Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

Has Hughes called JR yet....that sounded bad.

At this point the best course might be to trade Hughes+ for whoever has the 1st overall in 2026.

Honestly, I think he’s priming us for Hughes being moved, probably next offseason.
You may be right. The so called core , with Boeser's imminent departure, has basically dissolved. I can see Demko and Petterson getting traded this off season and Hughes next.

If Hughes contract was up at the end of 2026 instead of 2027, what are odds he'd be staying around with Tocchet gone? I'd say not better than about 10 percent.

So in terms of Hughes re-upping in VanCity it really all comes down to next season. Another season remotely like this past one--and the Canucks will be peddling Hughes around the league before he walks as a UFA.

Trade him for the 1st overall in 26. He's not staying.

I don’t see how we can convince Hughes to stay here within 12 months given the state of the team. Just look at our forward group, we need to completely rebuild the top 6 and there’s so many questions around EP40 and Demko’s health. There’s a reason why Tocchet ran out of here right after the season ended.

Its wild to me that Rutherford cant think for even half a second before he says something like that. Maybe something serious happened or Hughes is busy? Like why should Hughes have to answer to the media about it because Rutherford cant professionally just say that they will definitely talk about it or to not comment at all. Rutherford is a walking unforced error.

Love him. Cut the BS and say what he's feeling.

Rutherford knew what he was doing when he said that. Just like he knew the market would talk about him saying Hughes wants to play with his brothers. He’s very clearly priming us for a future without Hughes. They’ve done this recently with Miller Pettersson about trading one of them. This fan base needs to get ready for a Hughes trade.

only way this isn't a complete disaster is if they get cooper or sullivan

cooper?

Since Sully is not coming out west, bring on Quennville

but yeah, just hire hughes’ dad and call it a day?

seriously though, of course hughes said he liked the coach. what did you expect him to say?

personally, i liked tocchet because he could kick jt’s ass if he needed to and it kept him in line. then he didn’t so i’m not too fussed.

pk was great, defence was good sometimes horribad sometimes, offence relied on lucky bounces and was boring af to watch.

he was a great interview though, and a straight shooter when he talked to us through the press. i’ll miss that.

Is there something specific that happened here? First year coaching....a lot of water under the bridge since then. He's done a good job here.
He handled the defense here, head coach is a big step up. He had a junior team struggling to score, how is going to get offense out of an nhl team?

This logic only works in hindsight though. Keep in mind that if no Hughes trade actually happens in the very short term, then all he did was make Hughes' life more miserable with the media for a full year (which doesnt help you keep him if that is at all possible). Even the most mastermind 4D chess interpretation of Rutherfords comments wouldnt make that a win. Hed have been better off not speaking on it til it was closer to a reality. To me a trade doesnt make sense in the off season or even at the trade deadline this year so it is an asinine thing to put out there.

If Rutherford is as much of a genius as people saying this is all part of the master plan think he is... then he has a real short turnaround time to make that plan make sense. I fully believe hes an old man who is fairly disinhibited at this point and just says whatever while also enjoying the media attention from saying those things. Sometimes his nonsense is revealing and sometimes its just nonsense.

If he was looked at as a liability they wouldn’t have him out there talking to the media. I think he’s clearly trying to soften the blow to fans that Hughes future isn’t here. He just did this with the Pettersson Miller situation. He said similar things in interviews to get us ready that Miller or Pettersson were to be moved. Does he have a trade and master plan in place already? Of course not. But I think he clearly notices that we will likely have to move Hughes, given he needs to be re-signed next summer and where the team is heading. We don’t have the assets to rebuild the top 6 and Pettersson and Demko are question marks right now. Their clearly looking into the future and have identified a massive problem that won’t be popular with the fans and he wants to get that idea out there now.
