Confirmed with Link: Canucks announce HC Rick Tocchet will Not Return (UPD May 13: Tocchet to coach Flyers)

I have no issue with Tocchet leaving, his contract was up, and the Canucks weren't exercising the option, and he let them know early in the off-season. He's free to go, like players hitting UFA status.

That being said, I was on the fence with him as a coach, and think the Flyers overpaid in dollars and term.

I think it's completely unrealistic to expect a coach should just stay here forever at your bequest to meet pressure. He contract was not extended. People move on ... he made a personal life choice for what he thought would be best. It happens. My goodness ... the expectations people have are completely unrealistic. Would you make a major life changing decision to appease a bunch of hockey fans if it wasn't in your best interest?
Two and a half seasons are hardly forever. I don't think he was committed to the team and I'm glad he's gone. He was in Arizona longer with worse seasons. I will remember his tenure in Vancouver with a "Meh".

Yeah fair enough. I just don't think he ever signed on for life thus the structure of the deal, 2 year and 3rd year option which was not renewed. I think he put in 100% commitment while he was here though and he had lots of options as a result of that dedication and success. Best coach I've seen in Van for quite awhile.

I wish we had a better season with less turmoil and turnover as I think he would have stayed. That's the way the cookie crumbles though. On to the next chapter. Go Footey!

I think he's good, but has clearly gotten overrated largely based on the Canucks season last year.

I also don't think you can blame the guy ... the team could have likely extended him way earlier (and I think he probably would have signed last summer), but left it hanging around, and then due to various tire-fire related issues this season he decided to take the option to leave.

Management was clearly shocked he left, though (somewhat hilariously), as the way they talked about it right up until he left indicated they were supremely confident in retaining him.

I gotta ask, I don’t understand this new kitten gif obsession you have. I never said anything about it and suddenly it’s a thing the mods don’t like?

just a terrible combination of cancelled vacation plans (too much time on my hands this past), several spare bottles of wine (poor judgement made worse), finding a better way to post gifs (look out!), and worried that the mods wouldn't like the gif spam

I don't think anyone is saying that though. This seems to be a sticky point between the people saying he is free to go, and those saying while he was free to go it was also going completely against what he preached.

I am thoroughly enjoying Tocchet's post-Canucks media blitz, on Kyper & Bourne starting around 1hr15:

And I get your point. But what I want from Canucks players and coaches are people who want to be here: Kesler taking less money to stay with the Canucks, the Sedins, Naslund too I think.

I get you though. It's a business and people need to take care of their own interests. I think we both have great points here.

Oh my. Dallas has scored 3 in a couple minutes and taken the lead.
