Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

he commuted from vegas to back east for years to do broadcast stuff. if he was so set on living out east why put himself through that?

i'm not saying he doesn't want to *coach* out east but let's not pretend he's homesick for chestnut hill
Cuz Atlanta is not Philly?

tocchet has lived in vegas for a decade. he's not an 'east coast guy'. he just wanted out of vancouver for some reason
He would have been fine coaching Vancouver..but why would he if his buddies in Philly are calling ? Vancouver was just a job. Ppl from the east don't give a flying F about Vancouver.

Ironically if our team didn't burn so bright last year , there wouldn't be that much interest in Tocchet. And he would have been committed to this project. But last year opened doors for him and his contract was lapsing.

It all began with letting Zadorov walk IMO, this whole clusterf*** of a season
Zadorov gone + Cole gone + Pettersson fitness level + Joshua’s diagnosis + Demkos injury ++

And now this off season they only need to find 3 legitimate top six forwards, a new head coach, and determine a way to not piss off their blue chip prospect.

What do you mean? Z has been terrible in Boston, his contract is an albatross and our defence has been the least of our problems.
I don’t know where you hear the narrative that he has been terrible for Boston, but he’s been very good for Boston.

Especially in the second half, he’s a +25 as well on a terrible defensive team

It's the bullshit narrative created by some some fans who don't understand hockey and only look at points. The same happened with after we lost Hamhuis and Tanev for nothing.

Zadorov is a +25 on a team where 90% of the players are minus since the Bruins have been tanking after McAvoy got injured. A solid and physcial defensive defenceman that only struggled vs McDavid speed but everyone does. His job is not put up points.

I don't understand why an extension wasn't negotiated last summer after the season we had. Tocchet won coach of the year and management "forced" him to coach out the final year of his contract? Actually I misspoke because the team had a team option. As Allvin explained, there wasn't an urgency to extend Tocchet because of the club option. Ah but then Rutherford felt it wasn't right to exercise that team option so what a useless team option that was.

As for Tocchet.I do think he deserves another year to prove himself given the injuries and the drama surrounding the team. I was a bit indifferent in bringing him back though. He's good at talking and with his pedigree and penchant for surrounding himself with famous ex-hockey players as assistant coaches, players tend to like him. He's a decent coach but I don't think he's a top coach in a league whhere coaches can get replaced and achieve short term success. I do not think he's good for young forwards with 200 foot games that need development. I don't think it's a coincidence that young, skilled, offensive players have struggled under Tocchet. The team did remain relatively competitive but so were one or two of his Coyotes teams. I think he deserves some responsibility for how the Petey and Miller situation was managed. It couldn't have helped that he threw Petey under the boss when he contradicted Petey's explanation the severity of his knee injury. At the end of the day he couldn't get Petey out of his slmp. He couldn't get Hoglander out of his slump. He ran into similar issues with OEL back in his Coyotes days. Every other head coach has gotten OEL to contribute more including OEL's last two coaches.

Regardless, if the guy doesn't want to be there then see ya. Don't really appreciate his lame excuses and at least from what Rutherford is saying he was kind of strung us along.

It will be interesting to see if Foote stays (his contract is reportedly expired). I believe Foote does live BC? Not sure if he has moved back to Denver.

Sometimes you have to rub your eyes in disbelief. Did this train-wreck of a season really happen, or was it just a bad nightmare?

It started with talk of being a Cup contender, and ended with the reigning Jack Adams coach departing, along with most of his assistants. In between there was dressing-room turmoil; the forced trade of Miller; injuries to too many key players to count; and a massive roster turnover. And of course their $11.7m franchise player going from a 100 point season to just 45.

And of course they went from Pacific Division champions to play-off also-rans. Points-wise it wasn't obviously the worst season ever. But by whatever yardstick you use, this season has to be one of the most disappointing in franchise history.

To his credit, Rutherford was taking ownership of this melt-down in his latest presser. He acknowledged that "he he has to do a better job." Amen to that.

But it'll a long time before Canuck fans can block this season out of their minds.

If he was looked at as a liability they wouldn’t have him out there talking to the media. I think he’s clearly trying to soften the blow to fans that Hughes future isn’t here. He just did this with the Pettersson Miller situation. He said similar things in interviews to get us ready that Miller or Pettersson were to be moved. Does he have a trade and master plan in place already? Of course not. But I think he clearly notices that we will likely have to move Hughes, given he needs to be re-signed next summer and where the team is heading. We don’t have the assets to rebuild the top 6 and Pettersson and Demko are question marks right now. Their clearly looking into the future and have identified a massive problem that won’t be popular with the fans and he wants to get that idea out there now.
Since its more than a full year out from when that decision has to be made, and even longer if any trade is to be made (since it would be likely after next season and playoffs are over), that isnt an intelligent plan. Again, thats why I focused on the timeline here. You get Hughes, a pretty quiet if not asocial guy, harassed for a full year by the media and fans in exchange for... fans are used to it... more than a year out?

On the Miller/Pettersson front it makes sense since it was a really short turnaround to when a move was made and they were actively in trade discussions when he said it. It wasnt some hypothetical for more than a full year away.

If what you are describing is the motivation, its a wholly dumb idea for him to have said anything. If the timeline for a move is much shorter then it makes some sense, otherwise you are just making more problems for your best player and team captain for an extremely small benefit (especially when you have ALREADY said the thing about his brothers, so no need to double down and say he isnt returning your calls).

JR sounded a little blindsided by Tocchet's decision.
From what he was saying, Tocchet was discussing his summer plans for the team, talking about flying to Sweden to visit Petey, and asking JR about bringing another coach onto the staff, so it’s a little weird he’d be so invested in the summer planning and then decide he doesn’t want to be here.

I don't understand this at all. If by January he hadn't been extended, what exactly did JR expect to happen?

I'm not sure if there's been any reporting on if we tried re-sign him in the off-season and all that, but as it stands: a coach on an expiring contract (essentially) that hasn't signed up in January, and then February, and then March...like really? what did JR expect?

Somewhat bummed, but I think there are better options out there.

Not trying to stir the pot with Quenville but that Florida team was his until he was banned.

Our PoS owner would go well with him.

Tocchet's son lives in Seattle. I think they said that on Canuck's related show where they were trying to connect Tocchet to the Kraken job. Along with the Francis/Botterill connection.
Wait he does? Then what’s this about being closer to family?

I'd imagine the list of candidates would be like

Todd Nelson, Joel Quenneville, Manny Malhotra, Peter Laviolette, David Carle, Jeremy Colliton, Gerard Gallant, Jay Woodcroft, Mike Sullivan

And the top candidates being Laviolette (JR connection), Manny, and Woodcroft. Less likely would be Sullivan and Quenneville

At some point in time players will talk about what happened in the dressing room this season. I think there was more than the Miller problem
