Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

It’s clear Tocchet sees so much uncertainty with this team going forward he bailed.

Just everything this year was a shit show.
That’s the disheartening thing about this, he wants to win another cup and realized it’s not happening with this roster and chemistry. He didn’t want to coach a Pettersson-led team (in terms of forwards).

I think Tocchet is overrated. He was obviously popular with some players, and was quote-worthy in his media availabilities, and given Quinn's comments the team had no choice but to try to re-sign him.

But it may be the best he walked away, even if it feels like a kick to the gut

A coach who has a Quinn Hughes on his team but is bottom 3 at generating offensive chances does not have an effective system. Full stop. This idea of a big, slow defence was clearly his creation and sunk the team's chances this season. He was supposed to adjust his system to make up for these deficiencies, but that didn't happen. From a viewers' perspective, his system was also mind-numbingly boring.

The idea that he is good at managing the room is also questionable. Aside from the unresolved question as to who decided it would be a good job to get JT Miller to "motivate" Pettersson this season (that alone should be a fireable offence), it was his job more than anyone's to manage that relationship. It was also his job to figure out how to get the best out of his $12m player. It was his job to keep his team motivated even when things weren't going well, which he failed to do. How many times can you hear a coach complain about his team's lack of effort?

Tocchet had a great 23-24 season, but on the merits, his performance this season was abominable. I was wiling to give him the benefit of the doubt and had hope that with a bolstered assistant coaching staff he'd have a better season next year.

Top to bottom, there is plenty of blame to spread around for the team's poor performance this season, but Tocchet absolutely deserves his share of it. At the end of the day, committing $25m to this coach was likely going to be a mistake, and let's hope the team makes a good choice for his replacement.
Yeah mostly agree with this. The guy had a season where we had insane goaltending (not getting into PDO nonsense but our biggest drop in PDO wasn't shooting percentage it was save percentage). Demko masked a lot and clutch scoring was something we came to expect. How many games did Brock or Petey or JT or Quinn pull out of a hat in the final minutes last year?

It's just not excusable how ineffective they were offensively. They were deeper and had more contributions from deeper in the lineup than most teams we had recently.

Also kind of weird that someone who models themselves as a tough "work through it" kind of guy bails the moment the grass seems greener on the other side. He was not a hot commodity coming off his miserable stint in Arizona. The only reason he's up for jobs is cause he was given a shot here and, to his credit, had a very good year. But leaving immediately when it turns the other way isn't something I respect. As for us losing him, I remain ambivalent. Ill miss Foote and Gonchar a lot more. And Quinn obviously vouched for him but the guy didn't resolve the locker room issues (and made them worse by feeding the media all the time) and he was really weird about who he demanded perfection from. JT could give it away in front of the net in a one goal game and not miss a shift but Petey could lose a puck behind the opposing net and not see the ice for 10 minutes. Hoglander and Podkolzin and Kuzmenko had great games where a single mistake and we never saw them again, even if we needed a goal late.

I'd be happy he's gone and not ambivalent if I was hyped for the options out there. I don't think we get someone like Sullivan, far more likely its Laviolette or an unknown or overrated guy. Not hyped for it, but could be wrong. If I'm a coach wanting to win I'm wary of the Canucks right now compared to the NYR or the chance to coach Sid.

The team doesn't need a coach that isn't %100 invested. Tocchet was part of the problem. He let the lockeroom implode like I've never seen before. A new voice and a less boring system might just give the team the change they need.

If they don't get the organization back on track for next season, then management needs to go too. Now things really are straight-forward:
stop f***in around, and get Willander signed, find a coach that will re-energize the team, and then get to re-vamping the forwards. Clean house and rebuild if management fails at any of the above.

Great post!

I was openly critical of him since early in the season for a variety of reasons.
Like you literally could see the downward progression on offense around February of the 23-24 season and the more used to the system they got the uglier it got. I haven't purposely turned off a game unless we're losing by 3+ goals and that's based on superstition where I watch the ticker and go back if they score but this year on so many occasions the team was just unwatchable like the wild used to be.
He sucked the life out of EP, forced a trade of a guy that EP actually had massive chemistry with, constantly played grinders in the top six while guys like Hoglander and later Lekkerimakki toiled on the bottom with barely any ice time.
His lineup choices sucked, often splitting up lines that clicked only to keep forcing other combos that clearly didn't. A good example was not playing EP with Sherwood and Hoglander even tho that line had success when put together, or the all swede line with EP, Hogz and Linus was absolutely dominate in the few games only to be inexplicably broken up.
Lastly players had the creativity coached out of them and I'm willing to bet EP has a dominant season next year.

Since Sully is not coming out west, bring on Quennville or Laviolette.
No rookie or AHL coach.
Team needs an older coach with cup pedigree that isn't Bruce level of go, go, go but one that allows for something other than dump and chase.

Tocchet's son lives in Seattle. I think they said that on Canuck's related show where they were trying to connect Tocchet to the Kraken job. Along with the Francis/Botterill connection.

Tocchet left the Canucks pretty easily, it was very clear he wanted out. Doesn’t matter if Philly tampered, if he wants out let him go. We don’t want someone here who wants out. This team has been such a mess, I get why he would run as fast as he can out of here. Management really needs to figure out how to fix this mess and if Hughes is staying or going, if they know he is leaving in two years, move him and cash in as much as you can. Unfortunately this EP40 mess has been very costly to this franchise
