there were rumors that jake gardiner had a handshake agreement with a team that was waiting to put a player on long term injured reserve prior to this signing today. curious what that's about.

Why is Jake Gardiner still on the UFA market? - TheHockeyNews

Maybe that is still true...you could go conspiracy theory and say that the Canes are just a conduit to get Jake under contract and then he will be traded to team "X" once the season starts and LTIR kicks in--especially if said team needs to move out a contract to sign him. I'm going Gardiner for Kapanen...you heard it here first!

I know its not my board, but you guys got an absolute stud in Jake. Assuming he fully bounces back after the back issues, you can add another top-30 defenseman in the entire league to the three you already have, and he'd really be a perfect partner to either Dougie or Pesce.

People will say he's mistake-prone and poor defensively, but he ALWAYS grades out as one of the better defensive defenseman in the league and its because shots/chances just never go on his own net when he's on the ice. He's also arguably a top-10 offensive defenseman even taking the points out of the equation. The hiccups will come, some of us call them "misjakes", but people see them more because they're looking for them. He'll also do about 99 things right before that happens. Gotta live with it when you have a guy who can do what he does.

Can't wait to crush you guys in the conference finals, but I'm cheering for Jake if you guys make it past us.

I love the sound of this and it sounds similar to a reasonable criticism of Hamilton (lots of good plays, an occasional high-profile error like last year vs WAS.)

But for that reason, I'm not sure if Gardiner-Hamilton is what I want to see at even strength. Let Slavin & Pesce be ready to cover for the occasional brain cramp.

Maenalanen, McGinn, Suzuki, Mattheos, Rees, Bishops, Pritchard, Drury, Kuokkanen, Hofmann, Poturalski, Cotton, Roy, Saarela, Gauthier

McGinn will be in the NHL and Geekie won't. He's at least a full season away. And you missed a bunch of our Finnish forward prospects, who may be the best in the bunch: Puistola, Tieksola and Killinen.

Poturalski, Roy (for Haula) and Saarela (for Forsberg/Forsling) were traded or left via free agency this summer. Hofmann is a non-prospect and should be deleted.

Forsling, Van Riemsdyk, Fleury, Priskie, Sellgren, Carrick, De Jong, Sellgren

I heart Sellgren, but he should only be on the list once. van Riemsdyk and Fleury will be in the NHL and Bean won't. de Jong was unsigned and is a free agent.

But yes, a top 10 NHL roster, a top 10 pipeline and six top 100 picks next season is certainly a nice place to be.

We are a happy group right now.

Slavin Hamilton
Pesce Faulk
Gardiner Fleury/TVR

Gets 16+ min of easy comp plus #1 pp time + mild weather and lots of golf. He stole Calvins roots :*(

If Fleury could handle playing his off-side, trade van Riemsdyk.

Late in 3rd periods, Brind'Amour could flex to:

Slavin - Pesce
Fleury/Gardiner - Faulk
Gardiner/Fleury - Hamilton

when leading and:

Slavin - Hamilton
Gardiner - Faulk
Fleury - Pesce

when trailing.

Interesting about putting TVR on LTIR. Sounded like he'd be ready.

I like that lineup, although I think this is more likely:
Slavin-Hamilton
Gardiner-Pesce
Fleury-Faulk

Yes, Pesce looked great on the left. But that doesn't mean we should put Gardiner on the right sight unseen to let Pesce play on the left.

Then once a Faulk move is made, put TVR in next to Fleury. Or move Faulk.

The PK will now be:
Slavin-Hamilton (or Slavin-Faulk)
Fleury-Pesce?

I'm excited for the PP, but interested to see how Rod constructs the PK.

I’m just a dummy is all. Would’ve bet money Gardiner was RH shot.

I know everyone is assuming Faulk is the one moved shortly to make space, but to me, this seems to solidify Hamilton on the way out very soon as he has a higher cap hit than faulk, he has no trade protections, he plays less defense, and we brought in a guy who is considered more offensive oriented on the left hand side that can fill some of what we would lose. If true, that would give us a defensive line up of:

Slavin - Pesce
Gardiner - Faulk
(kid) - TvR

My bet is we circle back to the Jets and offer Hamilton+ for Ehlers or Laine. They need RHD and a lower cap hit. Hamilton gives them a good RHD for a good cap cost and they could move Ehlers to sign the two RFAs or they could keep Ehlers and move one of the RFAs.

I'm pretty well floored here...I kinda was wondering for a while if the whole "sign Gardiner, trade Faulk" scenario would happen and half of it has. Honestly, it's gotta be either Faulk or Hamilton out, otherwise you've got Slavin as the only real PK/defensive D-man in our top 4. Unless we really plan on rolling them all? There's definitely something the GMBC is doing here, an actual plan that they're trying to bring together, with regards to these "value" contracts. I mean, Nino, Haula, Dzingle, Gardiner, Aho contract, TT contract...what "bad" contracts are on this team? Somehow, with one of the deepest defensive cores in the NHL, we managed to convince a young guy like Priskie AND a bona-fide top 4 NHL d-man in Gardiner to join us (plus McKeown re-signed), and this is after we signed and traded a top 4 d-man in 1 year, and rumors of one of our long-time d-men (Faulk) possibly headed out the door. There has been a LOT of roster turnover, yet we're signing UFAs! And young prospects! And on-paper seem to be improving bit by bit! I think perhaps despite the threat of turnover, being traded away, and tough competition for a roster spot, we're being seen as a legit enough contender for players to risk it with us!

I keep seeing people knock Gardiner about his defensive mistakes on the ice. But when we have guys like Slavin and Pesce on the other side of the pairing, we have the luxury of putting guys out there who can drive offensive play, because those defensive lapses will mostly be covered up by the other half of the pairing. (Which, as an aside, frustrated me a bit about Faulk not really breaking out this year when paired with either of those 2).

Slavin-Hamilton
Pesce-Gardiner

I'd put that top 4 up against anyone else in the league. Two lines of shutdown defense paired with upper tier offensive ability. This defense is so stacked.

Marleau. I mean, it would take a 1st to get rid of that albatross of a contract.

Didn't Hamilton lead all NHL defensemen in goals or points over the second half of the season this past year?

Nah, we aren't trading him. If anyone is going to go, it has to be Faulk, if only because we have Hamilton locked up for another year, where Faulk is going to be looking for an upgrade next summer.
