Best Trade Chips: Janick Hansen(Please no!), Alexander Edler, Ryan Miller, Jake Virtanen, Erik Gudbranson, Brandon Sutter, Derek Dorsett, Luca Sbisa

Benning bad Idea Trade Chips: Chris Tanev (By far the best value), Ben Hutton.

Quick Summary: The Canucks have some a few mid range pieces to trade, but there 3 most valuable trade pieces are Chris Tanev (Who IMO should NOT be traded for any reason what so ever)
Janick Hansen who has been once again one of our best players this year, and pretty much every year. (IMO The most consistent 3rd Liner in the NHL)
And Ben Hutton who is having a 2nd year sophomore slump, but is a hell of a transition skater.

The Canucks are going to be forced into a rebuild soon, so let's see what kind of values people throw out here for these players.

IMO:
Tanev = 1st Rounder(mid range) + / Or a High end prospect
Janick Hansen = 2nd + 3rd Rounder (Just short of a 1st, but in a weak draft it's possible at the deadline)
Ben Hutton = Similar prospect in a forward Position.
Alex Edler = No clue
Jake Virtanen = Similar prospect who is having a bad start transitioning to the NHL
Ryan Miller = mid round Pick

Maatta for Tanev? The Canucks get a younger D that fits in the age group of their future core with Horvat, Boeser, Demko and Hutton. The Pens get a more win now defenseman to shore up their 2nd pair for long term. Maatta would do better in the West than in the East (he constantly plays well against Western teams), while Tanev would really thrive in a #3 role in Pittsburgh with either Daley or Dumoulin. Tanev only makes like $400k more per season than Maatta does, so the salary swap is pretty minimal.

btw the Canucks without tanev look hilariously dreadful, At least with him they look somewhat respectable in the scoreline.

Petry for Maata and a 2nd?

I Like matta, but Tanev has more value than that, way more actually imo.

Tanev is a top pairing d-man with limited offensive capabilities but elite shutdown skills, similar to Vlasic. Tanev right now is basically Hamhuis in his prime.

Doesn't work salary wise and I wouldn't add on top of Maatta for Petry.

Yeah, Tanev is basically Brian Dumoulin but smaller. I think that's fair. Still, Maatta has played like a top pair defenseman in the past and has been a consistent top-4 D whenever he has played against the West (including in the cup finals last year). I don't think it's that far off, Tanev is better now but Maatta has the offensive potential that Tanev simply doesn't have. Maatta's issue is his skating, I think that's pretty well documented at this point. He doesn't fit in well with the Penguins system due to that.

I think you're low on your ask for Tanev. In a pure futures scenario, I think he gets a mid range 1st+a bluechip prospect (or near bluechip, someone in the 20-40 range of prospect rankings) as a minimum

It would be hard to trade Tanev, but the right move. Edler won't waive. Gudbranson is roughly where tanev was at the same age. Tanev also will start his decline when we are ready to compete again. I see tanev declining around 30-31 and the Canucks being 3-4 years from being competitive. tanev has great value now and can get us that piece we will need to compete for the cup when we are ready again.

Maatta > Tanev

Maatta isn't better than Tanev. He could potentially be better than Tanev, but he's definitely not better right now. Maatta's potential ceiling is an upper tier #2, I think Tanev right now is more of a complementary #2 or an upper tier #3. Maatta right now is probably a middle pair D, he's too inconsistent to get an accurate read on him right now.

Good lord. I wouldn't even trade Beaulieu straight up for Edler.

With his declining offensive numbers and 2 more years left at 5 M per and a NTC, the Canucks aren't going to get much for Edler unless they retain significant $.

You are probably looking at a 2nd rounder + B or C prospect if a team has to take on the full Edler contract right now.
