Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

I’ve grown up in Vancouver. Was a fan of this team since I was 10 years old. That’s 21 years and I am done… the fact that tochett is leaving because we don’t have a training facility is a joke.

Won’t consider watching again until we have a change of ownership. This isn’t an overreaction. I love hockey and I’ll start cheering for a new team.
Don't be naive dude. It's just a pretext. He is leaving because he gets more money and term in Philly or NY. Dude is acting like he just won a few SC and not like a dude that has one legit playoffs season in 9 years as a HC.

Don't care that he's gone in particular - I do care that this is another bad look for management. They did all they could to get Tocchet his guys and now the guy just bolts - which is fair, it's his right and there's more to the job than just loyalty.

Management needs to figure out who their coach is gonna be and deal with this quickly and efficiently. They've greatly improved their defense, goaltending depth, and the floor of the team. More scoring and elite talent up front and a coach that can utilize the players to their capabilities (and not rEProgRaM) is pertinent for this team.

two thoughts, which kind of contradict each other, but whatever

1) he quit on the team. **** him. he/his team has leaked the practice facility line in a bid to try to make quitting appear to be more than just money/opportunity but I don't buy it at all.
2) it's absolutely the right call for him. his value will likely never be higher. if he was choosing between a 5Y deal and a 5Y deal with the Flyers, the reality is the Flyers deal is safer for them. He's made the play-offs two times in his coaching career. If he didn't make the playoffs next season, how safe was he, really? Not very, imo. He's got at least two years with the Flyers before he even has to make the playoffs. Clear air for him to operate in. It's the right call. But don't try to tell me it's about the practice facility.

i guess the 3rd thought is lol at management for not being able to keep their guy. good job guys.

Woodcroft has one of the strangest faces i’ve seen and for that reason I don’t want him to be our coach.

But he was on The Littlest Hobo! That enough is need ed to be a coach in Canada.

And he brings in, you know, the goods.

Rutherford says Tocchet wants to move back to the Eastern part of the US. Probably confirms he's Philly bound.

Just an embarrassing situation. No shot Tocchet leaves if he thinks this is a team that could win a cup, no matter how strong the allure of going back east is.

Fact is management wanted him back, the players wanted him back, but he’s not back. Either they didn’t pay him enough, or didn’t give him the resources he needs to be successful (players/facilities).

Reflects extremely poorly on all parties involved, and is a culmination of a ton of shitty decisions all around since the end of last year.

I think they’ll end up hiring a middle of the pack candidate like Jay Woodcroft and promote Manny as an assistant coach. Low chance they’ll pony up for a Mike Sullivan.
Don't mind Woodcroft that much tbh. He's pretty green and 100% deserves another shot at a head job role.

I felt like was the fall guy for Holland's incompetence.

Unfortunately other than Sullivan the retreads out there don’t look particularly appealing either. Very much feels like even if you didn’t think Tocchet was a great coach the downside greatly outweighs the upside.

Malhotra seems to have done a good job in Abbotsford but making him HC after only one season seems a bit aggressive.

Do wonder if they go off the beaten path for a replacement.

Malhotra has 7 years of experience as an NHL assistant coach now, and he's definitely proved his value as a head coach at the AHL level. Perhaps you'd like to get him a couple more years of experience at the AHL level but he's not an unresonable hire.

That said, it's rare to see 1st time NHL head coaches have a lot of success, but that may also be due to the fact they are generally not hired to coach winning teams.

It would be interesting to see what Malhotra and an experienced assistant coach could achieve.
