Post-Game Talk: CANUCKS 3 Preds 1 (Hoglander, Karlsson, Suter)

To be quite honest, I think Hughes putting up points like this is a result of sub-optimal play on his part and is to the detriment of his teammates. Remember 2 years ago when the narrative was that Hughes had everything but a good shot and could stand to both develop a harder shot and shoot more? Well he has corrected too far in the shoot more category. Far too much of the Canucks' offense runs through getting him the puck at the point when he is on the ice, and it shows in the shot locations. As good as Hughes is, the Canucks would be far better off with someone who isn't shooting from the point 90% of the time taking the 8 shot attempts a game that Hughes throws at the net. Hughes has 14 goals, but only 2 unblocked high danger shot attempts all season (MoneyPuck), which is ~10% of the rest of the top 20 scorers in the league. Makar has 13 for comparison. He needs to start deferring more often to forwards, or at least to players that are in better scoring positions. It starts with Hughes, but the Canucks as a team need to take advantage of the fact that he is such a threat to beat his man from the blueline in that teams will cheat to cover him, which will create openings for other players.
Chicken and egg, though. Is the team suffering because people defer to Hughes too much, or is everything going through Hughes because the rest of the team is playing like ass?

But we can probably re acquired sprayers like him if we are going to contend, it's not the end of the world
Yeah, we need to have more vets on this teams

If you have Jordan on the team then you give him the f***ing ball.

Hughes is Jordan right now.

Canucks are ekeing out these wins. In some ways tells you that, just as much as you think this team blows, so do other teams. Really a few players holding this together.

Good

Demko - his play was the most important thing about this game from a Canuck point of view. Times when he still looked jittery handling the puck but also showed the quickness and net coverage he was (hopefully is) noted for. Optomistically he is on the road back. Having two good goal-tenders going, heading into the stretch, is crucial. However, you wonder that they might trade one.

Suter - just a solidly consistent effort. Could make the case he has been the best forward over the last while. (Garland could have say here) And all this without any drama. :DD

Hughes - is to hockey what Deepseek is to the AI.

Myers - another excellent game. League should supend him more often. Second best player on the ice if you exclude the goaltenders.

Pettersson - helped lead his line to a good game. Maybe should be kept with Swedish players (then they can mutter about Miller and get away with it). Just kidding here but the temptation might be huge.

Not Good

Boeser - stumbled around more awkwardly than usual. Had trouble handling the puck trying to get it in, and get it out. Played bogged down or simply went no where when he got (or sort of got) the puck

Soucy - can't handle any speed to the outside so ends up chasing his check to he net chopping at him all the while. Lots of time playing from his crease. After last year's good season has really faded badly. Got to figure injury is a part of this, but right now he is Desharnais-bad. In fact, might be worse.

Others

Hoglander scored and did some good things. But per usual lots of glitches. For example, in the second period, the team needed a line change and Hogs has an easy dump in. Instead, he decides to skate the puck back and around the neutral zone. Loses possession and the team spends the next two minutes in their zone as Nashville gets several chances on net. Hoglander has talent but sometimes plays like he just had a cerebral blow out.

Juulsen - played well enough. Went to the body better than the other d-man and good on the PK. Can give you this at times, but most Canuck fans know what lies around the corner.

Miller - play remains erratic. Made a couple of bad turnovers. Just seems to tight and ties himself in knots mentally and then his game ends up lacking any focus.

Joshua - not skating well - lot of reaching with his stick.

Forbert - playing some of the best hockey of his career. Turning into a needed positive.

I wonder if there has ever been another Canuck team that has ever been so dependent on one player?

Quinn is only 3 goals behind Debrusk right now.. imagine him finishing with most points goals and assists on the team, has that ever happened before?

Edit: for a defenceman
Was going to say before your edit:

Bro did this as a 22 year old

Tonight’s Game
  • Grinding away; managed the puck for the most part
  • Predators made a push but the Canucks held their ground
Karlsson, Hoglander, & Pettersson
  • Hoglander had some great jump tonight
  • Karlsson is good around the net
  • Nice to see that line producing
Demko
  • Is a world class goalie; have a tonne of confidence in him
Myers
  • Has been one of their steady guys; you know what you’re going to get from him every night
  • Never takes a practice off; very coachable
First Period
  • Was a better period with trying to attack
  • Need to do it for three periods; don’t want to back off
Key Faceoffs
  • Big faceoff win for Miller at the end of the game
  • Suter had a really good game; played intelligently
Blocking Out the Noise
  • Each player needs to bring their game
  • Rely on each other; positive people can overtime outside stuff

The shift chart from this game for Canucks' defenceman is very funny:

Hronek - 31 shifts (22:34)
Myers - 30 shifts (24:36)
Forbort - 26 shifts (19:49)
Hughes - 23 shifts (24:36)
Juulsen - 21 shifts (13:52)
Soucy - 20 shifts (12:58)

Hughes averaged over 1 minute per shift!

Maybe those Canuck teams with Luongo when he first arrived? Would consistently shut the door and steal us games

JT had a pretty tough game. Tons of offensive errors, gave the puck away multiple times leading to high danger chances for the Preds

If he’s gonna keep playing like this they need to trade him

This season is kinda like that guy riding the unicycle on the tight rope cross the Andes. They are going to stick the landing, but by all means they shouldn't. Musn't. Wouldn't. Couldn't! You kinda hope the f***ing guy would just fall already, there's no way...and he is on the last third and his legs are getting really wobbly...

...I can't remember how that ended. Hopefully well. Man. That was cool.

soucy needs to sit a few games. he been dreadfull. let the kid d-petey some games. younger fresher legs. yes i know there will be mistakes but it will be fixable and corrected. soucy not so much.
The implosion of Soucy's game this year has probably bee one of the more shocking developments with this team. What happened? Appears to be playing with 'zero' confidence and pace right now.

I know the plan was probably to send Elias Pettersson II back to Abbotsford. But until he actually plays his way out of the NHL, I'd be tempted to use him over Soucy right now.
