Canes/Devils Rivalry?

I went there once.. my uncle lives down there...I was 17...got drunk and acted like a complete idiot. It was 2007 the year after they won the cup. I wore a blank red Devils jersey and some Canes fans came up to me and said " who are you ? gonna replace elias tonight ? " Patty was hurt and I believe it was one of Clarksons first games...or Rassmussen...I'm not sure...I was very drunk.

So we won the game...and I was getting chirped by some rednecks...so...in my drunken state...I start running around the concourse chanting " THREE CUPS! * clap clap * THREE CUPS " I thought I was hilarious...looking back I probably would of kicked my own ass.

wow, well hopefully we don't hear much of that either, speaking of which i am planning on taking a trip down there during the 2 Florida back to backs, i believe i will be an hour south of tampa, how is the trip to either from there/ tickets prices.

not to get too off topic just wanted to ask you quick.

Ticket prices are usually very cheap in Sunrise where the Panthers play. You can sit on one of the 3 sections along the ice for like $80-90 bucks I think. The club seats at Prudential Center that are $250 a game, you can sit at the arena in Sunrise for under $100. You don't get the unlimited food or anything like at the Rock, but it's very worth it. Unless the prices went up a lot this year, but I don't think they did. Your ticket includes parking there too. They have a nice big lot right on arena grounds, and your parking is included in your ticket(Unless it's changed this year, but it has been the last 2 years since I been going there) It's in a nice secluded spot too.

In Tampa the tickets are a bit more expensive. Not quite as high as a Devils game, but significantly higher. You have to pay for your parking too. The arena is kinda in the city in like a marina district. No big parking lot there. They just have lots spread out around the area.


I'm 45 minutes west of the TB Times Forum. It takes me about 4 hours to get to the Bank Atlantic in Sunrise, or whatever they're calling that arena now. BB&T Center or something. If you're an hour south of Tampa, it will probably take you 3 hours to get to Sunrise. Get on I-75 southbound straight to Sunrise. It will turn into the Alligator Alley as you head south (It's technically heading east by that time) The arena is only a couple minutes off I-75.

They arent rivals and just because they have none Im not going to look at the times they beat us in gut-wrenching fashion and say, "Golly gee theyre our rivals now" just for the sake of Canes fans.

Plus, Ive never been to Raleigh.

Are the teams we have to fight for the hearts and minds of New Jerseyans. The Rags and Failyers.

The Islanders are not our rivals. The Penguins are not our rivals. The Hurricanes are not our rivals. The Capitals aren't, either. They're competitors. We don't like them. But there's no passion.

I hate the Islanders too. I really hope we show up to play them this year. That's been a constant problem for the Devils to come to play against them. When we did last year, they couldn't handle our forecheck. We could keep them pinned in for a minute at a time.

They eliminated us in the playoffs a few times, so I can see disliking them more than average, but that kind of passion, I know no reason for it.

I hate the Islanders too.

In general, though, there seems to be a mutual respect between the fanbases. I've gone to NJ/NYI games at the Mausoleum, the Rock, and Izod (Barclays in a few weeks) and their fans have always been more-or-less polite to me and my friends. Then again, we have a lot of the same chants, and there are a lot of Islanders and Devils fans who hate the Rangers more passionately than they love their own team. So there's that.

I don't hate the Hurricanes like I hate the Rangers or Flyers, of course, but they're not that far behind. Unlike those two teams, they have a history of beating us when it counts.

I just don't like the arrogance among some Isles fans since they made the playoffs. I see it all around lately. A lot of them act like the team is so great because they made the playoffs one time in 7 years. In a season that was 48 games no less. They looked to be running out of gas in the last week or two of the season. I think if we had 82 last year, they miss the playoffs. Us or the Flyers get that spot. Possibly both us and the Flyers get it if the Laffs collapse.

The Panthers chant at every goal is actually cool IMO. The PA announcer yells PANTHERS and the crowd yells GOAL. Its better than 'hey you suck'.

