I'm damn glad we have RBA as a Coach but like all humans he does have his faults, one of which is arguably blind loyalty. That applies to his vets + staff. At this point I think Brindy has his heels dug in out of spite when it comes to deflecting criticism of the PP.
Its been obvious for a while now, beyond just this run of games and even this season, that there are serious flaws to our PP system. Its been one of the biggest reasons for our flame outs in the playoffs during our run, and absolutely nothing has been done to address it. I genuinely don't think anything will be done under Brindy's tenure unless his hands are completely forced by Dundon in a 'either you change it or you're fired' kind of way ultimatum.
As commented several weeks ago, there were coaches available in the off season that are PP specialists (ie Winnipeg's hire) that would certainly have improved the performance. Beyond coaching......
Ghost is the only in-zone crafty defensemen we have that also knows how to pass properly to a players stick (as against Burns who is awful). But he doesn't have a rocket shot and is also not very fast and poses a risk if he goes deep into the zone. Teams have studied film and know how to compensate for him too.
Then there is the one-timer requirement (two players are ideal....we have Mikko and now need another) and that no one else on the squad has emerged as that specialist (that needed to be Svetch but his shot has not really improved). Nadeau appears to be the NHL PP shot ready guy in the system (post Necas, better than any Cane on big squad too) but Management appears to believe that he is not ready for NHL play in other facets of the game.
Now, given the unbelievably poor results over the last 2 months, it mind boggling that they have not made any changes.
I haven't watched Morrow enough this year to know whether he could be the new PP specialist but until they address the defenseman or one-timer issues, I suspect the results will continue to be very poor (btw: I don't see Nikishin as our PP specialist). Another reason why this year will not have a long playoff run (even Gold acknowledged last night that getting one playoff win is optimistic given the current squad).
