Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

How Tocchet’s star has fallen. Last year Coach of the Year, he leaves for greener personal pastures and is immediately turned into a heel.
More like Tocchet was always a heel, and people here just ignored it cause he was winning. Tocchet is a decent coach and had success so people were willing to look past the fact that he's a convicted felon that had to literally purge his twitter because there would have been an uproar if the casual fans knew what kind of person he is.

Kinda gross to run him down now that he's moved on. He made this team more prepared accountable and structured than we had seen in a long time. He just couldn't align himself with the upstairs and players going forward.

As far as his past we all make mistakes in life.

Good grief our governments are happy to plead ignorance and collect money from worse things everyday. In fact they run their own gambling rings now at Casinos paid for by tax dollars. Washing known drug dealers money. Handing out drugs and providing places to do them. 10k grants for 18yr olds to have sex change operations and offer services for known gang affiliated people from outside countries to live here on the dimes of working people trying to purchase homes which prices skyrocketed due to yet more criminals and persons with overseas numbered companies snapping up real estate as safe havens to wash and secure their money.

But yes Rick Tocchet he's a bad dude its a good thing the police force got him for doing their plans

Rant aside.. It's actually a good thing for both the team and Tocchet that he thought long and hard and made the right decision.

The team can now move forward with someone who can foster a good relationship with our top players and RT doesn't have to put up a facade take a cheque and have a player he doesn't respect as his go to guy.

I can appreciate that as much as creating another short term problem sucks to endure

I dont know if its been posted anywhere yet and I dont wanna snipe the transcribe job from the others who do a great job but I wanna post this here for all.

If Gary Mason thinks Huggy's gone, we're beyond ******.

"Rebuilding by default season one of the Mpetey contract"

- Me a whole bunch of times
This is literally all conjecture. "Maybe he thinks".

Don't fall for sports media nonsense. They don't even report on the sport, just the drama these days. And so many fall for it hook line and sinker.

Some of what you say here has merit. But running down trans people and acting as if they are a 'problem' for us 'hard working people to own homes' is mindless recitation of American right wing talking points.

I don't think it reflects well on ownership or the direction of the franchise that they wanted Tocchet and he chose to leave.

With that said, I'm withholding judgment until I see the next step. I do think that Tocchet was aligned with a particular kind of player and a particular kind of play style and perhaps was limited in his ability to integrate and mentor other skillsets or personality types.

I know he was a MAGA guy, and the gambling stuff in 06 is a bad look. There are things many of us had to look past to appreciate him for finally bringing a sense of competence to this team.

We could bring in a coach who is a better overall fit, I don't think Tocchet is infallible.

I also think it looks bad on him that after a difficult year interpersonally, you know like one where a coach actually has to coach, he bails on the franchise.

If God has any mercy send us Cooper.

The ROWs are not what they seem

what a ridiculous reply. none of your examples are related to this sports team at all.

Sports is a business. Rich tochett helped destroy this team and our star player along with management.

If you don't hold management accountable you have absolutely no understanding of how the world works.

The fish rots from the head.

I think this is the most likely case in terms of what the team option meant (i.e., you could exercise the option, but if he doesn't report, then your only real remedy is not allowing him to be employed with other teams and perhaps suing for breach of contract although proving damages may be a tad bit difficult).

Thinking about it a bit more, and assuming the above is correct, I think the use of the team option only makes sense where you can't agree on salary, for example, but the coach wants to come back. So, perhaps it is true that management may have been willing to exercise the team option, but once they knew that money didn't matter and that Tochett didn't want to come back, they didn't want to exercise the option because they still respected Tochett and didn't want to sue him and/or prevent him from working as a head coach elsewhere.
But you also believed that management just didn't envision a scenario where Tocchet would not re-sign if offered a satisfactory contract (and I think you are probably right here). I think that money clearly mattered and I would think that Rutherford has been in this business long enough to know when someone really didn’t want to come back. I don’t doubt what Rutherford said about his negotiations with Tocchet here.

But again, the team option was negotiated. It’s there for the team to exercise. The team can easily exercise the option and work towards an extension. They can also “mutually agree to part ways” and release Tocchet from his contractual obligations if something satisfactory can’t be worked out and the team didn’t want to force Tocchet to be here. That would be in line with Allvin’s messaging that there was no urgency to sign Tocchet to an extension because the team held a club option (which again is a reasonable approach).

"What kind of person he is"? He's a convicted felon for gambling, does that make him a bad person? I don't know Tocchet personally, maybe he is an asshole, but there are a lot of stones being cast by people who seem to be holier than thou...simply because he decided to up and leave town. It's kind of pathetic really.

Laughable. Sports is a business, unless you are a disgruntled fan, then it becomes personal and the only "business" that matters are your feelings, and obviously yours have been hurt by Tocchet. You've lost objectivity.

I really was a Tocchet fan. His communication style with his accountability/encouragement/honesty was refreshing and exactly what I hope to hear from a head coach.

That said, I wasn't always a fan of his deployment. The fact that he played D-Petey on the right side for stretches was almost shocking. His righty, lefty obsession was annoying.

While I appreciate his "playing the right way" message, which I believe in the end is a winning strategy, one could also argue that his doghouse stunted the development/growth of a few players (Hoglander, EP40 in particular and to a lesser extent Kuzmenko).

The biggest problem with him leaving is the impact on QH's decision, and we can't really answer that right now. The silver lining is that this could open up opportunities and accelerate the development of other players. I'm thinking specifically of Lekkerimaki, Kudyavtsev and Raty.
