Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

I'll miss the defensive game and the new Myers, but that's about it. I guess we'll never get to see what a fully "reprogrammed" Pettersson looks like, either. What a shame. Was going well.

For me, it's hardly even about Rick Tocchet, per se.

It's more about what it represents. The sheer volume of mishandled situations piling up is just tiresome and, frankly, embarrassing.

They'll replace him, and heck, they may even enjoy a nice "new coach" bump. But it's tiring.

Watch Rutherford step away now too.
It would be the best news ever. He managed to f*** up even what Jimbo managed to build by accident.

Fredo should apologize to Mike and ask to come back and save the franchise while we still have Hughes. We need a forward thinking president more than ever. Gillis can hire a GM and other competent people.

So, I like Tocchet and appreciate the work he did with the Canucks. And in no way do I think he is bad coach, he is an above average coach in the NHL and his next team will be very happy with him.

I think it needs to be said that the roster he started with the Canucks especially on the backend is very different to this team and don't think he adapted enough considering how awful the d-core he inherited was. The what if I will have is, how would Tocchet have coached this team with a d-core that he trusted and a full offseason and training camp?

We’re a Poverty Franchise while our ownership is worth $3.3B

No playoff revenue to pay for Arena Renovations? Raise ticket prices!

No sweetheart deal for a Practice Facility? Blame the price of land!

Never mind not signing Willander over $200k….

Can’t spell “Cancer” without “Francesco”

Another thing is, I think the media here was getting to him. Media questions felt too much like work for him. In a non Canadian market, like on TNT , it is all just cliches, jokes and bullsh**. Not very much technical stuff. He was getting pissy towards the end with the media.

Despite all the protestations and denials, when Torts was let go in Philly, the clock started ticking on Tocchet's tenure as the Canucks coach.

The Canucks, to their credit, weren't prepared to just let him walk, and exercised their option on him for next season. But the most telling comment came from Rutherford at his end-of-season presser. He basically said to effect "that if Tocchet wanted to leave, they wouldn't stand in his way."

Rutherford is pretty adept at signaling what's next. And Tocchet bolting now seemed inevitable. And all the blather about a contract demand of $5m a season or a practice facility, was just a lot of white noise.

So it's 'next man up' in the Canucks coaching carousel. And the only 'positive' is that it'll be Rutherford and Allvin who do the hiring. And we won't end up with a ludicrous situation where the owner fired both Benning and Green; and then went out and hired Boudreau himself.

Small mercies I guess.

Most of the media questions this year were about Miller vs Petey, which is a problem management ignored and let it spiral out of control. Honestly, our management group did a horrible job this season. They didn’t give Tocchet the players he wants, but traded the player who plays his way with Miller. This organization is a big mess right now, maybe a bigger mess than when they took over.

People overrate the Jack Adams too much, it’s basically a most improved/beat expectation award. Like, let’s actually look at his career accomplishments.

2nd oldest head coach EVER to win a 1st round series. 2 playoff appearances in 9 seasons. Strangles offense everywhere he goes. No real ability to coach on the fly, adjust systems, or utilize players he’s given to the best of their ability.

He’s a 61 year old dinosaur of the game who is out of touch with the modern game and how it’s played.

I think we’ll miss Gonchar, I think he’s the architect of our defensive improvements, but he could stay on. Not sure what Foote contributed, but I know he we a bad head coach for Kelowna that also stifled offense in his 2 years, so good riddance too.

Go out and get a modern coach, like a David Carle or someone adjacent. A guy that can grow with the team and be our Cooper, Sullivan, Carbery.

If Quinn is gonna leave anyways, might as well set up a culture with a young head coach that can grow with the next group of talent.

I’ve grown up in Vancouver. Was a fan of this team since I was 10 years old. That’s 21 years and I am done… the fact that tochett is leaving because we don’t have a training facility is a joke.

Won’t consider watching again until we have a change of ownership. This isn’t an overreaction. I love hockey and I’ll start cheering for a new team.

Mike Sullivan returning to the Canucks as head coach would be nice though. He had a good long stint as our head coach that one time Tortorella lost his mind and got suspended. Every time I think about those 6 games I shed a tear wondering what could've been. Wonder if he feels the same about us

I think Tocchet was a good "youngish" coach with some strong systems on defence. Those helped the team turn it around fairly quickly and become more consistent.

However, he couldn't adjust in the playoffs. He made numerous mistakes last post-season and got outcoached a lot.

He had the typical defensive coach's issue of being able to coax offence out of a team while asking them to be responsible. This worked well the first half of the first full season but got worse with time.

So basically he had promise but lots of warts that I thought he would be able to work through. But that was never a guarantee. If he wants to leave, I think it's a big mistake on his part. He's not such a complete product that he can step into another team and generate instant playoff success. Eventually we needed someone who would guide them deep into the playoffs and from what I saw he had only shown that he could get enough consistency out of the team to get them into the playoffs.

This season thanks to all the coach posts by Vector, he complained a lot about the players not implementing plays or strategies the staff had to put into place. This happened basically all season and I find that concerning. Despite the unique and debilitating circumstances with EP/TD/JTM and to a lesser extent Soucy, the team didn't play cohesively together until the last 15 games and by then it was too late.

I didn't see much commitment to the system we had seen the year before, with us constantly giving up the blueline and not having enough discipline in the neutral zone. Our forecheck was more aggressive but didn't generate offence as it was intended and inadvertently compounded our defensive problems.

The way I look at this is there was a reason to let Tocchet grow with the team if he had extended. However, to my eye there were a lot of underlying issues, to say nothing of personnel management which is another whole thread.

There's too many more mature coaches out there who have coached long cup runs to overpay Tocchet and hope that he overcomes his current limitations, Especially since many of them have simply just worn out their welcome with their current teams and could really turn around a dressing room since their voice will be fresh. So thanks Tocc, but onwards and upwards.

Just highlighting this for no reason.