I think their PA announcer is extremely annoying. Just everything he says throughout the whole game. He sounds like someone you'd hear on an amusement park ride. He's still not anywhere near as bad as their bushleague announce duo.

It's the same person who put Toronto, Detroit, Ottawa, and Montreal, in the ATLANTIC division.

The only non Florida team close to the Atlantic in that division is Boston.

Tell me about it. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Them and the Laffs are probably not in the playoffs in an 82 game season last year.

Now I'm seeing all kinds of ridiculous things. There's a thread on their board from some article about Garth Snow being the most underrated GM in the league now. Seriously?

Haven't most of their fans been unhappy with Garth the whole time he's been there? Now they make the playoffs and he's a good GM? Really?

I can get behind that idea as a Canes fan. I think at one point there was but not anymore. In the 2001 playoffs when Stevens hit Francis and Willis, new fans didn't understand that this was part of what playoff hockey entailed. The atmosphere was raucous. I have never at any other time in my life at any other hockey game thought that there was a danger that the crowd was going to storm the ice and enact some kind of vigilante justice. It was that intense inside the building, because a lot of the people in it had never witnessed this kind of game. It was pure hatred in that building.

From that point, many Hurricanes fans considered the Devils the NHL's big bully. The Stanley Cup winners "too good" for lowly Carolina to take them to 6 games. Almost like it was a joke they even had to play in our building. That winning was a formality. I think i'm getting my point across that the inferiority complex that was borne of this developed into some pretty intense feelings. In 2002, most people still feel like the biggest series for us was the win against the Devils because of what it symbolized. Sort of an "arrival" in a way. The fact that we could compete with the best and win in an underdog capacity.... it was a good feeling. Validation. The fact that we ended up in the SCF that year only adds to the lore.

I won't rehash 2006 and 2009 here, as it would be borderline trolling, but I think those experiences kind of helped Carolina fans leave that rivalry behind. I think you'll find a more concentrated hatred of Buffalo among the fanbase.

The one thing that makes for good rivalries is time and stakes. When you're growing up and your parents banter on about how much they hate the Flyers and Rangers and you're the "little brother" over there in Jersey and its been that way your whole life... it's a little easier for you guys to see that as a rivalry. It's as old as time. Carolina fans really have none of those rivalries, either geographically or historically. The closest we get is that we've faced the Devils more times than virtually any other team in the playoffs in our short history. That has to mean something to us. But the vitriol has understandably subsided with recent events being what they've been.

And in my experience most of the Devil fans that come down have been mostly respectful of the game and know when a line is being crossed. That can't be said for Buffalo fans. Those guys don't travel well at all. 90% of why we hate them was stuff that didn't even happen on the ice.

Great summary from Vagrant.

From the reverse fanbase perspective, I don't think of it as a full blown rivalry on par with our locals. But those playoff series losses have really stung. Add to that the former Devils in the coaching staff. There is clearly a little extra there. And the games seem a little chippier.

Will be interesting if that ramps up further as division opponents. Could continue to develop, deepen.

My level of unlike for Eric Staal is one of the highest amongst all of the people in the world.

I consider them our 2nd biggest rival after the NYR. Personally I think the PHI rivalry is quite overblown, but then again I don't live in Jersey.

That rivalry is very legit. Flyers and Devils fans are constantly at each others throats.

I think the Isles were plenty good enough to make the playoffs. Too much talent to call it a fluke IMO.

I agree. I think the Panthers goal chant is cool. Hey you suck is absolutely terrible. Our team just scored. So let's serenade them with hey you suck. Yes I know we aren't aiming it at the Devils, but it just sounds awful. We need to get rid of Rock N' Roll part two completely.

Very true about the Devils chant. I never really understood it. It seems like more of a celebration of the hatred of the opposition more than an uplifting of the team itself. "You suck" cheers during play? All for 'em. But when my team scores, I want to lose my mind for OUR boys. Not lose it for their guys. With that said, glass houses and such, our goal horn is as hokey and awful as any you'll find but it's been in place so long that I can't .... not hear it? If that makes any sense.
