Benning has an option year. Canucks could just have exercised their option. Would make the most sense to do to squash rumours for this season.

Majority of GMs and coaches never enter the final year of their deal. Either get extended or terminated. Rare exceptions are teams that have expectations and have given the person 2-3 prior attempts to get it down ala trotz in Washington for example.
