Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return

The longer this dragged on the more likely that this would be the outcome.

Changes everything IMO

EP and QH future especially. The former more likely to stay, the latter more likely to go.

said this in the rumours thread but i don't like that he's built us a team identity and now we're leaving. a lot of the players we have fit that mold and it feels like an organizational reset with him gone.

this also lowers our chances of hughes re-signing, which is even worse. ugh.

Honestly, unless we manage to acquire another Hughes brother in the interim, I don't think it matters much who coaches this team.

Hughes is gone.

Honestly, it would be a silly career decision to remain in Vancouver, especially if he has any cup aspirations and wants to win.

Not a fan of him leaving after a year and a half, bad look for both the team and the individual.

At least no one can complain that Tochett is the problem with the team anymore though. If you’re in here complaining after complaining about that, get bent.

Will be interesting to see which direction the Canucks go in their coaching search.

On the one hand, Manny Malhotra has definitely paid his dues - as an eye-in-the-sky coach with the Canucks, as an on-bench Assistant in Toronto, and as a successful AHL Head Coach in Abbotsford. He's got Vancouver roots and definitely seems bound for an NHL job.

Or, do the Canucks opt for a more experienced voice?

Will be interesting to watch. But man, between the Tocchet news, the practice facility struggles, and the uncertainty around Hughes, it's a tough go right now.

We are likely losing Foote and Gonchar as well. Scares me that we built a team around structure and team defense, but are losing the architects of it. Also concerned how this may affect Lankinen and our D long term (not even considering Hughes leaving).

Sell the team, cowards
Yes, the Lankinen contract could age quite poorly.

On the flipside, Pettersson's play could also turn around.

Think it was already stated by someone somewhere that if Toc goes he will take his staff with him.

Management has reiterated the need to go for it while Hughes is here, and I really don't see how promoting a first time NHL coach would be doing that.

I think they’ll end up hiring a middle of the pack candidate like Jay Woodcroft and promote Manny as an assistant coach. Low chance they’ll pony up for a Mike Sullivan.

This + the Willander holdup reeks of organizational dysfunction and makes for a brutal start to the offseason.

More upset about losing Foote and Gonchar than Tocchet, but the fact that Tocchet was clearly their guy and they couldn’t retain him is pretty embarassing.

Jeez, forgot all about the Willander hold up.

Definitely feels like Ownership is pinching pennies.

Losing Foote hurts. I liked our pk and the defensive work he did.
