Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

Ok I will avoid discussing potential landing spots and players affected by the possible outcomes until I see a confirmed with link thread as well I guess.

In the meantime I found this funny and true today..

Watching this video brought up anger I haven’t felt since February or march. Absolutely absurd to hear a coach say this

Knoblauch absolutely destroyed Tocchet head-to-head last season. He had a calculated backup plan for everything that happened. Tocchet just stuck to his guns despite anything changing around him.
did part of his plan involve us rolling out our 3rd string goalie, with a banged up D and our $11.6MM ghost C?

The only team that played the Oilers better than us last year was the eventual cup winner.

But whatever you have to do to convince yourself that him leaving isn't a bad thing.....

His defencive system has come at the expense of offense.

Until proven otherwise.

We lost a decent coach and a great interview. We did not lose some coaching savant.

Can you elaborate?
Pretty much what @Diablo2020 said. My issue with it is that the team was last in shots. while yes, getting shots with traffic in front is a great idea, if that’s your whole offensive strategy and you are actively coaching not to do anything else that is insanely problematic. It also explains the teams absolute dogshit power play.
I stand by that this team will be improved next year with a normal coach and if management doesn’t drop the ball

It’s obvious that that was Tocchet’s entire system. Basically the Carolina Hurricanes without the team speed, team skill, or any back up plan when countered.
I would argue they had the skill but were being coached to not use it and just defer everything to Hughes. Also explains, in part, why the defense was an utter tire fire the first half. Yes it was objectively worse skill wise, but if you know that why would you continue to employ a strategy that relies so heavily on players that can barely string a pass together?

we were a top 6 scoring team last year, top 3 in net goals. despite Pettersson ghosting the last 20 games of the year. but sure, whatever you need to tell yourself.

Carolina is the opposite in the offensive zone though - they throw pucks on net from everywhere, the opposite of what Tocchet encourages.

Funny enough, Carolina has also moved away from being such a heavy dump and chase team. They started to move away last season and were above average this year in the rate of controlled entries based on data I saw recently.

I dont need to tell me anything.

The fact that could not tell what happened last year that is all I need to know about you and your ability to understand the game.

It's not like McDavid scored last night by throwing the puck across the net and it bounced . . . wait, it's not like Vegas won with 0.4 seconds left by throwing the puck across the net and it bounced . . . wait, it's not like four of the nine goals scored in FLA's win over Toronto were off the goalie's own teamma . . . wait, nevermind - get those pucks back to the point, just like every defensive system currently employed by every team in the NHL is designed to achieve by crowding the house

If they elect to not go with Manny I am intrigued by Mitch Love if Washington is willing to let him interview & Todd Nelson as he won b2b calder trophies in the AHL.

I have seen Marco Sturms name pop up anyone have any insight to his coaching style?

Unsustainable shooting percentage.
this is such a bullshit argument. The team at 5v5 last year played with more structure and puck support than it had since some of the prime Sedin years. it was a massive contributor to share of chances (7th best) , the high danger variety in particular (4the best). which they converted at a higher rate than any other team league wide. The way they played was a massive contributor to the shooting %.

Nah. Were they able to sustain their offense? No because it was unsustainable.

Why did Toc abandon this midway through the season? Oh well.
