Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

Giving your top prospect an ultimatum over a few hundred thousand dollars to keep your "structure" in tact, then publicly threatening him with 2 more years of college (and finishing his degree, or making him play pro in Sweden, severing the relationship) is amazing work.

That was like watching my grandfather slowly go bat shit crazy as the conversation wears on.

No to Peter Laviolette.

Not surprised Mike Sullivan is unlikely to come here. I’m certain he will end up in NYR. I think it’s likely Tocchet ends up with the Flyers.
Tocc to Philly and Sully to NY are almost assured.

My prediction is the Canucks end up promoting Manny because he'll most likely be the cheapest option available and he won't turn them down.

His comments are stupid. Made it sound like they’ve got predetermined contracts based on where each player is drafted versus how they developed. If you're a later round pick that puts up star numbers after the draft, JR all but confirms you’re getting less money.
JR is quickly demonstrating he's just a senile old man at this point.

Just an embarrassing situation. No shot Tocchet leaves if he thinks this is a team that could win a cup, no matter how strong the allure of going back east is.

Fact is management wanted him back, the players wanted him back, but he’s not back. Either they didn’t pay him enough, or didn’t give him the resources he needs to be successful (players/facilities).

Reflects extremely poorly on all parties involved, and is a culmination of a ton of shitty decisions all around since the end of last year.
The constant dysfunction and off-ice drama mostly instigated by JR probably doesn't help.

Agreed on all fronts, but I will add I don't think Manny is a bad hire either. The logic of hiring him because of who are idiot owner will be dumb, but the candidate himself is respectable.

He's been an NHL assistant for 7 years with two franchises and developed very well over the course of the year in a head coaching role in the AHL. Familiar with the area and likely wont' have the same (supposed) issues Tocchet had with being on the West Coast.

JR is so f***ing shitty it almost makes me miss Benning.

Benning was just purely incompetent, but Allvin and Rutherford have both been incompetent and absolutely malicious towards our own players.
JR was the closest to Benning in terms of how he operated. So again, it always goes back to ownership and winning now without ever having a 2-3 year plan.

Meh don't care. Think this FO has done a great job hiring coaches. Then wanting Tocchet back had me slightly in favor of bringing him back, but I'm confident this group will find a strong replacement.

Hope Tocchet gets boo'd when Philly visits next year.

Why? That would just be petty.

Malhotra has 7 years of experience as an NHL assistant coach now, and he's definitely proved his value as a head coach at the AHL level. Perhaps you'd like to get him a couple more years of experience at the AHL level but he's not an unresonable hire.

That said, it's rare to see 1st time NHL head coaches have a lot of success, but that may also be due to the fact they are generally not hired to coach winning teams.

It would be interesting to see what Malhotra and an experienced assistant coach could achieve.
Agreed. I’m not sure it’s necessarily a bad thing, but your second paragraph is why I think they’ll be hesitant to go down that path.
