It is terrible but he's never really been worked with. He's not the only canuck that has brutal defensive coverage.

Personally I think he's a winger and likely a call up when an offensive player goes down.

Forcing a player to do a role they are not meant to or capable of is doing that player dirty. Its failing to put them into a position to succeed. Which is what happened to Gaudette. I doubt he lasts in the league however due to being pounded so hard into that round hole.
