster spots to figure it out.

I’m not married to breaking the bank to keep the team together when it’s clear this team needs more offensive/forechecking punch.

The team not only needs another puck retriever or two, they could also use another good ES scorer as well as a puck-mover for at least one of the other defense pairings. Then you filter the general characteristics they are looking for - size on the backend and size / speed up front and you can start to explore options.

I could see Hronek being moved and the team walking away from all of Lindholm, Zadorov and Joshua as their asks will be too high. A guy like Greenway, who they reportedly have been interested in, would be an okayish Joshua replacement. Another guy they've liked is Vatrano, and I still think a Hronek for Vatrano + deal could be interesting. Sign Dillon instead of Zadorov.

LW (puck retriever) - Miller - Boeser
Suter - Petterson - Vatrano
Greenway - Blueger - Garland
Aman - Raty - Podkolzin

Hughes - Tanev / DeMelo
Soucy - Myers
Dillon - RD (PMD)

Defense

HUGHES ---1---
SOUCY ---2---
---3--- ---4---
---5--- JUULSEN/McWARD

1 = HRONEK - Best option is that they find common ground closer to the 6.5 they want to pay. Given his 2nd half Hronek has to give some concessions. I think they get it done. Pesce Roy Carrier DeMelo
* - Have thought about Byram in Buffalo as a target. Something will have to give there and in Ottawa with Chychrun 3 expensive LDs and they would probably prefer balance but then were scrambling on the right side unless Roy Carrier DeMelo Pesce could hold the fort and a young Willander is good.

2 = MYERS - I think they can get this done. If not Tanev Roy DeMelo Pesce

3 = ZADOROV - Likely prices himself out which is why he was so cheap. Dillon Edmundson Forbort Kulikov. Where there is smoke

4 = COLE - Possible they bring him back. Hakanpaa Desharnais

5 = FRIEDMAN - Jake Bean is a guy i'm interested in giving a shot. I cannot see Columbus qualifying him.

have you added up all the contract projections for this summers crop of free agents and compared it to aggregate available cap space?

No but it's easy to do so.

My numbers show a total of 630.63m in available capspace. On my list there's a total of 351.76m in projections for UFAs and 260.49m in projections for RFAs for a total of 612.25m.
