With close to 30 million in cap space this offseason and only needing to fill 2-3 spots what needs push the Canes to the next level?

I personally think we need a Bennett and Ekblad to fill out our roster. Marner doesn’t move the needle {in the playoffs IMO}. It became obvious after the Florida series that we need skilled physicality to compete in the last couple rounds.

Will this also finally be the year the Canes bring in a goaltender via trade or free agency? Free agency is slim pickings so a package deal may be needed to get a franchise goalie finally.

This is a quick off season roster I made. Bought out KK, traded Morrow and Pyotr for Demko. Maybe a 2nd round pick is also needed. What other goalies would be available with a package deal and what would it take?

I’m no GM just a fan since 96 that believes this is what is required to win the cup and get over the hump.

For Ehlers, the most goals scored in a season is 29. Most points in a season is 64. He has nine goals in 45 postseason games.

Am I the only one who thinks he's not the guy to overpay in Free agency?

As for this thread, they need more puck moving D, and # 2 C, a winger, and a legit #1 goalie.

To me Marner seems like a great fit. A true top line winger, would make them go a long way.

They have 28M in cap space - Get Marner, a defensive RHD, and a good 3c, and they'll be looking really good.

Someone made a good point why they shouldn’t go for Marner

He’s a perfect fit for Carolina

And what Carolina needs? A change

Dundon has been pretty adamant about getting a superstar for the Canes. I could see them really pursing EP40 this summer if the Nucks continue to implode. Ekblad also makes a lot of sense as a landing spot but 10M is probably too much. Ekblad was fantastic when he played with Weegar a few seasons ago, partnering with Slavin would likely bring out that offense and maybe even more. I could also see them going after Erik Karlsson too.

Sure he's not good in high pressure games, but in a market like Carolina he may thrive, without the media pressure.

He'd instantly become Carolina's best forward since E.Staal or even Francis.

Agreed on the Ekblad. I changed that to 6.8 million but posted the wrong roster haha

Carolina 100% needs gamebreakers on offense, whether that's a top offensive forward like Marner or a top offensive defenseman like Karlsson. They keep losing in the playoffs because they can't score at 5v5. They need to relax a bit on Rod's "everyone needs to be a great 2-way player" idea and bring in some actual high end offensive talent.

Thing is though, Marner is a pretty damned good 2-way player. I think he'd fit RBA's system well while providing that high-end offensive talent that Carolina needs.

That said -- I'm 100% fine if Marner goes out West. Hell, I'm hoping for it.

Trade for Demko and signing Bennett would be huge for them. Not sure if demko is completely broken at this point though

Am I the only one who thinks the guy they should pursue is Evan Bouchard?

I might be crazy, admittedly, but even if EDM wins the Cup with him, they'll need to think long and hard about whether to commit to him long term at 9-10M AAV+, or deal him for a solid return and pursue a PMD who plays a simpler game that would still play to McDrai's strengths...

For CAR, Bouchard's defensive deficiencies could be balanced out by pairing him with Slavin, no? Same idea as getting Burns to pair with him, but doing it for a top OFD in his prime instead. Then you end up with a superb PMD and point shot on the PP. Then worry about acquiring a legit 2C, and you're at least much, much better than the current team...

He'll absolutely get more than 6.8M, the question should be how much more than 8M will he get on the open market. There will be teams like Anaheim, San Jose, Chicago, etc that will loosen the purse strings this summer to add a player like that.

If the Oilers win the Cup, Bouchard will tell the Oilers what they must pay him, and they will give it to him. They will let him print the money. To think anything else might happen, is crazy. That's not how things work.

The prior runs at Pettersson were centered on a top line type player in return (Necas). In other words, a hockey trade.

Carolina doesn’t have that anymore. It’s grab bag time: Blake, Stankoven, Morrow, Nadeau, future late 1sts. I don’t see it for Vancouver. There’s a hockey argument for nuking it, but they aren’t going to want to.
