looking at the numbers:

We had a better CF in 5v5, 54%
We had a goals advantage of 17-10. We had an expected goals advantage too by 1.11. We outperformed our xGF by 4.5 and out performed our xGA by 1.35 (or 1 Meier blown open net).
Thay had us in HD Chances by 4, 56-60. We had them in HD goals 10-8.
We out scored them by 1 on our PP, 2-1. We underperformed by 1 goal for and against.
On the PK we had a 29% CF, which is actually really good. We tied them in goals at 2 a piece, we had a 1 goal advantage if you count the PS as a SHG. Our PK performed as expected and we outscore our expected goals by 1. They only had a 8 shot advantage when on the PP.

Skjei, Pesce and Aho were our only players with a CF% of under 50

Burns and Slavin had a 90% GF% on 5v5. We had 6 other players with a 75% or higher.
Ghost and Pesce were 40% GF. Stepan, Stas and Puljujarvi were not on the ice for any GFs and on the ice for GA.
Burns, Slavin, Ghost, KK and Martinook were our highest xGF on the ice in 5v5, in order. Ranging from 5.42 to 4.03
For ixG our top 5 were Martinook, Jarvis, Fast, Aho and Staal.

Congrats Canes and fans. The better team won for sure. I'm heartbroken of course, but I have nothing but respect for the way team is coached and how they played. Good luck the rest of the way. See you next year. We'll be back.
You guys are going to be tough to handle. Glad to be part of this rivalry. Seems like old times.

I assume that was English, and means the Canes kicked ass...

For the most part
@PredsV82 my degree is recreational therapy, btw. Im in cybers / information security now. Totally relatable

add a poll for FL or Toronto so I don't have to make another thread. I'll make the series talk thread when we know who we're playing

Devils have nothing to be ashamed of or disappointed about, incredible season for you guys to kickoff this new era with your sweet young core. I think we'll be meeting in the playoffs quite a few times the next 5-10 years. One thing we can agree on is both these teams are better than the Rags and have a more legit window than them.

I think we'll play Florida obviously because of where that series stands and because I think they're better than Toronto right now.

If so, it's a tough matchup. Right now, Florida does some things similar to us with possibly even more toughness and skill.

However, we've been doing it longer and better. If we don't get sucked into the rough stuff they'll try I think we prevail as we did against the Islanders toughness. As good as Bob has been, we can do enough against him and that defense. While Florida does a lot similar to us it feels, I think they are more susceptible to the counterpunch than even we are.

Continue to get good goaltending, timely special teams, stay disciplined, forecheck the hell out of them, and we can take it.

Now, all that said, Toronto will come back somehow.

Naaaah.

I want to play Florida because their defense is very poor and bob will return to his averages. Bob has prevented 3 xGs via 5v5, in which Toronto has a higher xGF in 5v5.

They allowed 11 PPs goals against Boston and 2 vs against Toronto.

They scored 5 PPGs against Boston and 2 against Toronto. They did allow 2 SHGs against Boston.

Outside of Gudas isn’t overly physical. Jarvis, Aho, and Necas should have a better time against that group.

Freddie will take abuse as Tkachuk will freely run into him.

I dunno. Florida seems like a tough matchup. Tkachuk can make a major impact, even if he doesn't score (and we'll have trouble enough with preventing that), and while we can hope Bob falls off, that's certainly not a guarantee either.

Meanwhile, Florida handled Boston and Toronto, two teams that were better or about equal to us in the regular season.

Add in that Maurice knows our players and coach better than any other coach in the league, and it could be trouble.

I think the addition of Burns has been the difference this year.

It's a very 06-07 anaheim ducks feel. With Pronger/Niedermayer/Beauchemin
In fairness, in 20-21 the dougie and slavin pair had 80% GF through 8 games with a 51% O zone FO%

Slavin and Burns are at 81.25% through 11 games with a 46.25% O zone FO%.

I would say the 20-21 team had a harder time. Nashville and Islanders are fairly comparable but TB was better than NJ.

Big difference over TDA. The Slavs-TDA pair had s 56% GF% with a 55.3% O zone FO%. Granted last year’s team had the worst matchups. Boston and Rangers were worse than both our opponents this season and comparable to TB.

The expected goals stuff is interesting. I would have thought it would be more in favor of the Canes. When I glanced at moneypuck's model for our blowout wins, I think they undercounted our chances. There were lots of instances of New Jersey just not playing the body at all and giving us tons of room. The eye test of watching the game tells the more complete picture.

I'm glad we had a game 5. Meaning, I think it was important for the players to not be in another blowout, but to play a tightly-contested game to close it out. It was just about evenly matched, but I think the Canes looked better as the game went on, particularly at the 50:00 mark and past. Says a lot against the younger Devils players.

Our style of forechecking, puck retrieval, pinches, and racing back to prevent neutral zones has to mean that we skate a longer physical distance on the ice than most teams. Especially our defense. They're relied on to move a lot. The rest here again is huge. At the end of game 5, both teams looked pretty gassed. I can't imagine how much energy those skaters output. Both teams were pouring their hearts out.

Coin toss. The Cats' physicality and questionable hits, plus the momentum of two upsets scares me. But I would also fear the version of the Leafs team that broke the curse in round 1 and then came back from down 0-3 in Round 2.

I lean slightly towards Leafs just for hiliarity purposes.

But either way, hope the boys are resting up. They'll need it!

Congratulations! The better team won. Rod the Bod had a plan and his boys executed to perfection.

I would say the Devils are right where the Avs were 2-3 years ago and where you guys were last year.

To be continued...

Thanks. You have such a nice fanbase by the way lol. It's like, shocking compared to a lot of others.

Does he, though? I mean, he knows Brindy, but Brindy isn't playing. He knows Jordan. Who else was around during his previous tenure? No one, I don't think. It's been more than a decade.

EDIT: he doesn't know Jordan either. Jordan joined the Canes in 2012; Mo last coached here in 2011.

You’re too kind. If you met me on here or at a game when I was maybe 21 or 22, you’d have a totally different take.

We can still be just as nasty (because of the chip on our shoulder from sheer passion for the Devils and representing New Jersey in a New York and Philly-dominated reality), perhaps some of those with HF accounts for a long time grew up a bit and were humbled by the decade in the wilderness. We’re still from New Jersey, after all, and “we don’t like you either.”
