GDT: Canes Burnsed by Flames?

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
It’s striking how every single puck touch is bobbled.

The Canes offense (and especially their PP) depends on a lot of really simple, short passes which need to be made quickly and cleanly. We do very little in the way of dancing around and creating space. The space is created by moving the puck systematically, faster than the D can adjust.

Watching them right now, even the simplest little passes are off-target and even when they’re dead on, they aren’t received cleanly. We’re really seeing the talent difference between this group and previous editions of the team.

(Finally a goal while I was writing all that)
We saw it against Buffalo, we saw it in the month of October. When this team is playing at the idealized version of Rod’s system, it’s a night and day difference. The forecheck is creating consistent pressure and hemming the other team in their own zone, passes are crisp and precise and are on the tape and very quickly being sent off to the tape of another.

You can understand why Rod gets bewildered when they can’t put it together consistently, it would be different if the team had lost the juice top to bottom from day one of the season onwards.

Couple thoughts:

I don't see selling off assets as a realistic option for the organization. Some of our more astute fans might see the strategy and approve, but telling the fan base in general that you're giving up on the season would be a p.r. catastrophe.

I'll be gobsmacked (been waiting for a chance to use that word lol) if anyone on the team is going to half-ass it in the playoffs. Might be nice to see the Canes bump it up a notch or two in the playoffs instead of just experiencing it from the opponents. Get there and see what happens.

I'd love to see Rod mix up the D pairings. Having said that, I can't see selling off anyone unless it's to upgrade the D for now and in the future.

I have a couple thoughts also.

Selling and giving up on the season is a f***ing stupid thought.

Sometimes it really is bewildering to see really basic, unpressured passes go wrong. I can’t imagine the feelings I’d have as the coach when that happens.

It was definitely one he wants back, but considering his performance in the 2nd, hardly the issue here. Can't expect a goalie to pitch a shutout to win the game
Nope don’t agree. 1-0 late in the game he needs to stop that.

But like I said that’s his profile.

NHL edge stats are good for high danger but he ranks around the bottom for low and mid danger shots and thus the usual soft goals.

Rantanen please show us how you scored 55 goals in a season

Jarvis has brought some life to that line, but dear lord, someone needs to finish these chances.

Goalies want any goal back, but any goalie is going to give that one up occasionally. When they pick the far corner, they pick the far corner, and you position to provide much better coverage on the near corner than the far corner, because the near corner is the much easier one to hit. And Kochetkov isn't a walrus type goalie who can just cover the entire net when he comes out a little bit.

Score goals. Score goals. Score goals. We are not a team built to win 1-0.
