Speculation: Canes needs to contend

Marner is the play for Carolina. Need help 5v5 and he moves the needle. Need a Puck moving dman as well per above. And a goalie. Make your targets and go get them. Otherwise, keep getting embarrassed in the playoffs. Change is needed. And any slow start. I'd get a new coach too.

I don't mind the value on the Demko deal. I think that's reasonably fair on a guy who may or may not be broken, so he's a gamble for anyone. I just don't really think another defence prospect/young player is what the Canucks need. I suppose it doesn't really matter, as they could just flip Morrow to someone else for what they actually need. And Carolina don't really have that to offer anyway. They're looking for the same sort of 2C and impact offensive forwards as Vancouver. So i guess...take what's there and a promising young defenceman isn't the worst thing to try to flip. But it does add extra steps and complication for Vancouver. And if Demko is actually healthy and stays that way, it actually feels a bit light on value for an impact goaltender on a great contract for the year...just diminished a bit because of the risk.

Sure he's not good in high pressure games, but in a market like Carolina he may thrive, without the media pressure.

He'd instantly become Carolina's best forward since E.Staal or even Francis.

You miss the point

He’s Carolina style player to a T, but what Canes need is a change

They need to bring in different style of players, not more of what they already got 20 of

They need to look at themselves the same way Tampa did before they won their Cup and Florida before they won their Cups

Where’s Kotkaniemi? 😂
I bought that man out for a $850K cap hit a year. His play isn’t my primary problem with him. It’s his inability to accept he needs to play better and I don’t believe he has a winning mentality to help us come playoff time. 😂😂😂😂

Edit: I’m sure we could make a trade but I didn’t have the time for this rough draft to think that much harder haha

Blake yea Stank no way. He is a gamer and exactly a piece we need to contend.

I thought Blake was fabulous this year and looked like he had the “Jarvis It Factor”. If he was on the table I’d be salivating to grab him if in the other team. Stankoven was higher impact in the Florida series games I saw but I think they are both gems. Nadeau is different as more of a pure offensive dynamo and his AHL season was remarkable for his age.

You gotta give to get though, unless you can do your big fishing in free agency.

Unfortunately they are at contend mode when Florida rules the East. They need to make a couple massive moves this offseason and hope that does it. They need a Marner type all star stud forward do damn bad

I’ve always enjoyed watching the Canes, but come playoff time, other teams just step up more than they do

This was always his problem, even in MTL. People just didn’t want to hear it. His entitlement and complete refusal to work on his weak areas are fatal flaws. Now he’s older and the hope that he’ll ever get his shit together is gone. Galchenyuk had the same flaws, except Kotkaniemi isn’t nearly as skilled, so I really don’t understand where KK’s hubris comes from; it’s honestly baffling. I wouldn’t be surprised if KK ends up back overseas when this contract is up.

I agree with you there. I also believe Blake could be a Jarvis type player sooner rather than later. I’d personally rather not trade either.

If we give up one I would personally rather trade Blake than Stank. Stank just brings a different element to the canes that I think we need more.

Ideally I’d rather not move on from any key players and make our moves free agency with the 30million we have to work with.

Now I see what Montreal fans saw. I defended him previously but his end of season interview did it for me. He not once mentioned the team and what he needs to do to help the TEAM win. He ended the interview with he was a 1st round draft pick so obviously he is skilled. What a joke.

Coincidentally (or not so much), the sense of entitlement comes from his father’s meddling early in his career, just as was the case with Galchenyuk. Can’t believe how similar they ended up being, and the abuse I took from my fellow Habs fans for seeing the writing on the wall early with both of them.

The cap space is illusory to a real extent.

We have a lot of space this year and few holes, but looking a year out...we have big contracts due, no major money coming off the books, and potentially the best FA class in years.

Diving deep into FA this off-season is potentially a trap. I think the best play if we're spending to the cap is to work out some of pending RFA extensions and use trades to acquire our needs on expiring contracts.

Was moving off Rantanen so quickly not a tacit admission of “we took a swing but it’s not working out so we are going to recalibrate and not rush this?” The Canes still made the final four and while not getting over the hump has to be maddening - I’m not sure what could have been realistically expected better than that this season.

This still looks like a franchise trying to slowly build up for another big swing, but does that big swing have to be this summer? The core is still not that “old”, the deadwood is leaving and the roster and system are pretty flush with guys who are either making an impact now or will in the near future.

Does 25-26 have to be seen as a “make or break” year to be bold? Would simply taking one more year to turn the roster over to the younger guys be seen as a “wasted year” by a frustrated fan base?

You can't keep saying "oh the core is young" because that's when you need to take chances. The fanbase spends money on their team, they should get a competitor. Why keep kicking it down the road? Injuries can happen too

It’s not just the fanbase that wants to improve up front. Think about the names they’ve acquired or been linked to over the past few years:

Eichel
Tkachuk
Meier
Pettersson
Guentzel
Rantanen
Marner

Friedman has said that Dundon wants a star as recently as the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. Averaging 2 goals or less in a series, 5 of the 7 eliminations with 2020 barely north, has gotten old.

He'll absolutely get more than 6.8M, the question should be how much more than 8M will he get on the open market. There will be teams like Anaheim, San Jose, Chicago, etc that will loosen the purse strings this summer to add a player like that.
Chicago will not be in the Aaron Ekblad market

More than fair. Still boggles my mind the Rantanen thing went south so quickly. Good recoup of assets but I thought it seemed like “finally, the right match for what Carolina needs” when the trade went down.

It's great that they are involved with big names but at some point, you need to figure it out. Rantanen was whatever but Guentzel fit there perfectly and they let him walk. They always seem to be involved but they never actually pull the trigger and make tough moves.
