Seth Jarvis is really turning into a goddamn hero. He has that Chad LaRose-like quality of persistence and selling out to make a play, and he’s actually good enough to do it with skill and precision.

I really thought when he came into the league that he was going to be more of a waterbug, scoring-focused kind of player. But he’s about as gritty as they come in his own way, and he makes that energy and determination count for something. It’s fun watching him mature into a model of player that’s really hard to find outside of guys who lack the skill component.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite players on a team that I like a lot of our players a lot.

Noesen has 12 GWGs, not bad for a bottom 6er.

edit: this is career not this year

Looking at his career stats, he has consistently had a really high ratio of GWG no matter where he has played.

- NJD in 2018, he scored 13 goals and 4 were GWG
- PIT in 2020, he scored 6 goals and 2 were GWG
- CAR in 2023, he scored 13 goals and 4 were GWG
- CAR in 2024, he has 13 goals and 2 are GWG

Not really sure how much to make of that, but the numbers are interesting.

2nd line center Jack Drury which is not an issue in the slightest.

Watching that first goal again, Pesce didn't turn it over. The puck was going around the boards and Pesce went to play it along the boards where he expected the puck to go, like every defensemen in the NHL would do, when it hit something and bounced unexpectedly out toward the net.

Drury then tried to clear and flubbed it, which was an issue in the slightest.

Sometimes shit like that happens.

With Jarvis, I see a young Marchand sans the nonsense. Diminutive size, but looks bigger because of compete. To be trusted to play every game situation, now including shutdown minutes with Staal, at his age says a lot about him.
Jarvis needs to be signed for 8. Promised wife I'd buy her the "Jarvie Jersey" she's been caterwauling about when we sign him this summer. Jarvis is more of a 4chan troll and Marchand is just.... Well he's a very boston kind of troll.

I've said multiple times he's the most improved cane this year by a long shot, followed by chatty.

Jarvis is a must lock up. I really really want to see us sign Skjei and move on from Pesh. I wish we'd dangle him at the TDL for something good but we won't. His decline has been just bad while skjei is just almost as solid as Slavin.

We'd be insane to let Skjei go, and yes, I'd sign him for six.

chatfield looked great last night, think he gets underrated by a lot of us. he has a great understanding for when and where to pinch to sustain possessions in the offensive zone. it's like our system was tailor made for his playstyle

I admit that I was wrong on him last year. Maybe it was because early on, he was trying to do too much and looked a bit chaotic. That was my impression of him back then, good skater and full of energy, but chaotic.

He's settled in nicely though and I agree, his awareness has impressed me.

He seems like the poster child for “buys what the coaching staff is selling” from a system perspective. I love watch him pinch because there’s no hesitation, he makes a split second read and then fully commits to going and winning the puck (crucially, even if it ends up being the “wrong” read he rarely gets caught because of how aggressively he attacks once he’s decided that’s the play).

Gotta extend him to something fair. Something starting with a $2.

I'd be fine going above that. Even in the 3s I think he's fine if he has to fill in on the top 4 due to injury and can steady the bottom pairing with someone like Orlov, which bodes well when there's a kid they want to bring along on the third pairing in the future.

We are going to have a hard time affording anything above elc / league minimum for a 3rd pairing defender next year unless we get a super cheap 2RD or top 6 winger
The problem is that's simply the market for UFA D.

Ian Cole is regularly signing $3M deals. Edmundson got $3.5M for 4 years. Were these guys significantly better than Chatfield?

Hakanpaa was cheaper, but he was also far less mobile than Chatfield.

If they are going to go cheap on the 3rd pairing defender next year, I think it's more likely we see TDA back than Chatfield. Unless they decide to replace Pesce with Chatfield.

Chatfield looks good on the third pairing but so has TDA of late. Chatfield is still highly sheltered night in and night out. replacing Pesce with chatty means the defense will take a step backwards next season. Pesce gets a lot of crap but he by far takes on the hardest duties on the team for a defender. Even more than Slavin although its a small gap between the two. Not that I think we should keep pesce.
